  • 04.1992. another on written in my early twenties in '85 or '86, originally titled 'Mood Walk', with 'mood' being a euphemism for 'mode'. before that time in the early '90s i was mostly steeped in basic tertial harmony, that is harmony stacked in thirds, with my main teacher being the infamous 'Real Book' that all educated musicians of jazz knew at that time. i left my proper human teacher after one year of perfect lessons, because he was a perfect teacher, at 15, and have been doing it on my own ever since. i do better on my own and not so well with another teaching me, same when i was in school, so my harmony and composition teachers became the standout unique composers and musical innovators in that book, which for me were Theloneous Monk, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, and Coltrane, all for different reasons, though. Ornette would have to wait a few years for me to get him, and Chick and Bill Evans were more players to me than compositional or musical innovators. creating a new music is very different than creating your own style. the actual structure of how the possibility of the arrangement of tones has to be broken down and then reconfigured in a new way in order to garner that kind of distinction, for me, and those other guys surely fit that bill.
