Set was mentioned in one episode of the show Samurai Jack. While Set himself doesn’t make an appearance he has 3 minions in the show with heads that resemble his ambiguous beast head. They were imprisoned by the other gods until Aku released them to destroy Jack. Interestingly they couldn’t be destroyed by Jack’s sword, even though it was forged by gods from the different pantheons of the Earth, including the Egyptian sun god Ra. The only way Jack could defeat them was to assemble a golden scarab, which would summon Ra when assembled.
In fact, the plot of Disney's Lion King (1994) was actually derived from the Osiris myth of ancient Egypt (Osiris as Mufasa, Seth as Scar, and Horus as Simba).
Like Hades, Anubis is also a benevolent deity who was demonized in the modern era without realizing that Set is the real big bad of Egyptian mythology.
Egyptian mythology was my first one. At least, it is the first that I remember being charmed by, reading books and books about it. I love it. Thank you so much for the episode. You can certainly explore more in depth the thematic of the combat, why not?
Your videos are amazing, man. I can’t wait for you to make videos about Jowangsin (Korean goddess of fire), Xochiquetzal (Aztec goddess of love and beauty), Innana/Ishtar’s descent into the underworld (both the Sumerian and Semitic/Akkadian versions), and Lieu Hanh (Vietnamese goddess and one of the Four Immortals in Vietnamese mythology). As always, keep up the spectacular work showcasing more of the world’s various mythologies👍!
just adding to the conversation… it’s interesting that their god of Chaos is associated with the hyena they play a similar role as the wolverine does in Northern climates 🤔 cheers #2Spirit
I’m honored that you brought my grandfather Set into the picture. Sorry about the late comment but I had some troubles with the internet connection and the wifi connection all week which wasn’t fun.
Set is much much more important when it comes to understanding similar figures and stories in Mediterranean. He was synchronized with Typhoon by the Greeks. Early Christians were said to worship a donkey headed God which is almost certainly a propaganda by Egyptians. This donkey headed God is a syncretism between Set, Baal, Yahweh and Jesus which later lead to Abraxas and Demiurge.
I can totally see Set's animal as a Wild Dog considering the reputation given to dogs in the Middle East (they were seen as dirty, vile, and greedy). I can also see it as an Aardvark. Back then people would've looked at one of those and thought 'what the heck is THAT?!' and avoided it... seeing it as another representative of the desert. Personally, I feel a Wild Ass could fit into the role quite nicely as well considering they are viewed as untamable and violent. A Hyena works just as perfectly 😁 The contendings of Set and Horus are interesting... funny in some moments, disgusting in one particular instant. It's worth a video 😀
I personally think that the sha was once an actual creature, Native to Egypt, but the Egyptians associated it with set and hence forth was probably killed on site either bones being destroyed which would explain why there is next to no evidence of any animal with these characteristics, the sha I believe was a close member of the canine family, but I don’t have any explanation for the forked tail, Pls like and replie
Anteaters actually aren't native to Egypt or any area of Africa for that matter! They're found in South America! Also they have very short ears, not the tall blocky ones that Set has!
Yea like it made no sense the way they portrayed Anubis in the Mummy 2. Anubis was not the kind of deity to trade souks for wishes. That's more of what Set would do.
Set has to be one of the most fine chaotic evil gods out their. Unlike others like Hades who's usally good compared to his other philanderous brothers, Poseidon and Zeus or Anubis who isn't truly evil but rather a god with a morbid background. But Set on the other hand is just plain downright devious and evil. Their is no misunderstanding or morbid background... nope, just pure chaotic evil.. Set is a fine god, no cap
About 13,000 years ago at the beginning of the Age of Leo, the Anunnaki came here from Nibiru. Cain murdered his half-brother Abel (fratricide), and Abel was replaced in Abel's likeness by Set (Seth, Saturn, Satan). Set and Abel were sons of Eve and the snake man (the dragon man). Cain was the offspring of Eve and Adam. Adam's first wife was Lilith. The bloodline of Set became the bloodline of Baal, Count Dracula, the House of Windsor, and the Hatfield's of West Virginia, USA. In the 1960s, the top of the bloodline of Set came to my hometown (Albany, Oregon) using the surname Bailey.
I too agree with the notion that many such stories might be hazy memories of real events. The long fight between Horace and Set might be describing a dark age in their history, where Egypt was suffering war and chaotic weather, among other disasters. The Egyptians living afterwards are unsure what exactly occurred, and being committed to their religion so strongly they were quick to attribute major events to the Gods. But they vaguely know SOMETHING big happened in the past, much like how Greece recalled Troy in its mythology.
Apophis is the true evil of the Egyptian mythology. Set never became a villain until the hyksos conquered Egyptians and it took a century or so to throw them out. And in that time Set became a villain. Ra became old and senile. Horus became popular and set became a villain. Although not everywhere. It varied from city to city. There isn’t really Egyptian mythology. There is memphite mythology, theban mythology, etc. and variation by time periods.
"Violence is not the answer. Violence is a question...and the answer is yes" -Set
Would I like to see an episode depicting the battles between Set and Horus? Based on this video alone, hell yes!
I would like to see a video about the Contendings of Horus and Set. That would be awesome.

