I'm on yr 3 of my fitness journey which I started at age 40 during the pandemic, and Layne was one of my informational pillars. I am now in the best shape of my life, and it really does feel like the death of a previous version of myself and the birth of someone new, like a second shot at life. So happy you invited Layne to the podcast. His diet/nutrition videos are the best!

So true, I got sick and tired of being overweight and smoking cigarettes. Woke up one day and said to myself, "This is the day and still going on strong."
I was the strongest of my life in 2020. Going to the gym 3/4 times a week, eating very well, going to yoga, but then I became seriously ill and I’m only just getting myself back to the gym 4 years later. I’ve had to start from “just get yourself out of bed”, now I’m lifting only 5kg on some equipment and people go on after me and must think wow she’s weak, but I know where I’m coming from and I know where I’m going to be in a year so I don’t care what other people think. You’re doing this for you, no one else!
They don't think that, they're too busy thinking about their own weights to be concerned about yours. But also, you could be doing rehabilitating, practicing form, doing mega low weights and tons of reps, working on your tendons and not your muscles. Loads of reasons for low weights instead of large ones. Just keep doing you, you're doing great.

### Key Takeaways from Layne Norton's Insights on Health, Diet, and Fitness 1. **Calorie Mismanagement:** People often underestimate their calorie intake due to inaccurate portion sizes, affecting their weight management efforts. 2. **Artificial Sweeteners and Weight Loss:** Diet Coke and similar products can help in weight loss by replacing higher-calorie drinks, though not as beneficial as water. The belief in sugar addiction is supported by Norton, despite it being a controversial topic. 3. **Intermittent Fasting:** It can lead to weight loss not because of any special properties but because it helps some people naturally reduce calorie intake. 4. **Impact of Layne Norton:** Norton is praised for debunking myths in fitness and nutrition, promoting evidence-based approaches. 5. **Overcoming Food Addiction:** Strategies include increasing mindfulness and creating barriers to prevent autopilot eating behaviors. 6. **Motivation and Discipline:** Success in weight management relies more on discipline and long-term habit formation than temporary motivation. 7. **Small Steps in Goal Setting:** Starting with small, manageable goals is more effective for confidence building and long-term success than ambitious ones that may lead to failure and discouragement. 8. **Calories In/Calories Out:** Understanding the balance between energy intake and expenditure is crucial for weight management. Protein has a higher thermic effect, making it more metabolically costly to digest. 9. **Exercise and Weight Loss:** Exercise contributes to weight management not just by burning calories but also by regulating appetite and improving psychological well-being. 10. **Impact of Diet Choices:** Norton argues that no diet is superior for long-term weight loss; adherence and consistency are the key factors. 11. **Artificial Sweeteners:** They can be a tool for weight loss without negatively impacting insulin levels, contrary to common beliefs. Their long-term effects on the gut microbiome and health are still under research. 12. **Resistance Training:** Offers extensive benefits beyond muscle growth, including improved bone density, reduced risk of chronic diseases, and better overall health. 13. **The Role of Failure:** Norton emphasizes the importance of embracing failures as learning opportunities and stepping stones to success. 14. **Critique of the Fitness Industry:** Norton critiques the lack of scientific literacy and the focus on aesthetics over health in the fitness industry. 15. **Supplementation:** Recommends basic supplements like creatine monohydrate and whey protein for their proven benefits in performance and nutrition. 16. **Personal Journey and Motivation:** Norton shares his personal experiences with bullying, PTSD, and his journey into fitness as drivers for his mission to help others and make fitness information accessible.
So glad Layne is getting this exposure. The man is a total treasure and a badly needed voice to counter the misinformation so rife in the world of fitness and nutrition. Hoping this gets him even more subscribers.
Consistent trauma sustained over a long period of time creates a combination of PTSD & CPTSD. You can heal from it, reduce the intensity, recognise when you are triggered and can calm down enough to be able to respond over reacting to triggering situations. I am soooo with you on the "I am not worthy, I am not good enough." Thankyou for being so open, honest & vulnerable 🙏💟
The last part really moved me to the core. Layne is one of the most beautiful people I've ever heard speak. The fact that he's so full of questions (innate curiosity which coincides with humility) and gratitude is such an inspiration for the kind of person I want to be. To, despite the complexity and pain of a relationship with someone who no doubt survived a lot of trauma, only want to ask questions and say thank you, is so gorgeous it almost shocks me, so unused as I am to seeing such humanity in someone.
Visualization works well for me..If I am off track and suffering from the consequences, I visualize myself in a state of achieved goals and am able to return to the lifestyle that works best for my mental and physical successes.
THANK YOU for having Layne on the podcast! I'm a registered dietitian, and I am thankful that people like Layne are out here with solid science. Some guests on DOAC have been rather frustrating for me to listen to because of their, erm, less-than-well-founded health claims.
I never can sit through a long podcast, but this was mesmerizing. Layne Norton you gave me so much motivation with my job as physical therapist assistant in an outpatient orthopedic clinic. At 65, I still love my job of helping people.
I did not study near as in depth as Dr Layne but he’s one of my go to podcasts when I want to listen to something relevant to health and science. I did my health coaching certification and personal training but I have a ton of respect for him! So glad he’s been platformed in this way. Most people who listen to him religiously are already interested in health.
Wow- this interview was a goldmine of information, and then the last guest question turned things up to level 11. It was moving to see the candor and integrity. Thanks for raising the bar on this episode!

