I was a young black kid watching this video when it came out and then got into metal and guitar playing and experimenting with heavy rock and metal and still do to this day.
This was 89! They were ahead of their time and brilliant. Letter to A Landlord next! Corey Glover on vocals, the great Vernon Reid shredding that guitar!
Whenever people talk of guitar Gods Vernon Reid's name is never in the conversation. So sad......... Vernon Reid and this band are both criminally underrated.
@@joesgarage149 I always talk about him. A freggin pioneer, and a really cool guy in real life. If Reid is not top ten of guitarists then you are reading the wrong list.
They absolutely are! I have loved them since the first time I heard them. Now, at age 56, I will finally get to see them when they come to Cincy in September. Super stoked!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥
I CANNOT relay to people ENOUGH how much this song, and this band, changed my entire mind and made me the man I am today!!! I was a racist ass little dickwad until this band hit... and then I was FORCED to realize how fucked up I was. Living Color turned a HORRIBLE child into a DECENT man! And, even though it hurts to admit that I was a bad kid... I'll NEVER stop thanking this band for saving my mind, and changing my life!!! 💯💯💯😎
That is a very interesting comment and perspective…I’m genuinely interested in what happened with this tune that made you feel those feelings…???…would you feel comfortable sharing your experience?
He says: "Is the the best guitar solo we done heard so far?" as I laugh to myself knowing that the real, main, mind-melting guitar solo is still yet to come; just waiting to see how he reacts to that one. LOL
Not a big fan of this guitar solo, but the viewer who said the first lick was the solo had me laughing when he hasn't heard the actual solo. I was hoping to see his head explode
@GaryBaldy Very underrated you, and I both know it hell you barely hear about him. Not only is he underrated but the band is also well but you already know why
One of our first all black rock groups. which was an amazing break thru at the time. They werent how ever, the first black rockers. Such a great song with tons of meaning no matter what time period were in. Love the vocalist Corey Glover's and guitarist Vernon Reid's energy. Thanx so much, take care, Peace
Loved them back in the day when this came out. Got to see them again a couple years age in Ft Myers, Florida and while Corey Glover doesn't have all that hair any longer he still has that voice. 💯🔥🤙
This was the first rock song I fell in love with. Before that it was all hip hop and rap for me, but as soon as this song came on my television I was instantly hooked. Favorite band ever since.
The members of this band currently are guitarist Vernon Reid, lead vocalist Corey Glover, drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Doug Wimbish (who replaced Muzz Skillings in 1992). They are no longer as big as they used to be, but they're still out there and damn if they're not worth hunting down and listening to.
This song blew my mind. I remember watching it debut on MTV and i was speechless. Still rock out to this song 34 years later. Vernon Reid is a certified guitar god. The whole band just rocks!
Corey Glover was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He is an American actor known for his performance as Francis in Platoon (1986), and for his roles on The Keeper and Reunion. He is also known for being the lead singer and front man for the popular 80s Rock Band, Living Colour. 10-22-2024
A cult of personality, or a cult of the leader,[1] is the result of an effort which is made to create an idealized and heroic image of a leader by a government, often through unquestioning flattery and praise. Historically, it has developed through techniques of mass media, propaganda, spectacle, the arts, patriotism, and government-organized demonstrations and rallies.
Such a phenomenal and classic song!! Thank you for the reaction!! How good is this,! Check out a couple of other songs and you will be all out impressed! Vernon Reid is the guitar legend you asked about! Love that dudes work!
Vernon Reid on guitar..... One of my absolute riffmaster favorites back in the day... Up there with Akira Takasaki from Loudness. Listen to "This is the Life" by Living Colour....epic.
Dude... I've been watching reactors do this one this morning and why are so many people surprised that they're black? It's like man, truth and music transcends ALL boundaries.. Everyone loves in the same language.
Since you have arrived at the Living Colour train, I think the next one for you to check out should be "Funny Vibe". It's got much more funk in it, yet is still rocks hard, and it's from the same album as "Cult of Personality" (their first album).
Living Colour were not ahead of their time. They were RIGHT ON TIME. Bands like Bad Brains and Fishbone had already paved the way. It's just that not enough people were paying attention.
