Have people forgotten about little Richard, chuck berry & jimi hendrix. Im 46 year old English white girl. And this song was massively successful in the uk 🇬🇧 in the early nineties. The same as hes outfit back when i was a teenager consided fashionable. This band regardeless of any colour. Have sheer talent. Music should have no genre or colour. Its just talent. You should check out our English 90s band roachford
The lyrics are outstanding, and applicable today. “I exploit you, still you love me. . . “ I used this song to teach the concept of the cult of personality in high school world history classes in 1989-1991. Song made the point better than the textbook could. Students were amazed that I owned the album and saw them in concert.
I teach high school sociology, and I still use it. The kids don't think I'm AS cool as they would have thirty years ago, but it usually gets a positive response.
I met them at my college when they performed in concert to promote their first album. They were so down to earth. I have been a fan ever since, every album is amazing. They deserve more recognition for what they have contributed to music.
That would be more for diving. Surfers wear a spring suit. When the water is not yet warm enough without a suit, but hot with one. There is no way in hell he's wearing one of those. He would have a heat stroke. Lol
This came out when I was in high school. I lived in the suburbs. My friends and I were into Metallica and Ozzy at the time. When this song hit MTV, it was a banger and we listened to it all the time. It's still in my playlists. It also encouraged me to read more about leaders in history. More so than my teachers did. Vernon Reid is one of the greatest guitar players imo, and Corey Glover is a powerful singer.
Side note: the singer for Living Colour, Corey Glover, started his show business career trying to be an actor, and got cast in “Platoon•” according to a documentary on the film, he used to sing and play guitar with cast mate Johnny Depp at the hotel the cast stayed at to let everyone blow off steam.
Love this song. I saw them live in 1989 when they opened up for the Rolling Stones in Indianapolis on their Steel Wheels tour. My first concert. I'll never forget it!
This band has one of the best guitar solos of all time. Severely underrated! I feel like they opened the door for people like Howard Jones (Killswitch Engage/Light The Torch/Sion), Lajon Witherspoon (Sevendust), and Kadeem France (Loathe). Fucking amazing band.
When the drums kick back in and the rest of the band joins in it feels almost oppressive, absolutely dig it. Like a wall of sound, almost as if it was the masses rallying around the cult of personality. Plus the lyrics that come with it; "You gave me fortune, you gave me fame, you gave me power in your God's name!" Like the first half of the speaker is warning the listener, but after the solo the cult has taken over
Corey Glover is such a great rock vocalist. And Vernon Reid? An underrated shredder. Living Colour and the Cult were two criminally underrated bands of the 80's.
Vernon Reid is an amazing guitar player. I remember reading an interview with him in one of my guitar magazines like 25 or 30 years ago. I then bought his solo album "Mistaken Identity". This was in the very early days of the internet when we still bought CD's. Not a bad album. It definitely shows off his talent. There's some kickass jazz fusion playing on it. 😎
I’m a 50 year white man and this is one of my favorite all time rock bands. I’ve seen them live three times. Vivid is an album that is in the pantheon of great albums. They spoke an amazing message even to a white boy who lived suburbs when this hit the music scene. They should not be forgotten in rock history.
The world is catching up! Probably one of the more relevant songs in society today. The lead singer Corey Glover killed it in the movie Platoon as well.
Living color is amazing! I remember in high school our history teacher played us this song and told us to listen to the lyrics. Only time I paid attention 😂
In college, when I had my last final in 1989, I came back to my apartment and rocked out to this (and other songs, but definitely this). Let Vernon Reid rip your face off. And those lyrics... this song just hits on all cylinders.
Yeah man! These dudes f**king rock! Im a hard core metal head. And I play guitar. I'll tell you something, when I was a kid me and all my friends tried to learn the opening guitar riff. That is some complex shit!! Vernon Reid (in the white coat / red draws) is an absolute animal on that ESP guitar! Bravo Vernon!
I've always thought they deserved more than they got. They were a truly solid band. I loved this song (and many others) the first time I heard it. But if you want to go waaayy back...check out "A Band Called Death"