He has no idea about fasting, that's all I listened to so could be more.. I'm on hour 93 of fasting with some light training and I've gotten shredded as well as losing an abscess I had.
@benmorgan681 congrats on your weight loss and health improvement. I did IF and extended day fasts for many years. Initially I got good results but long term I started to lose muscle mass probably because I was not taking enough protein. Also because of the extended days fasting like 72h or 5 day fasts.
@@AmirKhan-lp1tl appreciate it man! After my 5 day fast I don't believe I lost muscle and I think it's because I continued to work out. I definitely lost a bit of strength but I was ripped day 5 so that's why I don't think I lost any or much but I should try to measure it one day. I'm tempted to try the one day eat and one day off fasting approach with 3-5 days every few weeks.

Nice to see someone on here discussing diet that actually talks about using and applying the scientific method and backing up his claims with research. Calories do count, how we count them also counts. You really have upped the bar, great work Steven!

Thank-you Layne for being so honest. What a wonderful witness you are for your profession, your passion and to everyone around you. I am 60. I am thankful for the pain. It shows me what I need to work on. After my older son was killed by a negligent driver two years ago, I let myself go. My excuse was grief. This went on until my daughter came home and read me the riot act. She has a nice loud on pitch voice. Our whole small town knew she was pissed at me and why. That did not have any immediate impact, however it did propel me to start taking care of myself. Your decency and honesty for a body builder man at your age is remarkable and much appreciated. You are making a difference for many more people than you could imagine.
I lost my son 2 years ago. Isolated and grieved for a year. Sudden events pushed into action and I was emotionally prepared. I got back into fitness in response and now do 3 fitness practices a day. It changed my attitude, healed the loss by being outside passing others daily with open heart and at gym made different communities of friends as I practiced my different workouts. I gained needed muscle and am now very fit at 70 and it defies many myths about loss and aging too. The 3 different practices produce 3 mindfulness results that make it fun.
I am 70 years old now, at 30 I had back pain. My doctor prescribed pain killers after the X-ray exposed degenerative disc disease. I didn’t want to treat the symptom nor begin a life of dependency on pain killers. Went to a chiropractor, improved my posture, began lifting weights, stayed active, incorporated yoga stretches daily and for the last 40 years have remained pain and drug free. Yet every time I have a bone density test or X-ray I get a desperate call supposedly informing me of disc problems and I answer “I know, but I have no pain and am living a normal active life.” Thanks
Thank-you for telling your story. I have/had the same diagnosis, lived for a few years on pain meds everyday of my life, left my job as a firefighter. Two years ago, I changed my diet, lost 15 kilos. I'm off Meds, pain free and happy😊
What a great episode!!!! ❤ As I'm on a weight loss journey myself,( 90lbs down 40 to go) it was really great timing for me to hear this. Of course got me crying at the end.
Honestly, this was the best podcast episode I've seen so far. Just personally dealing with bullying and the weight topic has been a struggle. I've managed to lose 100 lbs but after 3 years of this weight struggle, its hard to come out of that diet mind set and I feel stuck. I appreciate discussions like this because it helps to see I'm not alone. I understand people's concerns but its also a mental battle... its one thing for me to acknowledge it and another to change the habits.
The only way to maintain to to find foods you enjoy that are within your calorie maintenance. You can’t ever go back to how you use to eat. You need to find a new balance that’s sustainable for you. It’s a daily choice. Do you want to eat whatever or do you want to be healthy? Why do you want to be healthy? What happens if go back to where you came from? Is that what you want? (-154lbs over 10 years ago and maintaining in healthy weight range).
Hey layne, thank you for doing your work. I am one of the people that your actions and words have positively influenced. I dont think that I am the only one. Your opinion is valued and it matters Layne, thank you. Also the way you talked about your parents made me tear up, I feel much the same in a lot of ways. Thank you. Love and Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Layne will probably never read this and will never know that I’ve followed him and his advice for years. He’s had a positive impact on my life and I’m grateful for his contribution and man I felt every emotion with him at the end there. You’re a top human ❤
I love this message, that I have said for years. One size does not fit all> All diets and eating plans work, and the individuals respond differently. The object is to be the healthy(in every way) and happy. Thank you for this.
I absolutely LOVE listening to any videos where Dr. Layne Noton is speaking. I found him about a year ago and I've learned so much from him and look forward to his newest postings. I've gone back ~10+years and have listened to them ALL! He makes clear, logical sense and he helps quiet down the "noise" (debunking all the misinformation & cherry-pickers). 👍 🇨🇦
What a great guy. If only every guest could be so honest and genuine and at the same time qualified to speak about the matter. No bs podcast for sure 👏🏻
I’ve watched your channel for awhile now and I have seen you have grown not only as a person but the channel has grown and I applaud you and your team that you have behind you!! So thank you for giving people like me topics they are wanting to know about! Cheers🍻 keep being real 💗
Steven, your content is absolutely mindboggling. You have this intuitive wisdom where you always ask the right questions, its like the world is listening and thinking "yeah I want to know this" thank you for having all these amazing people on !!!
Layne just keeps getting more real to me with every video he gives us. Thanks for coming onto this show and debunking a bunch of nonsense that has previously been aired on this show.
