Escapes happen. It's something nearly every herp keeper has experienced at one time or another. It's an unfortunate incident but it's a teachable moment for yourself and your followers. I'm sorry for your losses. It is always tough. Your honest and frank approach is appreciated. A lot of people try to sugar coat or spin things in their favor. Definitely subscribing.
I think you're human just like the rest of us. many might not remember that but I appreciate your honesty. You don't have to share everything with us but I appreciate it because it helps me with my path in this thing we're doing it's not always easy that's for darn sure. Keep up the incredible work Daniel.
Don't blame yourself man it happens and respect the honesty . If it wasn't the tegu it would have been a cat or a uneducated homeowner that ended the hog nose . Great work as always glad to see a vid and hear all the other critters are doing well . Best of luck heading to college ! Stay safe and Carry on .
its part of being an animal keeper in general animals live animals die I felt like in this video you explained your reasoning behind your actions a lot throughout this video but I honestly think you shouldn't have to but I get why you did because of the people that commented in your previous video
I didn't realise you were still in school! I thought you just looked really young. For someone so young you have a good head on your shoulders. Keep up the good work:)
The first time my Jackson's chameleon mated I left the male in the same cage with the female. Jacksons give live birth. At this date there was little information on chameleon husbandry. I knew it was about time because I had talked to the herpetologist at the National zoo in Washington DC. I didn't remove the male as I was instructed . I was at school and Mrs. Jackson started dropping baby chameleons. Mr. Jackson moved into place and as soon as they broke free of the embryo sac and started climbing up the branch he was eating them. She was still giving birth when I got home so I was able to save some. According to my Mother he ate about 10 or so. Live and learn the hard way sometimes.
Good video. But just a tip. Never let a pet free roam without your super vision. Especially a tegu, a lizard that is smart, and can easily unlock a cage. Otherwise glad to see everything is okay!
Blue is a handful, and knows how to open the doors to his enclosure, but he definitely didn't unlatch the hognose's cage... I can't say for certain how the snake escaped, but I do believe it had been out and about for at least a few hours.
Accidents happen, Daniel. Don't beat yourself up about it. Live and learn is my motto. Glad Blue is okay, though. Glad to see that you're back...missed you!
Sorry for the loss of your beautiful hognose snake. But I'm glad to hear at least blue and the rest of your friends are all ok. Keep up the videos, you rock.
New sub, professional quality videos. You're talented as hell. Also I'm 19 so you're really relatable to me. Also you don't deserve any backlash, there are people like Taylor Nicole Dean out there. You're are professional. Mistakes happen. Worst case scenario all animals are eaten, only one was. Also I can imagine it's harder to take care of a snake you don't see 85% percent of the time because he's burrowed.
I'm trying to convince my parents to let me get a reptile license and a snake (probably a diamond or jungle python). My mother doesn't really like the idea of frozen thawed rats though. On another note, my school has built a frog pond near the sport grounds for the endangered growling grass frogs that live on the sports campus to breed in
i'm guessing you also live in aus? if so, nice. i may be getting a basic reptile license soon, just because my parents dislike snakes i'll just be getting a few pygmy mulga monitors or ackies.
Dang Dan, looking fancier than usual with that jacket! I like it. Haha. On a more serious note, there's nothing you could have done about the incident, and neither you nor Blue can be blamed for it. Keep going strong as usual.
Please, please don't be too hard on yourself. Freak accidents happen. You are an awesome Herp Keeper/youtuber/educator/person. I am happy Blue is ok tho
I'm so sorry for your loss. Escapes happen, and sometimes they are out of our control and/or unforeseeable. Everybody has had an animal/pet escape right under their nose, especially in the snake-keeping hobby, and as much as we would like to go back to that point when the escape occurred, there's not much we can do because we can't. In my opinion, escapes or losses, as saddening or disheartening or depressing as they may be, are essential in the reptile hobby because they serve as lessons that we can think back on in the future so the same mistake is not made again. I understand the hognose was not in your care for very long, but you just can't help but feel, even with wild-caught or new animals, like you have a sentimental or intimate connection with that animal. You did what you thought was best for the well-being of the snake, and keeping it most likely was with the increased population of feral cats in your area. He/she most likely would have been killed and eaten sooner by an animal that shouldn't even be in the wild. Try to ignore the shameful comments "hating" on you, if any at all. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss, you have my condolences... RIP🐍 p.s. keep up the good work on the videos.
your back im so glad i just had surgery and dont beat ur self up things happen i think what u did with the hognose was right it truly is sad what happend
Thank you so much. You are one of my favorite youtubers. Please reptly to this comment. Thanks. And also thank you so much for showing us youtubers your reptiles. I absolutly love your reptiles. And also one last question, How much gallons aproximated is you Hog Island Boa Constrictors cage. Just wondering because i might get one thanks. Blease reply.
You should not blame yourself mate. It is completely logical to think that he was hiding in his cage. It is realy unfortunate that your tegu found him first, I am soory for your losses, and keep up the good work
My animals come from a lot of different sources - some are rescues, some are bought from local enthusiasts, some are bought at expos... When I buy online, it's always from kingsnake.com. If you browse the classified ads on that site you can get in touch with breeders and specialists and see pictures of the exact animal you're buying before it's shipped.
Don't beat ur self up like that. It was completely not your fault. I know you feel guilty right now but it happens and it wasn't your fault. Stay awesome and keep making your videos. :)
it's not all your fault or blues or the snakes it's simply nature the way yiu went about this was the best you could have . I'm sorry Daniel or however you spell that. much love sent you bud.
I'm so sorry for your losses. Your initial decision was not a bad one. It's always hard to breed certain reptiles. Many species don't have a very high thriving rate. I'm going through my own struggles right now. I have my own Argentine Black and White Tegu. His name is Khadgar. I have an indoor enclosure and an outdoor enclosure for when the weather is suitable. When I was not watching and when he was in the outdoor enclosure (which is a similar style to a chicken coop), he dug beneath the fencing and left the enclosure. I've been in contact with local animal control, rescues, vets, and neighbors. We haven't found him yet. :(
Dylan Gregory crazy news! We found Khadgar! He must have had a run in with another neighborhood critter. His tail has been ripped off... but it is healing and he is otherwise healthy and has his appetite!
A few months ago my cornsnake escaped and my cats ate her. We don't know what happened, it was during the night so we didn't see/hear anything. We don't know if she pushed the cover or if we forgot to lock it, also we think that she escaped the room by the small space between the door and the floor. I am still feeling extremely upset and guilty about what happened and probably won't have any cornsnake ever again. However, I learned a lot from that mistake and now I'm extra careful about locking every cage that I have. I have a BP and a boa will soon join our family, I'm sure that this incident made me a better keeper. It still makes me feel sick to think about it but life goes on, what happened was an accident. I know it's been a long time but I'm leaving this comment because I know that it still happens!
It does happen! I managed to leave the lid off of my ball python enclosure just the other day, but caught it in time. I don't think it's worth putting blame on anyone when it happens - much easier to learn from past mistakes and improve upon them in the future.
I've heard that plants can sometimes have a hard time transitioning from being aquatic, like in aquaponics to being terrestrial or in a vivarium. Really sucks that your snake died, but don't beat yourself up over it
I think you and Blue just had no clue! You are both innocent! You have so many animals, that you probably can't notice every little detail, which is fine! Blue just saw him somewhere and instinct took over! Both of you did nothing wrong!
That is just part of keeping reptiles, I have had two of my snakes escape due to my own fault, one unfortunately did not make it and the other passed about a month later. I still keep reptiles and Now I am more expirienced and know what not to do. Don't be hard on your self.
If the baby geckos need perfect conditions in order to survive how do they manage in the wild? or is there an incredibly high mortality rate for them as well? definitely not an attack, just curious.
Well, as I mentioned, I didn't provide for them as well as I could have. In the wild, they already have proper heating, lighting, humidity, and usually proper access to food and water. I can't say for certain why exactly they passed, but one or two of these conditions may not quite have been met.
Listen man, you really can't blame yourself for that. I have had hognoses and they can disappear for a while in their tanks. I am sorry it happened to you man, but you have done infinitely more good than harm.

