Creating Bonsai from raw nursery stock - Crab Apple

  • Hi everyone!
    This week we are starting Crab Apple "Tina"''s life as a Bonsai. I found the cool little tree in the reduced area at a garden centre, and now is the time to do some BIG work on it. Creating Bonsai from raw nursery stock has lots of advantages, but you can end up with lots of issues if you get seduced without really looking at the material before you buy it. Luckily I knew what I was letting myself in for...sort of, but wish us luck, it's going to get serious!
    Enjoy!
    Love
    Rebecca xx

    Great work Rebecca! You just made all the exact same decisions as I would have - right root plane, right new leader, good chops! 🍻👍🏻

    I just purchased a 10 foot Crabapple for $10🥰 AMAZING nebari!! I want to trunk chop her SO BAD!!!!! Should I wait until Spring?

    • @PumpkinBecki
      @PumpkinBecki  2 роки тому

      Hi Angela, yes Spring would be ideal. Your tree will be pulling all the nutrients into its vascular system right now (Autumn is vascular growth time, so trunks and limbs will be doing all their thickening). If you trunk chop now, the starches and sugars will be lost and may actually make the tree less resilient over winter. If you chop in Spring, the sugars and starches will be released into a way smaller system and the tree will burst with energy 😊 Be brave, sit on your hands if you have to, and let your amazing bargain store its hard earned energy xx

    Hello Rebecca. Be bold your trees will become beautiful. I have done many chops like that at the right time of the year. Keep on practicing and don't be afraid you cant go wrong when you spend 10 quid on a tree.

      Hi there, thank you so much :) I really appreciate you taking the time to comment xx I think you're absolutely right, practice is the key. When I bought my first trees with pocket money in the mid-80's I was far too afraid to do anything with them, and that's probably the biggest mistake I could have made, because I learnt very little. Now I'm spending my own money I feel braver, make bigger decisions and am learning so much! xx

    New Bonsai Person question....could you have taken the big roots that were on the surface and replant them to grow a new plant?

    • @PumpkinBecki
      @PumpkinBecki  Рік тому +1

      Hi Rey, thank you for taking the time to comment xx Some viewers did suggest I could have taken root cuttings from this tree. It's not something I've ever tried, but any way to increase your tree stock is worth a try isn't it 😊xx

    Hi Becki!
    What a bargain for 10 pounds. You did not go too far. I think I would even have removed all branches cause they are way to thick in relation to the trunk. With deciduous trees always make the severe steps in the beginning, when you have invested nothing yet. It's always worth it to get the basic structre as best a you can so you won't get upset and regret it for not taking these steps. These double layer roots are common for nursery stock and yes, most of the time you get inverserse taper bychoosing the lower one. I always take advantage to make two trees out of it. Often it works. Maybe you take the rootcutting and try it, too. Tell us if it works out!. And by the way. You really should get a proper saw or bigger loppers. Hahaha!

    • @PumpkinBecki
      @PumpkinBecki  3 роки тому +1

      Oooh, that's interesting Basti, maybe I should have gone further on those branches. They are very thick. I think I was worried that I was going to over stress the tree having done all that root work. Maybe I'll take a second look :)
      Yeah, I'm ashamed of the saw on my multitool :D I nearly edited it out and then thought, "No, warts and all!" :D

    Hi Becki, great work. I was wondering why you didn't save the roots that were prunned? I saw a few good thick roots that had a good amount of feeders, they would have made beautiful trees.

      Yes, I did consider it Harrison, but I'm seriously running out of space 😆 I already have several 3-4 year old Crab Apples I'm working on, and another 10-15 which are 2 years old...sometimes I have to rein myself back in 😏xx

    Was concerned that paste to protect the cuts was not used

    • @PumpkinBecki
      @PumpkinBecki  3 роки тому

      I could have used cut paste on them Jo, but decided against it at the time. I've left good distances between the cuts and the shoulders of the limbs, except on the high roots I removed, so hopefully any dieback will happen there and be encapsulated. If I'd cut hard back to the trunk I would definitely used paste :) xx

      It's already popping beautiful red buds everywhere 😊 I did consider propagating the roots, but a) I have no idea what rootstock "Tina" was grafted onto and b) I'm seriously running out of space 😆 I already have several 3-4 year old Crab Apples I'm working on, and another 10-15 which are 2 years old...sometimes I have to rein myself back in 😏xx
