    I live in Hawaii and I see those Gold Dust Day geckos a lot in my backyard. Really beautiful lizards with such a cute face.

    I don't wanna be all negative, but many people here say they also wanna get some, so I'd like to give some advice.
    1. The vivarium should ideally be taller than wide. These geckos spend pretty much all their time above ground. They need little groundspace, but a lot of space to climb.
    2. Even if it were 2 females and a male, it is not advisable to keep more than one pair of these geckos. Female gold dust day geckos establish a hierarchy, and if the less dominant female can't escape since it's trapped in a vivarium, it might get seriously injured. You can be lucky, but it is unlikely.
    If your geckos are happy under other conditions, that's great. However, to ensure the well-being of your pets, I'd recommend you consider these points, especially the second one.

    I have these as pests in my house... I catch them and put them outside if they look thin. Otherwise I just clean up their poop and let them be pest control. I fine eggs in the most random places, like behind hanging pictures...lol.

    I used to have a house on the Big Island of Hawaii. I had many Gold Dust Day Geckos all around my house. They were extremely aggressive towards other lizards and would exclude Green and Brown Anoles from the plants directly around my house. I didn't see them much out in the yard, but mostly right around my front porch. They would eat skinks, and right at dusk they would attack the nocturnal gecko species. The Day Geckos ripped the night geckos out of their hiding spots and ate them all the time. I would fill a small bottle cap with sugar water for the honey bees, but the dominant male day gecko would block everyone else, until he had his fill.

    Also what substrate do you use for the live plants? I'm curious because I'm about to purchase everything for the Goldie.

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 років тому +2

      A bioactive substrate mix works best - joshsfrogs.com makes a good one. Otherwise, organic potting mix or coconut coir can work just fine. Be sure to add a drainage layer at the very bottom so the soil isn't too saturated.

    I want to cohab these geckos safely. How did they do together? Some keepers say they will kill each other and some say they cohab well.

  • @adriannavarrete8529

    I know they say not to put different species in the same tank but was wondering if it's possible for a lined day gecko and gold dust to be in a 18x18x24?

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 років тому

      In some cases I would say it's fine to cohab day gecko species, but gold dusts can be pretty territorial. I'd ask some experts on a day gecko Facebook group or forum... If you do so, just remember that it's at the risk of fights/possible deaths

  • @theonlyryan_9180
    @theonlyryan_9180 7 років тому

    Would you recommend a 5.0 and 2.0 together for Exo terra for the Gold Dust Day Geckos l. 5.0 has 3-5 % UV which is fairly high, along with 2.0 that only sustains 1-2 % max. I need a heat source but they don't need a UTH. And they seem to only bask really after eating or sometimes night.

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 років тому

      Mine don't really bask, but I think that combo sounds just fine!

    Are the plants alive?And if so , how do you water them?

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  8 років тому

      Yes, all of the plants are alive. It's a planted vivarium, so the point is to make a miniature environment for the geckos. I dump about a liter of water into the soil every couple weeks, and mist the entire tank once or twice a day.

  • @kristof8714

    Could i put one of these in a 12x12x18?

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  8 років тому

      I think you could fit a pair in a 12x12x18 - one should do fine. I ended up with two males and one female, so the lone male's been in a 2 gallon carrier and seems to be doing fine!

    can you house different types of day geckos in the same cage if they are almost the same in size

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  8 років тому

      Don't believe that would be a great idea. Males of the same species will kill each other if housed together, so I don't think a communal setup would work well. That said, I've seen different phelsuma species housed together at zoos.

    • @AfroHerpkeeper

    Do they uvb and heat

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  8 років тому

      They can survive without UVB, but it's really not best for them. Temp should stay between 75 and 90, so long as they can thermoregulate.

      by how much?

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  8 років тому

      Maybe an inch at most. The biggest difference between males and females is the presence of femoral pores under the base of the males' tails. They're big pores in a V formation, and they secrete a yellow waxy substance

    i have 2 females giant day geckos is it normal that they lay eggs with no male

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 років тому

      Are you sure one isn't a male? Virgin births ARE possible in many reptile species, but they're very uncommon for most. I've never heard of that phenomenon in day geckos so if that's actually the case I'd join a forum or Facebook group about phelsumids.

    could a gold dust day gecko be housed with a crested gecko? Just wondering.

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  8 років тому +5

      Not in the same enclosure. They have similar requirements, but the crestie would most likely eat the day gecko.

    • @raging_crocodile2081
      @raging_crocodile2081 8 років тому +1

      Ok, I was just cearious.

    • @dogsarebetter
      @dogsarebetter 7 років тому

      Plus, day geckos are diurnal and cresties are crepuscular. This means different UVB requirements

    • @raging_crocodile2081
      @raging_crocodile2081 7 років тому

      I didnt think day geckos needed uvb as long as they get plenty of D3 in their diet

    • @dogsarebetter
      @dogsarebetter 7 років тому

      Theoretically yes, but most people report brighter coloring with UVB. There's no good reason to deprive a completely diurnal reptile of UVB.

      AfroHerpkeeper Thank you! I think I will go with leopard gecko. I was thinking the name Delta as a unisex name. Any other suggestions? Im pretty new to reptiles and I heard leopards are good for beginners. Do you agree? You earned a new sub 😂. Do you have any leopards? If so can you make vids

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 років тому

      Absolutely, one of the best animals to start out with. Just do your research and provide the right food, water, setup, heat, and humidity, and they'll thrive under anybody's care.

    • @sakuragacha6227
      @sakuragacha6227 7 років тому

      AfroHerpkeeper If you have leopard geckos, can you please make a vid of some info if you haven't already. My sister is only 9. What do you recommend for her?

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 років тому

      I don't have any leos, but I can send some good care guides your way. They make a great first pet, but you or a parent will probably want to oversee the care just to make sure the gecko is getting everything it needs to stay healthy. Here's a very good basic care guide: www.reptilesmagazine.com/Care-Sheets/Lizards/Leopard-Gecko/

    poor geckos there trapped they would love to be in Madagascar instead

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  7 років тому +2

      They have constant access to fresh water and food, and have no predators to worry about - with all their resources readily available to them, they really have no need for a larger territory. The wilds of Madagascar are pretty unforgiving by comparison, between predation, random weather events, and extreme habitat loss

    If I housed a male and a female together, how quickly will they breed and how often will they create viable offspring? I would like to house a pair but don't want millions upon millions of baby geckos, if you know what I mean

    • @AfroHerpkeeper
      @AfroHerpkeeper  8 років тому

      They're reliable breeders - if I remember right they can surpass five clutches a year if kept under ideal breeding conditions. An all-female colony would avoid the issue entirely, but (as bad as it sounds) if you found brand new eggs they could be stuck in the freezer. I wouldn't personally freeze older eggs but I know some keepers will. If you let babies hatch out into the enclosure with the adults, they'll most likely get eaten.
