Fightcade 2 is a godsend for oldies, 3rd Strike is so smooth to play there in comparison to 30th Anniversary Collection and there's a plethora of other great titles to choose from. Shame that JP devs can't be bothered providing a good official port most of the time, it makes all those classics harder for newcomers to play and appreciate until someone points them to other sources.

THANK YOU! for mentioning the gatekeeping of the season pass system. The amount of DLC is super daunting, and I find it to be that way as someone who's been playing for a decade. A great example is tekken, where you need so much intimate knowledge. It's a serious problem not being able to even do punishment training in that game without owning the character.

9 years ago, when I was like 14, I discovered a review of GGXX, the game looked crazy but the thing they prop the most in the review was the soundtrack, they say that even if you don't like the game you should listen to the soundtrack, So I did, the first song I came across was "feel a fear" and I was very impressed. I thought was the coolest stuff because at that time I was hard into metal. So I downloaded the game (yeah piracy was the only way, sorry) and it was amazing, i though it was the coolest shit ever, and that game basically ignited my interest for the FGC.
Fast forward to 2021 and it feels like a dream come true that I can play +R online, I'm still not good at all but I love that game, and i think that what i want the most in a fighting game is cool aesthetics, I'm really bad at FGs so i can't appreciate the mechanics, so i care a lot more about those other elements and i feel that the older titles are way more creative and cool.

I started playing fighting games right before the pandemic. First game I picked up was street fighter 2 turbo, because some anime convention I was at had a cab, and I played against a real sweaty balrog player. As someone who first got into fighting games around the mid 2010's, I've always had a fascination for older fighting games, especially ones released in arcades during the 90's. The hardest part for me personally has always been the less generous buffer windows and the tighter links or cancels (especially for stuff like older KOF), but there's still so much to enjoy even just from spectating or reading about them.

GG or SF2 had lots of iterations, but I don't think any player felt like they could rabble rouse enough to make Sol lose his dust loop or whatever. There's positives with what we have today, but I think folks could just learn to live with shit more often instead of getting overheated and grabbing the pitchforks.

Do you know who is in charge of modding the GGPO netcode into the game? The reason I ask is so I can get in contact with them in order to see what the BB community can do to help the project come to fruition, even if that means paying the modders to do so through a fundraiser. BBCF is currently my favorite fighting game of all time, and I feel like this series has been among the few that has been excluded in the rollback craze, with other series like KOF, GG, SS, MK, and SF having it, and it's about time the BB community had an actual playable environment to play in, so that we can enjoy the game to it's fullest.

Input buffer and Input shortcuts .You can have too much of it, but atleast a little of it is really nice.
Training mode options. The options you see in modern games for training mode, where you can set so many things for the dummy to automatically do is SO good. You forget that when you don't have it.

The grandeur of modern fighting games, the really good ones, is magnified by an appreciation of where they came from and how far they've come. When you've actually lined up to play a Karate Champ machine and seen everything that's been released over the last 37 years it only adds to that hype. Some of y'all youngins wouldn't even know how lucky we are that there are such things as Street Fighter 2 clones and not Martial Champion clones.
And yes, learning (like really learning) one of the classics could probably help even the Millest of the Millenials to have a better understanding and appreciation for not only what makes a game great, but where certain mechanics came from and why/how they survived or evolved over the years. Not to mention there usually was a high execution ceiling on many of the classics that would only improve your own execution if you mastered them.

So I was one of those who thought fighting games were trash. That is until 8 years ago my friends changed my mind. They were massive fans of fighting games and wanted to get their hands on as many as possible. That leads to them having at least one game from a series of the majority of franchises out there. Instead of them getting mad at me and calling me an idiot. They showed me three games Street Fighter Alpha Anthologies, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, and Capcom vs SNK 2. I understand that some of these have issues, but for someone who was brand new to fighting games, it was awesome. I'll always cherish Alpha 3 and CvS2 for getting me into a genre I love. Been going back and playing them and having an absolute blast. And since we also played UMvC3 I have been wanting to get into that as well. I've always been kind of adverse to learning new games after pouring hours into one (Xrd), but since covid hit and we can't really compete in our main games, it has been a breath of fresh air picking up something I've heard of but never really had the urge to try. It also gives us our own little version of trying to figure out tech when games first come out like you mentioned. I definitely recommend trying out a new game once in a while, even if it is only for a week, just to remember what it is like to be new to a game and the excitement of finding tech or landing a hard combo for the first time.

Now that you mention it, the JoJo community was pretty much the first I stumbled into because I didn't really have a game to play yet but I liked the show so I started with that and since it was the first for me I had no point of reference just how much time the people spent on discovering tech and writing guides. The Discord has been a very pleasant experience and I've been in contact with most of the figureheads of it. I even participated in a few online tournaments (though I'm in europe so I had a good 2 second delay) and it was a blast.