You betcha "Bro can actually sing"! Corey Glover was my favorite Judas in the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar." And sadly, the lyrics are just as appropriate today.
5:39 (cackles)... love the expression... Vernon and how he VIOLATES the guitar, like that... and ya KNOW the guitar is all "Call me..? ...... Please...?" after it's done (hah)
Some good songs by Living Colour to follow up with: Type, Leave it Alone, This is the Life (2020 version ), Glamour Boys, Love Rears It’s Ugly Head, Wall, Flying, Auslander.
This song came out in 1988. If you are familiar with current rock at the time, these guys were vastly different. To me ahead of their time. Good song pick.
The entire album is a masterpiece. They opened for the Rolling Stones during the Steel Wheels tour in 1990. I *LOVE* the Stones. I bought that ticket, however, to see Living Color. Important, transformative music. Y'all youngsters who missed out on life, pre-internet... I feel genuine pity for y'all. No lie. I truly do.
I saw them in Atlanta in 1989/1990, when I was in college there. You see the clip of nearly ALL WHITE KIDS at their show? Truth. They were an AMAZING band.
I would recommend “Open Letter To A Landlord” from the same release Also (Side note) Cory Glover, the vocalist, made an appearance in Oscar winning movie “Platoon”
"Cult of Personality" refers to the manipulation tactics that political, religious, and social leaders use to gain the trust and support of the masses, and maintain control of a population. It's about how easily we as a society give away our power to those we see as "charismatic" or "influential"
I believe it's Vernon Reid on guitar. I was 13 when my dad bought me this tape for my walkman and I still love it! Came out in 89? I think? Album is called Vivid.
They are still touring! The guitarist is buds with the guitarist of Rage Against the Machine, whose an awesome black guitarist as well. This is from 88. The guitarist nickname is 'burnin Vernon'.
@gandalf8216 My bad. He looked dark to me in the photo I saw. I don't listen to much Rage. Obviously, his Irish isn't dominant cause us Irish are as pale as all get out. But I can see how Italion would make him a tad dark. Either way, both are great guitarists.
Drums kicked A$$. Guitars kicked A$$. Lead singer kicked serious A$$. Lyrics- next level. head banging while speaking truth to power. Lyrics mean as much today as they did then, maybe more. Politicians making sure no one is happy, while making a lot of money themselves, and taking us from one war right into the next. I was around in the 80s when rock/metal was kind of in a hole, then GnR and Living Colour came out. Someone needs to explain to me why Living Colour wasn't a lot bigger for a lot longer. I don't get it.
Rock is for everyone, no exceptions. One of my favorite bands right now is BabyMetal, check out Road of Resistance, live in Japan. If you were surprised by a black rock band I can’t wait until you see this.
Phenomenal song and they speak the truth, perhaps it was for that reason they never made it big. This song was actually in the playlist for GTA san andreas so that's how I first heard it
"ok it's black dudes doing rock" Morgan Freeman voice over "Little did he know that many music historians believe"black dudes" were instrumental in rock existing"
As a white dude, gotta say.. just LOVE when black dudes hear it's hard rock, love the first few seconds, then SEE them, and say "Holy shit, they're BLACK..." heehee... (much like in the 80's, how people had heard, but not seen, Madonna.. and when they DID.. they were "Holy shit.. bish is WHITE!!" :)
I had to have the Vernon Reid tone…….I didn’t want it, I NEEDED it! Got it with a Steinberger with an onboard jackson je1200 mid boost. Ran it through my 2 jcm800s set up geddy lee style…in stereo. Marshall A/b preamp, Dod superdistortion, electroharmonix big muff sounded great as well, a little chorus and pog at noon. Slight flange…..you’ll be close……….oh yeah,, your Marshall’s must be capable of going to “11” on the gain.
“You gave me fortune, you gave me fame, you gave me power in your gods name. I’m every person, you need to be…”. Tell me who that sounds like? Maybe a certain president that dooped everyone into awful business ventures that made him millions, maybe the president that has fooled people into thinking of him as the second coming, that they worship him, giving him power in their gods name. This song was decades ahead of its time.
I'm old enough to remember when this hit MTV. Vernon Reid is amazing on guitar.
I’m that old too!
Doug Wimbish on the bass. Such an underrated bassist. Dude rips. Doesn't matter if he's white, black, purple or green. Race don't matter
I went out bought the first magazine I could find to learn more about the band!
When MTV actually played music videos!
@@bvallejo91thays Muzz Skillings on bass. Hes the original bassist

