Completely agreed with you. Making a good choice in a garden shop you can get really good trees.... almost all I have comes from garden centers.... Thanks for such a good tips.
Awesome video as always Jelle! You really know maples well! Yes, I am bonsai friends with Dave from @Blue Sky Bonsai. I am very fortunate that people like Dave, who are friends with @Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone, tend to extend their friendship to me too! 🙏🐦💙🇨🇦
@@GrowingBonsai I'm here too! Just taking a summer break from the channel... back in September I hope. Very nice video Jelle! Yes, Jay and I "met" through UA-cam, same as many others, Jay is lucky to live near Nigel and Connor and others, I don't have that luck but it would be great if everyone could meet up some day. And swap some trees and cuttings etc! Someday.......
Very interesting video, thanks Jelle! Gives me confidence to eventually tackle my maples! By the way, 3/5 of my maple forest that dried are pushing out leaves! Thanks for the tips! 🙏
That is indeed a really nice nebari for a typical garden center tree. Good find! Using plastic pots during early development is great advice. As novices, we tend to want to put our trees into nice ceramic pots long before they really deserve it, but with plastic pots you can more carefully control initial form by employing guy wiring and regular wiring simultaneously. Also, I've found that drip irrigation distribution tubing works great as cheap, long-lasting guy wire padding.
Hi John, thank you! I fully agree. You see people running to get things into a nice pot, but not realizing that bonsai pots were made to slow down development. So for a tree in development, it is detrimental to put them in one! I am sure you have seen my video last week on guy wires? I use oxygen tubing for aquaria, but the same thinking applies!
I have been having better luck using the O2/Fish tank tubing. Has virtually eliminated scaring/marring. I sometimes use both guy wiring and wrapping when I need to bend/twist a branch into the shape I am looking toward. Another informative video. Thank you.
@@GrowingBonsai we are having very hot weather at the moment in the UK watering my plants twice a day I was wondering about feeding my trees ,should I feed everything I water in growing season .I use general plant food called Miracle grow what do you recommend..

Could you please talk about how leaf sizes can be controlled in a future video (if possible)? I am in a tropical country and I have a Banyan Bonsai. The leaves are quite huge and I was wondering if you have any tips on maintaining leaf size eventually.
Another good video. I used automotive vacuum hose on the tension wires because it’s fairly thick walls. I’m not sure about the price now since everything has gone up so much. I got a large roll years ago. I also like the idea of the mesh on top. My wife has a few bird feeders and every year in spring the birds peck at any fresh moss I’ve put on
Thank you for this detailed and informative video, very helpful. I have some young Japanese maples with pencil thick trunks and about 600mm tall. Would you recommend cutting down the height in spring or leave them until they get thicker and taller, then cut them down? Thank you.
Hi peter, have you seen my earlier video on developing trunks? I delve a little into the pros and cons of both options. Time spent growing trunks vss scarsize come into play. I would probably let it grow bigger first
I know this video was made many months ago……. but do you remember what month this work was actually done? I have a few maple bonsai’s that I want to defoliate or at least partially defoliate. Is May too soon to perform a defoliation? I deeply appreciate your UA-cam channel! It has so much good content. Thank you and keep up all the great content! Take care!
Hm.. To be honest.. Not really. The date of publishing was around july. I would think, looking at the stage of the growth, this to be june/july. Buut.. This depends a lot on where you are located. I do not look at month of year, I look at the trees for work..
Hi Jelle. Much better contrast and ability to see what you’re doing, thanx. However it’s not very clear to me when to do these operations, it’s no longer early Spring, we’re well past midsummer, then you skip forward then back again. I expect it’s obvious to you, but we’re not all on your wavelength! God’s blessings to you 🙏✝️ ✌️🇺🇦🌻✌️
I had the same thought Gaye, especially since I got a couple of small maples from the garden center yesterday (mid-july) 😁 It’s great to see your work on and the evolution of your trees Jelle, thanks for sharing with us. Maybe as a tip to add some text in the video explaining the time jumps in the sequences.
Thanx for your comment Joseph, I sometimes think I’m the only person sending constructive criticism, (possibly seen as negative?!) God bless you 🙏✝️ ✌️🇺🇦🌻✌️
Upvoting for a good question. Saw these pots also in michelangelo bonsai channel. They make a lot of sense to me since the bottom part is smaller and thus should reduce the amount of water retention in the bottom part. Wondering what Jelle has to say about them
they are known here as bulb pots, as people use them for flowerbulbs (burried inthe garden). I once bought a stack of 100 as they seemed very good for wide rootball development. No perforations on them though!
Thanks for the video :) I started japanese maple a couple years ago. all I have done is wire the main trunk, should I be doing anything else when they are still so young?
Great video! I agree with your chosen methods and timing of application in the development of that tree. One of the main factors is how big you want your bonsai and how thick you want your trunk. If you were going to develop it into a 3ft tree with a 6” trunk diameter then you probably wouldn’t be doing those methods now. I like my maples more natural looking and feminine like this one you show - and as so we transition to using things like defoliation and branch cut backs sooner. Keep growing!
Hi Bonsai Science, exactly. Did you happen to see my video on growing trunks? I dabble in the balance between method, time and trunk thickness there too.
That nebari looks fantastic. it will be a beauty I reckon!