I can relate to this podcast. I love that Steven pulls so much more out of his guests than any other interviewer. I'm so impressed with the natural talent he possesses to bring the real person to the table. Just wow!
I have been waiting to see layne norton on your channel for the past 2 years, THIS GUY HAS LEGIT KNOWLEDGE of nutrition, amazing episode, my favourite by far
Wow, I'm extremely impressed by Layne - his intellectual rigour, his discipline, his willingness to be vulnerable and to admit fault, his compassion and the nuance he brings to everything he says. Thank you for being who you are! ❤
Best Layne Norton Ever. He shared his heart on his sleeeve and it’s great to have people see that. He has developed into a better leader year after year.
Thank you Layne for your knowledge, honesty and openness and mostly for your willingness to be vulnerable. I think so many people of our generation are not capable of showing that. It is so appreciated. And thank you Steven for your great questions, experience, and for facilitating a great conversation 💚
Layne, you are truly an inspiration. You were a huge contributor to my life changing back in 2014 and I’ve been following your journey ever since! Thank you for all you do!
Dr. LAYNE you are an incredible person! Thank you for being honest and vulnerable! Steven, thank you for being such a great interviewer, who listens, doesn not interrupts, asks clarifying questions and let the guest talk. Such a calm, confident, honest and intelligent conversation. Blown away. Thank you!!
I became a subscriber after this interview, and I've watched a few prior. So many fitness/nutrition experts out there, it becomes really difficult to discern fact from fluff. I felt Steven's DOAC platform provided Dr. Norton a safe place to really be genuine and impactful in this interview. Loved it, respect to both men. Keep em coming!
Gosh... watched this all the way... Love it so much. Thank you Layne. Thank you Steve. I just lost my Dad this past month, old age. He was 85 going on 86. I can totally relate. Didn't know about the end stages of life until I started taking care of my Dad when he was bed ridden and even before then. Unfortunately for our U.S. Territory we do not have Hospice, so I had to educate myself with youtube. This was so amazing. Thank you again for sharing.
I've been following Layne on IG for years. He's such a cool dude because of the way he can nerd out on science, lift cars and rocketships for fun, and show his softer emotional side as well. This episode was all of that. To date, truly one of the best podcasts I've ever watched/listened to. Thanks for the vulnerability and truths and understanding and reality checks. I'm here for ALL of it.
Layne was my earliest influence on my outlook to nutrition, as far back as 2015. I’m so glad he was! I am very happy to see him rightfully get the fame he deserves for consistently putting out the most balanced, truthful content on nutrition out there. 👏🏻
When I lost a lot of weight (200 lb), all I would hear from friends, coworkers, etc., were things like “you’re getting too skinny”, “this isn’t healthy”, “I think you are anorrexic”, and doing things like giving me gifts of candy, leaving a donut on my desk, etc. But when I was with people who never knew me as fat, they just accepted me as I am. You have to be willing to move on from your fat life and sometimes it means getting new friends or even getting a new job.
Finally someone on this podcast in the health and fitness industry that has a brain and can actually read and understand the studies on all of these things.
34:26 My dad is my hero and my son is my fuel, feels so good to be listening to this particular part as I'm pulling over at my Dad's to pick up my boy from hanging out at his grandparents all day, this makes me thank God and even with all the huge pile of troubles I have in my life right now I really feel these are the best days of my life sin both of them are with me.
I found Layne a couple years ago; his excellence in Fitness & Nutrition BS Killing was so encouraging and vindicating for me as an Exercise Physiologist. This Pod Cast with Layne gave me so much joy and inspiration as I think of how I want my kids to remember me to! Layne Norton, greatness today!
Layne Norton and Jeff Nippard are literally the only two fitness scientists you actually need. They have been a massive, massive support in my fitness journey and I am really grateful for the two of them for the work they do.
Fantastic episode. Layne is a hero to me, and many of the people I train with. A no bullshit influencer with all the credibility who is doing a magnificent job of the one thing he mentioned in the podcast - doing something you love and adding value to the world. Thank you Layne, and thank you Steven for finally bringing him on!
Man, i cried also at the end, as i also lost my dad 3 years ago, getting emotional just seeing someone else going through the same thing i did. Bravo Layne and Bravo DOAC for being such a great interviewer, you always bring the best and truth from people!
This was SO uplifting to listen to! Huge respect to Layne for being strong and vulnerable! Trauma is the elephant in the room especially in this day and age, the fitness industry included. Mental health should really get more attention, especially for men who fear to appear weak by opening up.
The knowledge of psychology held me here. Came from TikTok. Impressed with how he combined nutrition with psychology. Not just bc “it sounds right”. The psychology is spot on.
You are an amazing human being Steven Bartlett keep up the good work! Subsequent to watching your podcasts, I’ve implemented daily intermittent fasting and have lost weight which I had struggled to lose for ages, thank you!❤
Yes, I am sick and tired of my job so I quitted and spend a year of finding my purposes in my personal life again and I am glad I did that. Now, I am recharged with a better view of the next level to go for in my life. I eat timely, healthier food with better nutrient values, workout 3-4 times a week , reads, watch meaningful videos, do research on Calories 😂 and I am so much happier now 😊
This is the first serious nutrition expert I've seen on here. Very pleased! This guy knows his stuff. So many 'doctors' out there trained in totally different areas pretending like they know about diet.
