Despite its reputation as being equal, symmetrical and passive, the Exchange Philidor is still a very interesting opening and the reputation is misleading. Not too many people imagine opposite side castling and kingside pawn storms when they think Philidor, but that’s what happens most of the time!
Similarly to what happens in the Sicilian (except that the pawn is on c7 instead of e7), in several key variations of the Exchange Philidor both sides are going to attempt a quick attack, mostly neglecting their own king safety and positional principles.
The positions can, of course, end up being truly symmetrical and boring if the players choose to do so. In some lines you get a three on three structure on both sides of the board with nothing to do for either side. So the conclusion is that the variation is versatile and rich in possibilities. The middlegames can be remarkably different from one another depending on the mood of the players, and you can get a wild attacking masterpiece or a quick boring draw.

Im not sure you will see this comment as it's on a video from last year but i really genuinely need to thank you for making these videos (on all the openings) they really really are of a high quality and i believe it is something you can and should be proud of. When i was first learning chess i couldn't really find any satisfying opening theory videos on youtube but you really well and truly have filled that void perfectly. My only fear is that your videos became world famous and all my opponents have watched them as well haha
I used to always hate seeing this variation because, I didn’t think I could play aggressively against it, but now I’m quite excited to see it in a game and to castle long and pawn storm
I like to add after the exchange Bishop e7 is a move which is very common at a lower level, in fact on lichess it's the number 2 move with 40k(top Nf6 with 106k). It usually transposes into the lines talked about if white just play knight c3, but white can play the move c4 and play a maroczy bind set up, which I think is an easy and best way to take advantage of this different move order. White gets too much space and black already as to sit and wait.
This Is the best line in the Philidor Defense for me. Good video!

Black is up a knight and both sides can't castle so u don't get anything and also u exchange queens so there is no counter plays for white

At 15:04, after White's Qd3 Bxa2 White plays Nd2 followed by Rhe1 wins the knight at e4. I do not see how Black avoids being a piece down after losing that Knight.

What about Phillidor defence from the bishop opening. Is the something diference? Please say some word also about Portugease in Scandinavian variation. 1.e4 d5 2exd5 Nf6 3.d4 Bg4. Is very dynamic and interesting opening.
I'm new to the game and have been working on a couple openings. I came here because I had been working on the King's Indian from the White side.... and of course I hadn't yet looked into Black side play too much. So... I tried to do essentially a King's Indian but from the Black side. The computer then called my moves "Philidor" and my opponent and I went into the exchange variation. Now as I watch this video, is it fair to say that the Larson variation where you Fianchetto the bishop can turn into a Black side King's Indian?

Some closed sicillians probably. However that's something white has to choose to go into
Don't listen to the other guy. Sicilian is nothing like the dutch. Depends on the type dutch. There is nothing like the stone wall. The lenningrad is most like a pirc, the antoshin is most like the hanham variation, the classical also doesnt have anything really like it. Your best bet is 1. d6, and if you like the whole fianchettoing your bishop then attack with f5, play 1. d6 2. nf6 3. g6. If you like having a stronghold on e5, play d6 nf6 c6 qc7

In case you wonder, 6.Bg5 doesn't work because of 6...Nxe4 winning a pawn after the exchange.
