Whether it's worth it or not depends on what you are hoping for.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you switch from an i5-3230m to an i7-3632qm, you're going from 2c/4t to 4c/8t, but you're also lowering the base frequency from 2.6 to 2.2 GHz. The 3632qm is designed to fit into a 35W TDP envelope and has to be clocked lower to meet it. Workloads using 1-4 threads will take a hit. You have to get to five or more threads to benefit. And where gaming is concerned, you're only going as fast as that GPU can benefit from added CPU power in any case.
I actually did something very similar with an HP ProBook 4540s last year, replacing an i5-3210m with an i7-3720qm, a 45W 4c/8t CPU with a 2.6/3.3 speed. The 4540s never shipped with that CPU but is known to be able to handle it. I have a Radeon HD 7650M GPU onboard. However, I am also running Linux and more interested in multithread performance and not gaming. For me, the upgrade was a tremendous success and makes this machine nearly as capable, relative to time and place, as when it was new. If I were running Windows and wanting to game, I wouldn't have done this, especially since the Ivy Bridge CPUs can't run Windows 11 without hacking.

Does Linux have a lot of overhead like Windows does? Thank you 🤓

    • @johncate9541
      @johncate9541 5 місяців тому +2

@@j.lietka9406 If by overhead, you mean system resources, Linux is less demanding than Windows. Linux will use less RAM and CPU cycles than Windows will on the same hardware, and it also supports older CPUs much better than Windows does. You can still run old Core 2 Duos viably on Linux. With an i7-3720qm installed, it positively flies.
The only drawback is that a lot of Windows software cannot be coaxed to run on Linux even with the Wine compatibility layer. If you switch to Linux, you have to be OK with using Linux software at least some of the time. When I switched in 2015, I had been using stuff like VLC, LibreOffice, Firefox and GIMP for years already. Going to Linux was no big deal, because all of those are FOSS software anyway.

Thank you so much for the information! I am sure other people will also find it useful.
My main usage is running scripts and hosting local services. The gaming part is just for the audience, because I guess it would be more interesting for people to watch game benchmarks rather than script running.

With the bigger HP 8760w you can have even faster gpus and there are modded bioses out there to support newere gpus like 900m series.
Im thinking about trying it :)
The best upgrade i ever did was on my Alienware M18x in 2012 that had 2x GTX460m 1.5gb sli, upgraded to 2x Radeon 6970m 2gb cf.

As for HP 8560w, you're long way from maxing it out GPU wise, I've had GTX 1650 in mine before I decided to upgrade to Zbook G4. There are Quadro options like T1000 in MXM Type A form factor as well. But they do cost money .. I think I got my 1650 for almost $200

@gunawangunawansantoso4122 Could be a multitude of issues, since it won't boot past POST. Could be the CPU gave out, you need to replace your RAM, the motherboard failed (or just needs a cleaning on the CPU, GPU, and RAM sockets) or you need to update your BIOS (if there are any left for a motherboard that old). I suggest trying a BIOS update first if you can. Then see if you can run MemTest86+ on it to find RAM faults. And if all that fails, try reseating the CPU in its socket.
And if that fails, consider getting a new PC. Costly repair work won't be worth much on an old machine.

Something to consider if possible for the GPU is using MSI afterbuner to overclock and specially undervolt the GPU, i personally had some luck with the desktop GT 740 back in the day, and squeezed some extra performance without risking anything, the same with some other laptops i had the luck to tinker with, not always possible, but always worth a check.
Something else to consider, is that W10 is quite heavy, specially in these older systems, would recommend a lightweight Linux distro, like Mint or Arch with KDE Plasma, that or roll back to W7, the intended OS for many of these old computers.

Older electronics are indeed built to last. Now, companies sell expensive disposable tops with irremovable SSD (staring at Apple...)

Always make bios update before hardware upgrades!! Then investigate what is the highest cpu and ram that this MB support, then install SSD and the laptop will live second life.

I am still trying to find a suitable place to setup my equipment. PS3 requires a larger setup and more space.
Currently, I can only find shared space to do simple repair.

Thing is... Windows is screwing us over trying to make you throw them in the landfill... Real planet friendly Microsoft... Going to lose windows 10 support and windows 11 wont work on these. Ive got it installed on a 4th gen but 24h2 will attempt to stop it... Nope I wont let it. If one day my computers will not boot im calling a lawyer. Maybe we should all start something.... I mean my god my Alienware 6th gen is amazing to this day, but they want it in the landfill and make us buy new... Im in no way throwing away a 1800$ dollar laptop when new... Get a life Microsoft....

The i7 runs hotter and you are having throttling issues.

    • @hardwarerepair200

That's indeed one of my concerns. I have been wondering if the i7 version of this laptop has a better heat sink than the i5 version.
But the i7 version the laptop is quite difficult to find these days, so I can't confirm it.