My grandfather is 92, diet coke, ham egg and chips, mars bars & sherbet dip dabs were his jam! (Hes slowed down on it now..!) And hes not fat! Im impressed with this podcast
I’m so glad Layne’s getting more international recognition now!! Love how he always cuts through all the noise and BS going around the nutrition and fitness. I’ve had to do so much unlearning when it comes to nutrition but that wouldn’t have been possible without Layne’s videos 🥹
This is the first podcast of yours that I've watched. I usually see the reels on Instagram and have never come here to listen. But I'm glad that I did because it was so insightful and I learned so much from it. Thank you!
So true, my therapist said that when I really want sweet food (cake, chocolate) it’s like I am trying to treat myself and give good feeling because there is something stuck in my memory that is dragging along. Sweet food instantly gives good feeling to whatever triggered it down in the root. Now I am trying to work on this. Hoping one day will stop eating cake to make me feel good. ❤
Wow A massive thank you to Dr Layne Norton. I have been driving myself nuts cycling round various diets etc I followed Tim Spector’s advice and gained 3 lbs by not focussing on calories. I’ve gained a pound this week by doing the 16:8 and not calorie counting. Previously I lost 6.5 stones by calorie counting and 80:20 wholefood / ultra processed and processed food and stopping eating after 7pm. Just basic strategies that worked. I’m going back to that and I’m not listening to anybody else ever again. Dr Norton. I can’t thank you enough ❤
@@haggisman0812 Quality of food is more important than counting every calorie. For example, eating 1500 calories of chicken breast with bell peppers at home is much more beneficial to weight loss than eating 1500 calories of mcdonalds, mainly bcz the chicken breast isn't triggering a massive insulin spike... A chinese doctor on this very podcast talks about this extensively.
I freaking love this podcast so much. I just love it. No matter who is on it. But this particular interview was extremely useful and informative. Love it .
My first time listening to a Diary of a CEO podcast. Amazing info in this episode but I also want to say how impressed I was with the host. You allowed your guest to speak without interrupting him or rapid firing questions that veer the guest off topic, only interjecting with thoughtful comments and questions!! Well done!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I'm grateful for Dr. Norton for giving excellent no bull explanations of research on diet and exercise (helped me lose 70 lbs post partum and almost no lean mass lost due to resistance training). This Podcast helped me appreciate him even more as a human. If you see this, thank you for persevering and being so generous with education.
So because he says he started lifting weights because he was bullied as a kid and thought girls would like him, you think this will be a good science based podcast?
@@jordanpostle8641 No that's not why. It'll be a good science based podcast because he always follows the real data unlike most others on this podcast (at least the ones who talked about nutrition).
Thanks for featuring Dr Layne Norton. I discovered him and his studies on reverse dieting after suffering from ED for years and learned to fix my eating as well as eating more. He really helped me fix my relationship with food
This was so pivotal for me to here this today, at the place I am at on my journey, with the sacrifices I have made for my child, the appreciation I have had for her birth, and the realization I needed of my WHY. Thank you for this.
Great! I recently lost a bit more than that. I guess this is an anti-testimonial. I did not eliminate carbs, fat, vegetables, or anything else other than candy bars, salty snacks, and sugary drinks. I reduced saturated fat. No time restricted eating. I did (and do) spent 30 minutes on a stationary bike daily before breakfast. I did start eating more beans, lentils, and crunchy vegetables. Along the way (actually, before I lost the weight) my blood pressure dropped 20 points. My HDL-C dropped as well.
I have listened to many of your interviews and I just have to say you Sir are what I would refer to as an Interview polymath. The questions you ask are spot on!
Got to say: Of all those people, doctors, professors, experts, gurus etc etc. This guys take on the topics seems to just make so much sense. Seems super straight up about it too. While with many others there is this unshakable feeling of a double marketing agenda.... Thanks for the interview!
I think the reason so many tune into you, is because you are such an awesome interviewer. You have great guests and you always take them to somewhere they weren’t expecting to go. Plus I love the sound of your voice . ❤
I've been reading his comments and following him and was hopeful for him throughout his many years of learning by experience, and not just his throwing around "I am a DR" so I know more than your coaches do. I'm glad he stopped being a reactive online bully. Maybe he learned from the former coaches who had hundreds of profrssional pros before he did and they did it with humility. Never knew he had ADHD. This explains his past aggressive behaviors. Sometimes bullies become bullies. Happy to see he may have found self awareness. Experience in this industry provides a lot of education and it seems like he's finally figured out how to speak without losing his temper.
This was amazing. I lost 45 pounds and then was diagnosed with diabetes, got on ozempic (lower doses) and managed the diabetes and lost 40 more pounds. I have about 20 left to reach goal weight. Exercise to keep or gain lean tissue is necessary not for just weight loss but cleaning the blood. You have to make changes incrementally and make them my new life choices. When people ask what diet did i use. I say its not a diet.
I woke up to this video in the middle of the night (bad sleep issues). I teared up twice. The demeanor and vibe was a delight! I will watch this in chunks due to my attention. Kudos to both host and guest!
If you like this episode please can you do me a little favour and hit the like button on the video! I really appreciate your kindness x ❤👊🏾