Built a discord server around 3rd strike had tournaments and then eventually started playing and having server tournaments for other old fighting games like alpha, acpr, garou, samsho, last blade. I think someone recently even started playing the sailor moon fighting game. Giving these games rollback is something that has kept me in the fgc because tbh SFV connection and matchmaking is kinda garbage out here in india and it's just fun to play and try out these older games that we didn't get to as kids. We made a yt and twitch around it too just to have try and have these tournaments recorded and streamed incase there are other fans who wanna get in on it.

This is something I always want with my friends. No one of them tries older games because of the difficulty(in some cases), mechanics, and "polish" they have in comparison with newer games. For me, this is what makes these games so special, in the last week I spent good hours playing the first Guilty Gear, Art of Fighting 3, and SVC Chaos, all of them are pretty different and enjoyable. I wish they have the patience to experience some of these games, I had so much fun playing Arcade Mode with the old titles man, the victory screens, cutscenes, secrets endings...

I totally agree. Sometimes it’s just great to pick up those old games. I picked up GG for the first time about 1 1/2 years ago, and it’s now my favorite fighting game series.
I always played mk growing up, and my brother SF. One day I randomly came across a Sajam video about MK11. 1 week later he was talking about evo moments from GGxrd. I saw Omito playing Johnny and thought “I need to play this game.” Idk how I didn’t discover this game earlier because I just fell in love with it.
Bro and I buy xrd. He likes the way chipp looks, I play Johnny. Started playing Lobbies night after night losing every match until our third day lol, but we still had a blast. That was September 2019. Then GGac+r gets the rollback patch and we buy that. Turns out we loved that game even more than xrd.
Fast forward to now and he’s maining Johnny and I’m maining chipp in xx. This game easily jumped to our favorite fighting game, dethroning Mk Trilogy, SF alpha 2 and MvC1/2.
Sometimes those old games just ignite something in you. Mk11 didn’t spark that same joy in me like the older titles, but GG for some reason just clicked. It makes me feel like a teenager again. It feels so nostalgic even tho I didn’t start playing in 2019. Now we’re playing GGxxac+r and BBCF almost every other day

Most of the fg's i enjoy are older then i am and personally, you bring a great point about the whole modern fg patch and dlc cycles. I find it hard to stay tuned into a game with consistent or heavy patching with few exceptions. I heavily enjoy it more when i can look and play a game and be like "it is what it is" and not have my future enjoyment and time spent with the game be up in the air because of some wacky 2.0 update or year patch or something. Which is why i will always try to get people to play games of legal drinking age where i am not, a large amount of the moments that make me cherish fighting games is the busted ass stuff that would have gotten patched in a newer title.

The whole reason I don't get into many modern fighting games is absolutely the DLC. It's frustrating to try to get in on the ground floor and then suddenly be completely out of the loop because I don't want to drop extra money on a character I'm simply just not going to play. But that means that I have no opportunity to actually play that character and figure out what they're about so I know what to look for online. I mean I was never good or anything, but it's just disheartening to know that even though I bought a full price game, I no longer have a COMPLETE game because I didn't spend even more money.
Meanwhile games from before the DLC era, all the characters are just THERE, you know? I miss those days.
Edit: Also, shit I would LOVE to have a CvS2 cab. It's the game that made me realize how much I loved fighting games. My friends and I would play the PS2 version all the time when we were in high school.

One more thing I want to comment is that for modern fighting games because of patches a lot of things change. Now that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Some stuff really does need to be toned down or made better, but the drawback from that is that a lot of stuff made early on in a game's life is outdated in the later parts of it. Like FighterZ for example. Cell, Goku Black, and Android 16 were without a doubt the best characters in the game. Memes were made about them and any stuff around that time says they are. If a person who was to get into FighterZ now would be very surprised by how wrong it is. And guides made about characters early on are now wrong and the characters are different, plus that's without the system mechanics added in since it's been out. FighterZ used to only have one assist per character. Now it has 3 per character. THAT'S HUGE. Anyway I agree with Obama. Don't gaitkeep yourself from enjoying old fighting games. Try stuff out man.

I'm 26, the last tournament I entered was Marvel 1 when I was in Australia 2 years ago. As long as you have people to play with, I really don't see the point in *not* playing old games that you have access to.
Matter of fact, I find it less attractive to learn new fighting games than to learn old games that have a thriving scene unless they have good online. Strive is the only new title that I'm seriously considering investing serious time into because the online is wild.

We need more people in the community that are like you, Majin Obama. More people need to see the charm in the old games, not just the current and modern stuff which tones down on the nutty aspects of what makes a cool fighting game (not to say that the new stuff is bad, not at all). I love Tekken 7, but i'd do anything to make older Tekken games more relevant today.