@user-md6vc1zf8j My dad said the same thing, that made me look more into Egyptian mythology.
Absolutely
Set has a Spinosaurus head, those fossils existed only in Egypt and the Egyptians brought fossils to Set’s temples
I didn’t know that the ancient Egyptians brought Spinosaurus bones to the temple of Set.
@@DaughterofAnubis they didn’t find that specific dinosaur’s fossil there but it’s certainly possible that it happened
@@lucaricci1987 Makes sense.
I've been waiting for this episode for a very long time. Thank you for making this video.

Anubis really is more of an undead Judge. Being fair to all that came before him, casting judgement based on someones actions in life.
I always thought Set was a serpent, not a dog or jakel.
Set I believe was more like Lucifer and was cast out into his role with no choice and was driven mad in the process
Well don’t worry, in my Egyptian mythology animated series I’ll make sure to do him justice.

Set's head looks like that of an anteater.
I would also like to see more videos on other evil gods.

Excellent video, brilliantly done.🌹💜🌍
I for one would like a video of the contendings of the two, please and thank you in advance. Also another well done video.

I think the Set animal is supposed to be an unknown animal because he represents the Wild.
Set is obviously an Anteater
But Anteaters aren't native to Egypt or any other part of Africa, they live in South America!

@@MythologyUnleashed Oh my gosh you’re absolutely right
Aardvark would be my guess.

I remember encountering that deity reading the Kane Chronicles to my cat.

Can you do an episode on Bastet, the Egyptian cat goddess? Bastet doesn't get much recognition but she's really interesting.
Could we please get more desert mythology videos?

I'm not sure what animal was used for Set. Maybe an anteater? Shin Megami Tensei has him as a dragon.
Yes
The rabbit in the never ending box...
Awesome story... I think Set was a demonic equine of some sort
I think the reason his head is so strange is to add to the chaos he represents.

What kind of animal is Set? According to the Fourth Doctor, he's an alien. You're welcome.
Loved those episodes.
He’s a Spinosaurus
Aardvark/donkey but most likely aardvark
Modern Egyptians have demonized Anubis, a good deity, since they fail to recognize that Set is the true villain of Egyptian mythology.
Have I been saying enigmatic wrong my whole life?
I don't think Set has a specific animal's head. Set, like The Devil himself, takes the form of what ferocious wild animal
he wants.
He looks part anteater (snout) and donkey (ears).
You should look over other chaos gods from around the world. Eris from Greece comes to immediate mind in that regard.

I kind of wonder if this mythology in part was caused by ancient priesthoods doing crazy politics stuff thousands of years ago.