dude dont beat yourslf up i think you do a outstanding job taking care of all of those animals\
Unfortunately learning from your mistakes is the best you can do sometimes. Glad you're stayin positive.
I look up to you as a role model, and you did nothing wrong. you will learn from this experience and become a better herpkeeper
stay awesome

I love the dramatic pause, then the,”He ate my snake” I never saw that coming 😂
You shouldn't get backlash. It was an accident and you feel bad enough, learned your lesson on your own
I admire that you took responsibility for what happened, not many people do that nowadays and it's nice to see honesty and transparency! 😊
Don't blame yourself man it happens and respect the honesty . If it wasn't the tegu it would have been a cat or a uneducated homeowner that ended the hog nose . I'm honestly really impressed with Blue!
Blue a savage
ikr
whoa!! nature took hold! Your Tegu is so brutal!! love him! Keep up all the good work man!
Dude don't worry 😉 my worst escape was my fire Nellie road climbed out of his tank and I found him 3 years later on a shelf in a different room
I know this is 2 years old but man thats a damn stealth toad
I didn't realise you were still in school! I thought you just looked really young. For someone so young you have a good head on your shoulders. Keep up the good work:)

Absolutely - I have no clue how many gecko hatchlings I've lost to the same fate.
Victorseafog
that's the worst man 😣

I'm trying to convince my parents to let me get a reptile license and a snake (probably a diamond or jungle python). My mother doesn't really like the idea of frozen thawed rats though.