Their debut album VIVID came out in 1988 and got a lot of airplay on BET and MTV. I was barely out of high school. 2023 is the 35th anniversary of this album and song. The band: Corey Glover - lead vocals, Vernon Reid - guitar, Muz Skillings - bass, and Will Calhoun - drums.
Back in 1988, they got pegged as a "Black Rock Band" and people moved on. I wish people treated gangster rap like they did Living Color back then, they'd be alot less teen blk shootings. Yes im black too.
An excellent example of how we are ALL cursed w being human-the color of skin, religion, who you choose to love if you’re fortunate enough to find it, if you blindly follow a political ‘leader’…Talent is talent-just appreciate it. Not to mention but the message of this song hits hard and sadly is still relevant to this day.
These guys are amazing! If you want to see some crazy but fantastic ish, check out Zamrock. In the late 60s and 70s there was a scene in Zambia that was producing music that was a fusion of traditional African music and hard rock, psychedelic, blues funk, and garage rock. There's some absolute bangers in that mix! Cheers for digging this tune. Vernon Reid is a criminally overlooked guitar player. He's sick with it.
Another "black rock band" you might want to check out is Jimi Hendrix "Band of Gypsies" band, which had Jimi on guitar, Buddy Miles on drums, and Billy Cox on bass.
Living Color was spot on in their lyrics: ...You gave me power You gave me fame You gave me power in your God's name... This is an ongoing phenomenon that can be seen today as well as the 80's...
@boshidobrownreacts i say yo name Bo-she-doe, it's a bro name, nickname, i like it. Brother from another mother, cousin, etc. You real in yo vids. Remind me of friend from hi school, Dana. Yeah, we was in 80s, 90s. Dana and me were in a band together. And yep, he wore the bike pants under his jeans all the time. He was doing the jery curl at the time, but he was cool to hang with.
Yo idk if you like some real great soulful singing but i got one for ya whether you wanna react or just check out in your own time it Terrence Trent Darby London live 1995 singing Holding on to You... dude i revisited and been playing a couple weeks now. Had forgot the phenomenal voice that man has just saying
@@TheDivayenta yes I knew of wishing well and loved that song but this one is really so soulful I never saw him display in the one or 2 songs I knew he had that was popular at the time that he could sing this great it's really good
Yeah, I only know of 2 all "black" rock bands off the top of my head. These guys & Fishbone. Sevendust's lead singer Lajon Witherspoon is black, & plenty of group's have black members of course, but for all members to be, seems to be a rarity. Although I'm sure there are more I'm just unaware of.😊
No No No, you need to hear a band called the "BAD BRAINS" Ras Tafarians from D.C. who are the only band that I know of to mix Reggae / Punk/Metal together this brilliantly.... May I suggest "I against I" Nothing wrong with LC's song, but I am convinced that you will enjoy my suggestion.... JA!
It is not racist. There are too many white rock bands. I am white saying that. These guys are so amazing and so talented. Also, when it comes to great music like this, it doesn't matter what you look like.
Vernon Reid is a criminally underrated guitarist. His combination of technique, knowledge, and feel are absolutely incredible. 🤘
I agree. He is up there with Eddie Van Halen and Slash.
Have people forgotten about little Richard, chuck berry & jimi hendrix. Im 46 year old English white girl. And this song was massively successful in the uk 🇬🇧 in the early nineties. I don't forget Chuck Berry he was the first electric guitar hero.
The lyrics are outstanding, and applicable today. “I exploit you, still you love me. . . “
I used this song to teach the concept of the cult of personality in high school world history classes in 1989-1991. Song made the point better than the textbook could. Students were amazed that I owned the album and saw them in concert.
The guitarist was a legend when I was in high school in 1990
One of the best lines ever!!!💯
This song maybe the very reason they where never main stream. I imagine the powers that be were pretty pissed about this song.
I love it myself.
That is freakin' awesome!
That was Malcolm X talking at the top. Singer Corey Glover was wearing “ The Glove” - a surfer’s onesie.
Body Glove was a brand back in the day.
That would be more for diving. Surfers wear a spring suit. When the water is not yet warm enough without a suit, but hot with one. There is no way in hell he's wearing one of those. He would have a heat stroke. Lol
body glove was my shit....still got mine

