Reading my mind. Same thing happening on my 50’ hot rod. 350 crate , 600 Edelbrock. Checking battery age and cables tomorrow! Thanks Ryan! Great channel. 👊

thanks and good luck, check all the battery connection points if nothing is obvious.... especially if you have the build your own cable ends, the ones that hold the cable to the terminal end with a clamp and two bolts... those things are terrible and hav e gotten me a few times ... and that sounds like a cool car man

I like your lunch pan idea, I like to have a muffin pan for the same reason. It'll give ya more places to sort stuff. The tray under everything {the carb}, thats a nice touch.

thats a good idea. i ll be adding a muffin tray to the things to steal from the house and not get caught with in the garage list

I saw a guy posted on a forum how to time with no marks. It had to do with the diameter of the balancer and 360° maybe u can find sumthin on it but sounds good since tightening the terminals. Sounds good starting now. Great video 👍👍

the logic of that method makes sense... for me the trick is seeing when the piston is exactly at the top. My method used the welding rod to see when it stopped getting pushed out and got pinched... so i am calling the thickness of the rod 1-2 degrees and thats a guess.
i suppose what you would need for the other method if you got the circumference and decided it by 360 that would get you marks...thinking that way.. so an 8" balancer would show one degree of timing every... .069 inches... so a little over an 1/16" and a little less than 5/64... so at least that confirms my 1-2 degrees based on the welding rod.
so the issue I have is, outside of lining up the timing marks on the timing gears, or replacing the balancer with one correct for the crank keyway(which would not be that bad i suppose) all the other methods leave a few degrees to judgement... when are the valves first fully closed, when is the piston it the exact top of its stroke... ya know all of the other ways that require observation.... so instead... i give myself that margin of error

i thought the same thing when i was editing lol... it was the timing light sitting on the radiator...

I thought the same thing when I edited it. It’s the timing light resting on the radiator. Good eye though

I wonder if that starter needs a small shim in one side to stop that clink on start up ?

not a bad thought but when i put it in i did the paperclip clearance test and all... i think, after this video, it was the sound of the spring in the starter popping due to the loose battery connections

Hang in there, the day will come when the murder van will run, drive and stop perfectly without rear end noises. You’ll be able to put the dog house back on and forget the engine is even there! 🍀

yea man... all part of the process, it ll be a full blown daily in no time.... but really though... it has not stranded me, its preformed well enough in traffic, and I only have had the dog house off 3 times since I put the motor in.... I only add that bit not for my ego, but to encourage people to make daily drivers out of these things because when it is condensed on the channel it seems like its endless trouble.

Yeah, batt. cables can get you when you least expect it. FYI: Some hei ignition modules have a retard circuit which you can hook up to the starter soleniod in order to retard timing a few degrees during crank.

yea man, got me on the truck the other day too... went to start... nothing... no click, no headlights nothing... and i, like an idiot searched for fuesable links, melted wires, blown fuses for an hour before i just wiggled the battery cables...
but thats interesting about the hei. i did not know that
