I can understand avoiding singlespeed and its subgenre, track, because they are usually for enthusiasts who know what they are getting into with a bicycle. Recumbents are not popular with beginners either and are priced out of the target. However I believe he should have added in cross/gravel bikes. They make good beginner bikes (the only problem being drop bars for some), and fit in the “if a mountain bike and a road bike had a baby” model he came up with - not sure the car analogy though. The only issue is the larger manufacturers haven’t yet introduced entry level bikes in this category yet, they’re still priced and spec’d too high. Looking at direct sakes like BikesDirect, it looks that they should only be $50 higher than an entry road, the added price being for the mechanical discs, something which should be in a fitness hybrid anyways. Overall, much cheaper that a sport hybrid unless that hybrid has an unusable front shock.
Great points. We do a video breaking down road bikes and include cross/gravel into that category. Basically anything with drop handlebars, we throw into that category. Thanks for watching!