I am soooo with you on the "I am not worthy, I am not good enough."
Thankyou for being so open, honest & vulnerable 🙏💟
The last part really moved me to the core. Layne is one of the most beautiful people I've ever heard speak. The fact that he's so full of questions (innate curiosity which coincides with humility) and gratitude is such an inspiration for the kind of person I want to be. To, despite the complexity and pain of a relationship with someone who no doubt survived a lot of trauma, only want to ask questions and say thank you, is so gorgeous it almost shocks me, so unused as I am to seeing such humanity in someone.

I am a huge admirer of Layne Norton. He advanced a lot the knowledge in fitness and nutrition for average people, as he says, but way beyond that.

Finally a real expert on nutrition science and not all the frauds, gurus, grifters selling diet books and products that you had in the past. You have now earned my subscribe.
lol 'real expert'... this is the guy who peddled worthless supplements like bccas for years.
@@benmrgamw681 In the long run, all you are doing is harming yourself. The initial results of such long fasting are shortterm only.
I owe Layne Norton so much. It's difficult to express the gratitude I feel towards him. I don't have siblings, but I feel like he is a brother. 💙

This guy is the best. So many people talk so much nonsense for views. Layne doesnt. Epic appreciation!

I absolutely LOVE listening to any videos where Dr. Layne Noton is speaking. I found him about a year ago and I've learned so much from him and look forward to his newest postings. I love this guy! Thanks for going out and confronting past trauma and turning it into a way to help others.
I've been following Layne for close to 20 years and i'm still so surprised how much I learn from him with Life, diet, and mindset.
Was liking it before I watched the full episode just cause the guy cried and I think more ppl should show strength through showing emotions 💪❤️