I agree with the point about some older game communities being very inviting. I actually started playing CvS2 in the Osaka area right before covid happened and the scene was super welcoming and down to help me get better. In Covid we've been having very small meetings (like 2-3 people) for players and even the best are always willing to help me understand matchups

The first fighting game I started to learn was 3rd Strike because of the great animation quality. It's a game that came out before I was even born (I was born in 03), but it's visuals and gameplay still hold on to this day. It's really impressive what capcom was able to do here. Oddly enough, I don't play any modern fighting games, and that's because of three reasons:
    1: paid online.
there's no way in hell I'm going to pay for a service that's free on PC
    2: low end PC
I own a laptop with an intel hd 5500
    3: too many DLCs
like you mentioned in the video, the DLCs are big gatekeeper for players, me included.
I don't like the idea of buying new characters to keep up to date with the game, it's a quite the investment and it also makes every new fighting game release feel shallow, because I already know that the game will be incomplete at launch.
I also play Guilty Gear XX and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. I haven't played them nearly as much as 3rd Strike, but, this past week, I have been playing nothing but GG and I'm loving it. I'm trying to apply air grabs to my gameplay and I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Some important points you brought up. Especially the hype cycle holds true to the new model many FGs adapted.
Maybe the reception of those kind of videos can be better once a new hype title is available for 3 months or so. Hoping for an updated version once Strive is out for a while and in which degree it applies to that. Appreciate the thoughts and ideas given in the vid!

For me, a game I want to learn is CVS2 and Project Justice. I used to watch jp CVS2 tournament footage all the time and marvel at how crazy matches got. A buddy of mine did give me a taste of Justice not too long ago and I’m trying like crazy to find a way to either own it or obtain it so I can lab insane aerial combos.

I've been talking about this with my group of washed up salty "left behind" 09er group of friends for about 3-4 years now.
The season system as it is implemented is one of the worse things for the "competitive integrity" of FGs. This loop of uncertainty you described is already bad enough by itself, but when you factor in the monetary interest of creating overpowered DLC characters that consistently disrupt the balance of the game, 4-6 times per year, it becomes kind of nefarious.
Factor in that we used to KNOW and take as fact that fighting game characters are damn hard to make. They're not just skins and 10-20 animations. So these companies are stretching themselves while thinning down and simplifying the content so they can pump out 6 of them in a year.
Plus, what is basically 2 "mandatory" big patches per season, it just creates games that are completely unstable competitively, but also gradually lose sight of whatever initial design they may have had at some point during their inception, which alienates early-adopters and does nothing to bring in newer players because they already "missed the bus", and even if they want a ticket, it's 5-seasons worth of cash.
The system is for the devs pocket, not for the consumer, even though the consumer is glad to just gobble it up and hype it up.
I want charas too, but i honestly prefered more strategic drops like Rev2, without the whole "new version pay again lol" baggage, ofc.
Also the game i missed out on was MvC2...

It's funny but since I been creating my a game doc for a 3v3 fighting game i've been revisiting old games to get ideas on movesets, animations, character playstyles etc etc, The ones that I've found super interesting and have been putting a lot of time into have been GGACR and Tatsunoko vs Capcom. But I wanna try out more so see some of the wackier ideas some less known developers have made.

Not necessarily a boomer game, but a while back me and a friend over the course of like a week played every BlazBlue game for an afternoon or so. Seeing that through line of the absolute jank bullshit of CT to the familiar unfamiliarity of CPEX to finally getting to CF was really rewarding and we both learned a lot about BlazBlue and how the game functions by doing that, it was really fun to do.

I got into GG with Xrd when I was 15. Prior to that when the game was not out yet I spent a lot of time grinding out GGx2 reload and slightly learning how to play Dizzy and Sol. I always liked the feeling of old school fighting games like 3rd strike and older GG titles. The game I wished I got into however was the older Blaze Blue games. I tried BBtag and liked the switch mechanic a lot but the Single character depth while there was not enough to make me wanna play long term.

Really cool video. I was really into GGRev2 (and not much else), but when the pandemic hit, prospects for play obviously got significantly worse. I still play Rev2 often but I have to curate who I play with pretty hard to make sure I still feel like I'm playing the game I fell in love with. I ended up picking up +R when the rollback beta rolled out, since I had seen some of the more famous CMVs like Third Eye and some Fino VODs, and it definitely took me a while to get into it. The game felt a bit clunky, some characters felt more blatantly broken (both broken strong and broken bad) than in Rev2, and I kinda didn't stick with it at first, but after some revisits I've definitely come around to enjoying the game a lot, and maybe more importantly, understanding it and what made it special to the people that dedicate their time to it. Same thing happened with Third Strike; gave it a shot, and after a bit of a warming-up period, I've started having a fantastic time with the game. I've been struggling to keep up with more modern games, between disinterest in some and the pricing of others, so older games have been waaaaay more accessible- some slightly more esoteric stuff is way more palatable than the price of a lot of games at launch now. Cheers!