cool info!
Fuck me!!!!! I just looked!!!! I was today years old!!! Thank you!!!!! Was going to suggest love rears it's ugly head and came upon your gem❤
Love this song. I saw them live in 1989 when they opened up for the Rolling Stones in Indianapolis on their Steel Wheels tour. My first concert. I'll never forget it!
I was at that show too!! The singer fell off the stage!
Saw them both on same tour but in Orlando
Saw them same year in Toronto Ontario, left half way through the stones as they appeared to be lip syncing
I saw them in Atlanta that year. Amazing!!
Wow!!! They set the bar HIGH!!!! ☮️❤️

Like the first half of the speaker is warning the listener, but after the solo the cult has taken over
For sure that solo has to be top 10 at the very least. Vernon Reid is one bad dude.
You a CM Punk fan?
Corey Glover is such a great rock vocalist. And Vernon Reid? An underrated shredder. Living Colour and the Cult were two criminally underrated bands of the 80's.
Vernon Reid is an amazing guitar player. I remember reading an interview with him in one of my guitar magazines like 25 or 30 years ago. I then bought his solo album "Mistaken Identity". This is a banger. Love every time I hear this
The "tights" are Bodyglove. The were hot at the time.
The world is catching up! Probably one of the more relevant songs in society today. The lead singer Corey Glover killed it in the movie Platoon as well.
Yes! He was in Platoon!
Living color is amazing! I remember in high school our history teacher played us this song and told us to listen to the lyrics. Only time I paid attention 😂
Saw them couple months ago. Sound better than ever
In college, when I had my last final in 1989, I came back to my apartment and rocked out to this (and other songs, but definitely this). Let Vernon Reid rip your face off. And those lyrics... this song just hits on all cylinders.
They STILL play and rock this song to this day.
Living Colour, Fishbone, and Xavion were the few black rock groups in the 80s
I was in love with Corey Taylor, the singer. OMG! I still love him.
He's also an actor, his most famous role was in "Platoon."
LOVE this song! Says a lot & still relevant as ever! You can tell it's 80's from the video, but the music is timeless! Vernon Reid shreds that guitar!
I had some of their records, I loved it, Vernon Ried the guitarist is unreal.
Black people invented rock and roll
Thanks for checking out this fantastic band and their amazing line-up.
Yeah man! These dudes f**king rock! Im a hard core metal head. And I play guitar. I'll tell you something, when I was a kid me and all my friends tried to learn the opening guitar riff. I saw them when they toured with the Stones back in the late 80s. Epic show! Subscribed! You are hilarious!
That mans was playing tha guitar like his freedom depended on it.
You really should try IceT’s group Bodycount. They are a black metal group and they are awesome.
I've always thought they deserved more than they got. They were a truly solid band. I loved this song (and many others) the first time I heard it. But if you want to go waaayy back...check out "A Band Called Death"
that is a great documentary. Death (punk band) rocked too bad they were so ahead of their time.
One of my fav songs of all time
CM PUNK IS BACK IN THE WWE!!!!!!! THIS THEME SONG OF HIS IS SUPER AWESOME!
This song is perfect for today and the way the world is behaving.
Prolific. We saw all of the coming

Band Bad Brains Album Black Dots :)
For serials , you didnt know this. How many people fit under one rock.
Back in 1988, they got pegged as a "Black Rock Band" and people moved on. I wish people treated gangster rap like they did Living Color back then, they'd be alot less teen blk shootings. Yes im black too.
I love watching the face of someone hearing Living Colour for the first time.
This song is definitely still applicable.
they were and still are on my play list
Instead of caring about clothes CARE ABOUT THE MESSAGE just saying 🙄
An excellent example of how we are ALL cursed w being human-the color of skin, religion, who you choose to love if you’re fortunate enough to find it, if you blindly follow a political ‘leader’…Talent is talent-just appreciate it. This is why I watch yes people like you. You're my age and cleawe grew up differently. Yet I embraced the ghetto life
Heavy Metal need no Colours to listen or play it , check up next = Body Count

Hadn’t seen the original video but this song is on my playlist and has been for a while now. The words have a lot of deep meaning.
This song is so relevant to this day this song's message was very clear and a lot of people still don't get it 😅
A Great Song
Pro tip: The band's name is always BEFORE the song name, unless the word "by" is used.
Great Band
They are actually touring again
Underrated band. They were awesome.
Seeing them in Chicago in Feb!!!
I was only 14 when i started listening to these guys.
Wait ‘til you hear “Love Rears Its Ugly Head”!!! You’ll be shook!
Another "black rock band" you might want to check out is Jimi Hendrix "Band of Gypsies" band, which had Jimi on guitar, Buddy Miles on drums, and Billy Cox on bass.
Living Color was spot on in their lyrics:

Check out Living Colour's "Elvis is Dead" & "Open Letter to a Landlord" as well.
Omg. Love you did this one. Love these guys. ❤️❤️❤️😎
Yeah, I only know of 2 all "black" rock bands off the top of my head. These guys & Fishbone. Sevendust's lead singer Lajon Witherspoon is black, & plenty of group's have black members of course, but for all members to be, seems to be a rarity. Although I'm sure there are more I'm just unaware of.😊
One of the best rock bands from the 80s. Another great rock band that you need to check out is Sevendust. They are more current.
Check out the song Sign of the Storm by The Eric Gales Band. It’s from 1991 but it still rocks today. I think that song will surprise you too
I lost it with the uncle gerald pause 😂😂😂
Body Count, vocalist Ice T. I believe is a all black band I'm 95 percent sure.
This song was about thinking for yourself and NOT falling for a Cult of Personality, (MAGA)
Check out Glamour Boys and Open Letter to a Landlord by this band. I love the band Thin Lizzy too , Phil is awesome
I hope this takes you down a rabbit hole of their music. Open Letter is a great second step ✌️
Hell yeah man... good vid
Vern Reid, Corey Glover, f’ing amazing band!
I can't believe you've never heard of Mother's Finest
Need to review the band Bad Brains. Major influence on living Colour
It was the 80s. We dressed differently
Corey Glover loved his Body Glove wetsuit
No No No, you need to hear a band called the "BAD BRAINS" Ras Tafarians from D.C. who are the only band that I know of to mix Reggae / Punk/Metal together this brilliantly.... May I suggest "I against I"
Nothing wrong with LC's song, but I am convinced that you will enjoy my suggestion.... JA!

It's clobberin time!!!!
Check out Fishbone. All black punk band.
It is not racist. There are too many white rock bands. I am white saying that. These guys are so amazing and so talented. Also, when it comes to great music like this, it doesn't matter what you look like.

*Vernon Reid 🎸
Fishbone
