    Interesting how it is in the uk, because in the eu its pretty much opposite everybody drives diesels here, and it is quite hard to sell a petrol because majority is targeting diesels and that is in the cities not the country side

    I'm one of those who owned a 2003 E46 318i with the N42 engine and I can confidently say that,, the engine gave me few headaches. All I did was to change oil @7,500km, Used Shell helix 5w40.. recommend oil brand if you live in Africa like me.. Used bmw oil and air filter.. The only major issue was valve seal problem.. timing chain.. Never had any problem..

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  Рік тому

      Can I ask why you use 5w40 ? The N42 doesn’t suffer high oil consumption problems. If it does, then that was purely because of the valve stem seals but for N42 you can continue using 5w30 on them without a issue.

    Quite blunt and probably 50% correct! And some people may think twice before buying if they ever here and heed what your saying. I got a e39 diesel sport and must say 5 years of ownership it's been trouble free with normal maintenance only 1 injector and cat . I bought an e53 x5 petrol to avoid the congestion charge a year ago and 2k already and bloody radio (bm54) and air ride (warning light on but still seems to be working) still needs sorting so I'd love to hear your views on these workhorses.

      I have done a lot of videos on the BMW X5 E53 check my channel. I had one myself not to long ago oh and it was the M57 😅 but mine was low mileage I bought it on 70k got rid at 89k

      Have enjoyed lots of your videos including the bm54 removal 👍. And yes mine was is low mileage and reasonably priced I think I'll sell it on in the autumn but it's still a very practical good looking suv/mpv. Haven't got a clue what's comparable though, any thoughts?

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  Рік тому +1

      That was my issue when I sold mine nothing compares 😅 that’s why I haven’t purchased another one because finding something that replaceable isn’t easy. I don’t even know another good 4x4 like the X5 I mean for towing I wouldn’t choose to use a X5 as they don’t like it. But for going around in a big car it’s great but even myself I go over all the cars and there is nothing I can find that can really match it.

    I've got a B48. Most common fault is oil filter housing gasket failing, leaking coolant, around 60K miles. Mine did just this - the plastic filter housing degrades with heat over time, losing its seal. I replaced mine myself with an aluminium one. Pain in the ass to do, but not too bad. Other issue is oil return line of turbo leaking. Otherwise solid.

  • @igotaction

    Code out the start stop on the N20 and the timing chain will last a lot longer. Change oil every 5000 and make sure you don't run low on oil.

    Hi there, my father has a bmw 730li 7 series 2004. I come from a country where we don't have a main branch for spare parts. The ecu got broken and we couldn't find it anywhere. Once we try to turn it on it wouldn't. Do you think that any ecu with the same ports will work ?
    I hope you respond to my inquiry.

    Hi mate, I've got a 330Ci 2004 that I've had for years, spent absolutely loads on it and got it to a really nice level everything is sound and it's a really nice example but need something bigger. I am absolutely not interested in diesels as you say. I'm tempted by the 540i E39 although I keep getting told the 530i (same engine as I have now obviously) is the better choice because of the 540 timing chains etc. I believe it's the M62 engine? What are your thoughts on that engine? Should I go for an as well looked after 540 as I can find or would I be better staying with M54? Money and running costs isn't really an issue, although I don't want to have to have the engine out for repairs or anything. I do most things myself but I don't have the experience to rebuild the engine or anything like that not would I want to have it done if I can help it. I just like the older BMWs more than like the E60 although I agree the 545i and 550i are beasts. What are your thoughts? Am I better off staying away from the E39 540i? Thanks in advance! Great video as always and agree with you about the crappy 4 pots.

    True Dean but the M57 is a very reliable engine if serviced. But so cheap and common that they've got to be mapped and ragged there so much fun `E39 530d manual`. All cars die enjoy them and scrap em😊

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  Рік тому +2

      Oh I agree all cars die that’s correct. You have to weigh it all up and if the car is even worth it long term. Now for a M3 , M5 , E30 something of that type, yes it’s well worth it to be repaired and not let it die. But for a diesel it ain’t but to be honest the M57 is bulletproof as I said if not messed about with. The 535D is quick as it is stock so I have never understood why people feel the need to remap them for what reason ? I mean it’s a diesel it’s never going to be a high speed muncher if your looking for that top speed thrill you need to pay to play.

    This story about diesel engines really surprised me.
    Yes, everyone in the rest of Europe drives 520d and 530d or series 3 because they are cheap 😁.
    What about gasoline engines and valve seals, almost on every model, vanos, chain, etc.
    You buy a V8 and in a few years dig around the engine and change the valve seals.🤕

    Pah 4 cylinder M3 LEGEND the first and the last M car to actually WIN anything. What did the 6/8 cylinder M cars ever win? NOTHING. M47D20T20 as long as you get rid of the swirl-flaps and code out the EGR with an uprated Darkside Developments FMIC you can easily push out 210-220BHP. I have been pushing out 200BHP/300lb-ft from 42000-153000 miles my steptronic 6HP19 torque convertor max capacity is 300lb-ft. E87 120d 55 plate Sport Auto, Bilstein B12 kit, M3 rear subframe bushes, M3 rear and front tension strut and LCAs, Darkside Developments FMIC. It's not quite as good as my 987.2 Boxster PSE, Sport Chrono, PDK, PASM + DSC V1 but the 4 cylinders are lighter in the nose than the 6 and it has four seats...Diesel are good cross-country and torquey...335d x-drive nice. If you want nice sound a Boxster 6 cylinder with roof down and PSE open hard to beat even for the V8/V10 M cars. Boxster sounds exotic...

As he was driving, a new BMW passed him by. Despite the BMW being newer and faster, the guy was happy and content with his trusty old car.

      Nope you have N57 even though the timing chains are a big issue on them I suppose it’s a good thing as it keeps people away from them doing stupid things with them as it ain’t a case of when it’s a case of it will break. So people are frightened to f**k with them doing everything they shouldn’t thank god. As for council estate aswell, you did live on one not any more but you probably know what I mean though from it. That when you enter one you know it’s full of 18d 20d 30d all over the place. Growing up one and living on one now is a different story entirely. But I ain’t here to judge im just saying how it is for again ‘Most People’

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  Рік тому +3

      No as I said if it’s been a looked after one and not treated like crap and obviously not messed with then you have a good one as the engine is bulletproof and so is the gearbox if serviced it’s when it’s remapped it puts a lot of strain on the torque converter and the clutch packs being revved to redline and that’s what blows them up. Here you cannot find any that ain’t been remapped believe me it’s very very very hard to find one with low mileage and been cared for by a enthusiast properly. But all in all the M57 is bulletproof but because yours is XI you deffinetely don’t want that gearbox going out

      If that’s referring to me I have experience in many many more then just one car. In the Uk finding one that’s been very well looked after is like finding a needle in a hay stack. And I don’t have experience of one car I have thousands of people on this channel who are the Guinea pigs for testing and they learn from that experience but I also had friends who have gone through this same stuff.
