EVERYONE talks about Vernon Reid, and yes... he's amazing. But can the damned RHYTHM SECTION get some love?!?! 💯 Will Calhoun and Muzz Skillings are THE heroes of this song! 💯😎 Just a groove that allows for Corey and Vernon to create anything and make it work!
One of the lyrically the most relevant rock songs of all time . And an amazingly talented band that got overlooked over time. We all love this bands since we first heard them back in the day .
The lyric that gives me chills every time I hear it is "You gave me power in YOUR god's name." Thinking of all of the megalomaniacs, supreme leaders, and corrupt politicians in history (and in recent memory) who have used religion as a tool to control the masses while most likely not believing a word of it themselves.
The best thing that this song is now known for is being the theme song entrance for WWE star CM punk. He’s been using this song for his entrance music probably over 10 years. Well I know it’s been over 10 years. It perfectly fits his straight edge persona. It’s a good song. I liked back in the day. I remember when this song was brand new.wonderful group
I get chills everytime a I hear the lyrics "You gave me fortune You gave me fame You gave me power in your God's name!" only a couple songs give me constant goosebumps and this is one of them
I'd only ever heard this song by Living Colour, always liked it but never checked them out. In 2015 I saw them open for Aerosmith, and damn was i missing out. Living Colour has an awesome live show, great energy.
"When a leader speaks that leader dies." Any leader that TRULY exposes the corruption of the system gets attacked by the system. I love this song. I put it up there with "Civil War" by Guns'n'Roses.
This group was epic and the words to this song is beyond deep. One of my always favorites songs. I saw them perform in Brooklyn and they was amazing. When they did this song, I was in trance. Vernon was in beast mode and underrated.
The entire band is extremely talented! The singer! The drummer! The bassist! Mr. Vernon Reid DESTROYING that guitar!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The little girl throughout the video IS KEY! You see her watching TV, as the band plays the song, she becomes mesmerized, completely engrossed. Just as the song comes to a close, she leans forward to shut off the TV. This song is an indictment of the industrial complex that is the mainstream media.....ALL platforms of media. It is the 'Cult of Personality' that you can not take at face value
You're throwing some stuff at us now !!. It does me good to get out of my comfort zones , although this Rocked which suits . How catchy was this though !! . I could see you really enjoyed this , and ...It's a MASSIVE WIN !! . The guitar player was not holding back in the solo , and what a singer !!! . Great Video again .. Well done Mia ... Nice of you telling us about the little mistakes you make at the end , You didn't have to , but nice you wanted to tell us 🙂
I remember after this video first came out on MTV, I went out and got the cassette for this album. They have quite a few good songs, but this one is transcendent. One of the best songs of the 80s for me,.
I love watching someone hear a freaking awesome rock song the first time. And this is a freaking awesome rock song. No small achievement that Vernon was able to make that guitar solo as gut-punch powerful as those lyrics. Perfection.
A cult of personality, or a cult of the leader,[1] is the result of an effort which is made to create an idealized and heroic image of a leader by a government, often through unquestioning flattery and praise. Historically, it has developed through techniques of mass media, propaganda, spectacle, the arts, patriotism, and government-organized demonstrations and rallies. A cult
Vernon Reid was a jazz guitarist who helped found The Black Rock Coalition in the mid 80s; this band was his project from that bringing together of likeminded musicians and artists. And yeah, he's an absolute shredder on the guitar. And the vocalist is Corey Glover- he's the nephew of actor Danny Glover. I remember seeing this band at the first Lollapalooza . . . 31 years ago (yikes). Excellent reaction!
You HAVE to see their tribute to Chris Cornell. They cover Blowing Up The Outside World. The singer gets very emotional during the video. Living Colour is SO ICONIC!!!!
The singer was in the movie PLATOON, the morning after the big battle he stabbed himself in the leg so he'd be a two timed wounded so he could go home.
This was a mega-hit in 1988 when i was 12 years old....they were overnight legends for obvious reasons.... *everywhere* in tne country, i was in the south. Also, ive been playimg for 31 years, but ive getting more serious about lead guitar lately, its time to watch 20 youtube guitar lessons thatll break this thing down so i can learn it, lolol....great! Reaction! Thank u!
First time i heard and saw this song (1987) was on SNL....blew me away!!.i was expecting the new rap sound around that time, nope it was in your face rock and roll baby....been a fan ever since.
All these guys are vituosos in their own right, drums, vocals, bass, and especially vocals and guitar! If you break it down and isolate each player , you will hear genius level playing, not only on a technical level but also an artistic level. These guys went platinum in a very short time just from this song! Now thats pure talent. Love these guys and they are still touring if you want to see them✌️💯👍
I remember when this was out and I STILL love it all these years later. It was a joy to see you experience it the first time. It's a fantastic track and it still stands up today. And the really cool thing is, these four insanely talented guys were prophets. Thanks for sharing this. D.
I was twenty when this came out, never heard of all black rock group, as a white dude I still enjoy this timeless song these guys set the stage for other rock artists and they nailed it they are badass.🤟
You are right that song does apply today on everything that going on... That is a very strong message and he still singing today.. I hope to get to see him play
The opening was from Malcom X's speech "Message to the Grass Roots". The title was penned by Nikita Khrushchev in response to Joseph Stalin "On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences". Other historical figures seen and heard in this video include JFK, FDR, MLK, Benito Mussolini, and Mahatma Gandhi. According to Vernon Reid, "a famous German" was originally also in the lyrics but was pulled due to fear that referring to him would be misconstrued and too controversial.
Burning Vernon Reid, amazing guitarist & yes this is definitely an Anthem without a doubt & the whole band is great & if nobody has said his name, the lead singers name is Corey Glover
They were an awesome band... Back in the day when this was a hit you couldn't turn on MTV without hearing it. So if you really like this video, I recommend that you check out a band called SEVENDUST... Maybe the first song you check out ought to be DENIAL.
I saw them perform this not long after it came out at a local venue here. It was a great show. And then it got a pretty huge revival a while later because it was included in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas which billions and billions of people played, basically, laugh.
Our Kings Reign Supreme...They just gotta get out of our way.... Still a classic Band! Keep enjoying OUR Talents Sis in every genre! *NewFace Magazine LV Team Las Vegas!
Mia... There was an offshoot band that came when Living Colour split.... Jungle Funk... They only made one album... But, bass and drums and vocals would knock your socks off....
One of my all time favs!! I agree.. with the recent and current political environment this song seems more relevant than when it originally came out.. which is kinda sad, but a warning we all need to heed.
I like this new format to reacting. This song is very heavy and requires listening to what he's saying so it's cool to see some real time reactions to this.
EVERYONE talks about Vernon Reid, and yes... he's amazing.
But can the damned RHYTHM SECTION get some love?!?! 💯
Will Calhoun and Muzz Skillings are THE heroes of this song! 💯😎 Just a groove that allows for Corey and Vernon to create anything and make it work!
Vernon Reid is easily one of the most (if not the most) underrated guitarists of this era.
Steve Stevens enters the chat... :) You are right though Reid is up there.
Very much so tragically underrated
Agreed!! Very Underrated he Deserves more Credit!!!
Word. Saw them in 91 when I was 16 jaw wide open.
fr!!! the whole band is amazing, i just saw them the other day opening for extreme, they're fantastic!
One of the lyrically the most relevant rock songs of all time . And an amazingly talented band that got overlooked over time. We all love this bands since we first heard them back in the day .
I just said that on another reaction. HAS to be one of the best written songs and so iconic!
Cort Glover was also in the movie "Platoon " way back when.
Totally underrated band. Thanks for giving them some love!
Incredible live and studio band
Yes
Except in the pro wrestling community thanks to CM Punk
Corey Glover, the vocalist, was also in the movie Platoon, and also starred as Judas on Broadway in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar! ❤️
Vernon Reid is an underrated guitar legend, one of the greats of the time