LOVED Living Colour (still do) such great musicianship. Corey Glover awesome vocalist and Vernon Reid....just an awesome guitarist.
Criminally underrated band
Agree
I was going to post that same comment. You beat me by 11 months.
They absolutely are! I have loved them since the first time I heard them. Now, at age 56, I will finally get to see them when they come to Cincy in September. Super stoked!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🔥
Yep i love their first album
One of the most relevant and meaningful songs in the last 30 years.
It's even more relevant now. It's incredible how well this fits into today's society. It's powerful and so meaningful.
I CANNOT relay to people ENOUGH how much this song, and this band, changed my entire mind and made me the man I am today!!!

Loved this song when it came out and it's still awesome...and even more relevant today!
Black dudes doing rock 🤣…there are more than you think and they absolutely crush it.
Absofreakinlutely!
The guitarists name is Vernon Reid. Very talented man and underrated guitarist and should've had way more exposure
NOT underrated - very respected in the guitar community
@GaryBaldy Very underrated you, and I both know it hell you barely hear about him. Not only is he underrated but the band is also well but you already know why
Vernon Reid making that guitar scream!! 🔥
Corey Glover on vocals, damn I love this song and group, wish they'd have done more, but we had them!! 🔥🤩👊🏽
They play Riot Fest in Chicago often
They are currently still touring. Their last full album was in 2017. Are you saying they suddenly went away? We still have them.
Cult of personality is a term from sociology. The lead singer Corey Glover has a tremendous voice.
This song was HUGE! They played it on every radio station, commercial, sporting event. I love it.

ONE Of The COOLEST HARD ROCK BANDS EVER, BEEN LISTENING TO The THEM FOR YEARS NOW, They ARE SO CURRENT EVENTS NOW, They NEVER GET OLD!!!

Right there with you. This song never gets old.
"Love rears up its ugly head" is a must listen to and watch the official video of theirs 👂👀

I was a high school senior when this song came out. Corey Glover's voice is powerful and Vernon Reid is an underrated guitarist!
I was in high school and discovered this on MTVs Headbanger’s Ball - one of the greatest songs ever
These guys rocked in ‘89 and they still rock now.
GREAT choice. Some people take forever to get around to this one. So classic. So freaking good.
This song is so much relevant today . They rocked out. I remember when it first come out. It was so bad ass

Vernon read killing it on guitar. He’s so good.
These guys were awesome.
I saw Living Color perform at Columbia University, 1985, small room, Halloween, AWESOME!!

Saw them open for the Rolling Stones in 89, great show, as for the Rolling Stones I left around half way through, great reaction
Ole Vernon will get your heart pumping for sure!
I am so fcukin jealous of u right now, hearing this for the first time. LC are absolutely superb musicians, brilliant songwriters and top guys. 🤘
Watch them on the Arsenio Hall show back in the day. The crowd was not ready for the funk they brought!

Its wild that people are surprised its a black band when rock and roll has its origins in jazz and RnB.
One of those songs that not only never gets old, but gets better with age. It STILL sounds groundbreaking.

This was club music when I was doing that whole thang.
Looking forward to seeing them in NH, Aug. 3rd! Great reaction!
Great rock bank! They broke when I graduated high school.. they still do gigs! Make ‘‘em go viral!
Been loving this band for many years ❤❤ even saw the live recently ❤ you should listen to their song "Someone like you" 😊