Dang Dan, looking fancier than usual with that jacket! I like it. Haha. On a more serious note, there's nothing you could have done about the incident, and neither you nor Blue can be blamed for it. Keep going strong as usual.
Don't feel bad it's the circle of life
I admire you taking responsibility for an honest accident

That tegu is straight savage 😎
Daniel Viola you have no heart because you made a joke about an animal dieing
Harper Phillips clearly you don't understand humor. And animals eating other animals isn't wrong or bad. It's just life dude
k77 i know I do strongly have a sense of humor but he's acting like its a joke and I just gave him my opinion this is not meant to be offensive
your back im so glad i just had surgery and dont beat ur self up things happen i think what u did with the hognose was right it truly is sad what happend
daniel you are how i wanna be, reptiles etc. but i just love your videos
I legit thought that that was a jar of nutella in the background
Fruit flies - just a bit more protein than Nutella!
AfroHerpkeeper I bet it's dart frogs 😀☺☺
Miss Chaos Wolf Nutella is gross

it's not all your fault or blues or the snakes it's simply nature the way yiu went about this was the best you could have . I'm sorry Daniel or however you spell that. much love sent you bud.
love that you called the snake an individual XD
Omg your bearded dragon has the same name as mine 😀😀

Shannon Drum my friends Savannah Monitors escaped in the same fashion, however they showed up 2 months later in his own backyard
Dylan Gregory I certainly hope. I'm just so worried about him.
Shannon Drum that is understandable, i would be worried to if my animals got out, hope you find your Tegu
Dylan Gregory crazy news! We found Khadgar! He must have had a run in with another neighborhood critter. His tail has been ripped off... but it is healing and he is otherwise healthy and has his appetite!

My Chinese water dragon hasn't been wanting crickets lately and will only accept super worms. Any recommendations on what to do?
what are you going to bring to college and whats staying home
Don't be too hard on yourself.
I've heard that plants can sometimes have a hard time transitioning from being aquatic, like in aquaponics to being terrestrial or in a vivarium. Really sucks that your snake died, but don't beat yourself up over it
Blue was like "snake???? You mean food???"
I wish he does a collab with Alex from Goherping.
Nigel Cranberry bruh yeessssssss, except Alex is very very against love feeding of rodents
Don't feel bad mistakes happen.
Don't beat yourself up. It is not your fault. The people who judge are considering themselves perfect when nobody in this whole world can be perfect.
I think you and Blue just had no clue! You are both innocent! You have so many animals, that you probably can't notice every little detail, which is fine! Blue just saw him somewhere and instinct took over! Both of you did nothing wrong!

Man when you told me about your tegu (Tegu right?) eating your hognose I couldn't believe it
If the baby geckos need perfect conditions in order to survive how do they manage in the wild? or is there an incredibly high mortality rate for them as well? definitely not an attack, just curious.

Ouch, well you're a honest man telling this, and I respect that. I won't ride ya in the comments, I posted my thoughts on the hognose.
(Sorry im replying late im new to your channel.) Every herp keeper has experienced reptiles getting out of their tank, even me. I've had plenty of snakes and toads escape. It was just a coincidence blue was walking around, dont beat yourself up. The lizard babys died, plenty of hatchlings dont make it to adulthood. Dont let haters make you feel bad.
badass lizard
u have amazing animals
Lesson of the day: Never leave your roaming animals unattended in a room full of potential prey. Hognoses are such sweet snakes, such sad news
I got a Lizzy to 🙌😂😂
Don't blame yourself it was Nature take it corse and you trying to help that snake so in my eyes you are a good role model
im so so sorry for what happened with your snake thats really sad but at least you know now to watch carefully for your snakes and other animals
Super
Blue is a savage
How do you prevent escapes of hissing roaches?
I've got a 1" layer of Vaseline (petroleum jelly) around the lip of the tub - the roaches can't walk over it, so it keeps them in place
Is that reliable? How often should you renew it?
My madagascar hissing cockroaches bred like crazy, and just to warn you, the exo terra terrariums are not escape proof for the litte babys as they squeeze through the "clamp-on" top. My whole room was infested, and I still (a few weeks after getting rid of the roaches entirely) find dead baby cockroaches behind or under furniture from time to time as they probably starve there.