It is the 'Cult of Personality' that you can not take at face value
I highly recommend "Open Letter (To a Landlord)" by Living Colour. It's another powerful message song by them, plus it's just a great song too.
You're throwing some stuff at us now !!. It does me good to get out of my comfort zones , although this Rocked which suits . How catchy was this though !! . You are GORGEOUS!
It's as relevant today as it was back then. We used to rock out to this song.
I love watching someone hear a freaking awesome rock song the first time. And this is a freaking awesome rock song. No small achievement that Vernon was able to make that guitar solo as gut-punch powerful as those lyrics. Perfection.
The lyrics were relevant then, now, and will be forever.
Now imagine being a teenager and this drops on MTV. Great times.
This song shook me to my core when it came out. It wasn't like anything else on the radio. It was amazing then and it's amazing now.

2023 is the 35th anniversary of this song from their debut album, Vivid. They still tour believe it or not.

You HAVE to see their tribute to Chris Cornell. They cover Blowing Up The Outside World. The singer gets very emotional during the video. Living Colour is SO ICONIC!!!!
Love the group and this song kicks tail. The lead guitarist is phenomenal and the drum is Uber talented !!
The singer was in the movie PLATOON, the morning after the big battle he stabbed himself in the leg so he'd be a two timed wounded so he could go home.

IMO, this is one of the greatest songs of all time. Vocally, lyrically, instrumentally, it’s nothing short of spectacular.
The lead singer was also an actor and played a soldier in the great Vietnam war movie "Platoon".

Living Colour embodies something Prince wrote about on his Black Album: rock hard in a funky place
This band is amazing. I saw them on their first 3 tours. Just a hella great vibe.
They play at Riot Fest in Chicago often. Love Corey's voice.

I saw the band in a small club in San Francisco called the I-Beam long before they were well known. I was just a few feet from them.
You just know when someone is totally caught up in the music.
Letter to a landlord also has a very relevant message.
One of the best rock songs ever with a great message
Saw them at the Moon in Tallahassee around '93. Blew me away!

My go to band when I work out.Since they first came out.Enjoyed your reaction.
Legit Rockers. I have loved this song since it came out. Resonates today.
I always thought Reid's solo song "C. P. Time" should have been as big as "Cult" but it didn't happen.
The song lyrics have been relevant for the last 2000+ years. Songs about humanity are always relevant
'Only you can set you free.'
They were an awesome band... Back in the day when this was a hit you couldn't turn on MTV without hearing it.
So if you really like this video, I recommend that you check out a band called SEVENDUST... Maybe the first song you check out ought to be DENIAL.
"You gave me fortune, you gave me fame
You gave me power in your god's name"
If this song came out today people couldn't even

Always loved this song, and it is so speaks to where we are at today. 😎
Living colour were warning us, however unknowingly, about such dangerous creatures as donad trump. Take these lyrics to heart!😢
Try their song "Open Later to a Landlord"
Agree open letter to a landlord is a must!

If you want your mind to be totally blown away, I recommend you two Living Colour songs, "Wall" and "Love rears up its ugly head".
