The scene with soldiers was so powerful! How can Max portray someone so strong and intimidating and yet vulnerable in one scene????? I mean whhhhaattt? I love you, Max!
It's like i've been waiting for years for Nick to finally gain the power. It was foreshadowed so many times with the way of shooting him. My boy is smart and he hates gilead just the same as june even though he fought for it. He said "once you get in bed with the government, it's not easy to get out". It's what's happening to him now. He knew it the hard way. It's obvious to me he regretted talking to the commander 100 times, regretted being so stupid to believe him and come to that meeting. We never saw nick believe in gilead because he didn't. Maybe only at the beginning when he was brainwashed. That dude saw that he can convert him because Nick was desperate and weak at the time. And then Nick had to survive because there was no way out.
Of course we have drama atm when nick looks kinda shady but i don't doubt him a second. June is a lucky bitch to have such an ally wow. He's the strongest and the smartest, my ovaries explode.
Don't blame him for not telling June about his past. I mean it's not even selfish thing to do because this info would destroy her and he knows it. How can you tell that ?Instead he was gaining power so that he could strike when the time is right to help her. Because he is always thinking about her.

Great video as always. Me being someone who just caught up with the series doesn't understand the hate people have for Nick. He didn't get to be in the position he's in far as even being in Gilead just for having a cute face. I don't think he fully understood what he was signing up for before he sold his soul to the government. Nick is a good guy who has put his life on the line to help June. I believe he has something big planned but has to be careful of how it plays out
I agree, he has a good soul/heart and when all this Gilead thing started he didn't fully realised what was going to be and how this binds you (when he told June you about politicians/politic that you can't get out of it easily...) but knowing her and falling in love with her, wanting to help her and others shows us that he is not the bad guy... sometimes you get into the wrong side/things but you can always redeem yourself doing good...I am sure we will see his character development and he will do something, hopefully for the good. He has to play smarter than all these shitty people. The one who cannot be redeemed is Fred who has a weak personality and would do anything to have others approval and a good position....and Serena is the one who is annoying me sooo bad...her constant changes and the promise she broke and the bitchy way she spoke to June at the end of episode 5...what a bad, empty person, as June said.
I love their relationship I think he was jobless afraid and got himself into something he didn't fully understand. But as he said once in you can't get out so he's stuck in this way of life,but he has a deep love for June and I believe he will do whatever to protect her.
I so hope you are right... so far he has shown himself to be an ally to June.

If you think about everything he went trough to get to this point you can understand why he disagreed so much with June about an agreement. He knows what politicians do because that's what happened to him. I truly believe he didn't know what he was signing up to. If he really agreed with Gilead he'd never helped June, never depart from his wife and never kept the secrets of that house. He's not a bad person. He's a pawn in the system. He probably did horrific things, doesn't mean he is bad. It's not white or grey in cases like this, there's so much psicology behind, the urge to simply survive.
I suppose the soldiers in the Balkan war also told themselves they are not bad, even though they did horrific things. or any other war, for that matter, I just mentioned the recent war in Europe....

He helped build Gilead and killed civilians for that damned regime, he is absolutely part of the system and a huge one. Just because he loves June doesn't mean he's a good person..all the other women and girls? I can't believe so many people can't/don't want to see it just because they love Nick and June together..I loved them too, but their relationship isn't more important than the horrific consequences of a shitty choice of one half of the pair and his involvement in all the pain, suffering and death.

I honestly can't believe people were shocked to realize he played a part in the early stages of Gilead. I realized it when they showed him in the flashback with a commander and Nick was invited to a Sons of Jacob meeting.
There's no hate for Nick .. he's just an important man....and JUNE LOVES HIM ANDHE LOVES HER..

To be honest I don't really like how they're suddenly revealing that Nick's past is darker than it previously seemed. I'm not saying that I doubt Nick, just that I don't think it's particularly good writing. It just seems like drama for the sake of drama. To me it never seemed like Nick used to be an actual soldier on the front, I always thought he'd been acting as a bodyguard to the commanders and working all that time under Pryce. It's always been clear to me that he never agreed with Gilead's laws, but Pryce was probably the first person who made him feel like he wasn't worthless and so he was loyal to him. Also Pryce seemed like one of the better commanders, who didn't want to enslave the handmaids and then he became the boss of the Eyes so he was punishing other commanders for their crimes. So it could make sense that while working for him, Nick didn't particularly realize how bad it was all getting. But to now suddenly believe that Nick actually fought for the cause and hurt people in the process? Nah, I'm not buying it, like that's out of character? We've never seen Nick be anything but respectful, especially towards the innocent, defenceless ones, I just can't imagine him being a soldier in the crusade, unless there is more to the story and he didn't actually fight. I also can't imagine June never asking him about it, can't imagine Nick lying to her and can't imagine him not wanting to tell her and her just accepting it and moving on. All of these options are, again, out of character for both.
Another silly writing choice for me was the Swiss/Canadian logic: we're not trusting Nick Blaine with a child's fate, because we know he worked for Gilead, but we're gonna trust the people who literally created Gilead with said child's fate. Okaaay?
It just pisses me off that everyone's now like: "I always knew Nick couldn't be trusted", because... why? When have we ever seen him do anything evil, misogynistic, disrespectful or treacherous? He always tried to protect June, even way before he fell in love with her. He was haunted by that first handmaid's suicide. He begged Eden to lie and save herself, begged her for forgiveness. He delivered the letters to Luke, sought him out on his own, told him about June, told June about it even though it broke his heart etc. etc. Seriously, we've seen Luke do worse things and act much more like an asshole, yet now they seem to be painting Luke as the perfect good guy? Ugh, it's so frustrating.
Anyway, on to the good stuff! First of all, Happy Birthday!!! Hope you're having a great day! Secondly, that scene between Nick and June at night KILLED me, it was the most perfect kiss those two ever shared, sooo emotional and tender. I feel like most of their kisses before were more hungry and desperate, while this one was so sweet and loving. Perfection. And finally - WHAT A VIDEO!!! I love it! It perfectly shows the contrast between the person Nick's passing for officially in front of Gilead and who he really is when he's around the people he cares about. It's also done so well, it could legit be a professional clip prepared by the showmakers themselves.
I just hope that Nick has a plan that will bring Gilead down and I hope June forgives him eventually. My poor baby is so full of regret, I just need him to be told he's forgiven. I wish people could see that he has a genuinely good heart, he just let himself be misled and manipulated by the wrong people when he was vulnerable and alone. I hope June also understands that.

Secondly , i wish i had the energy to explain all of this because to me it doesn't seem like a bad writing and totally makes sense. I even think to myself why the hell i hadn't guessed? It's excellent writing. I'm here for it... and even if he did kill people (and, per spoilers, it seems he did - Littlefield has been a bit reckless today in his media today) it doesn't make his story any less amazing. More, even. I'm sure it'll ramp up the angst and interest in Nick. And Irina will, doubtless, capture that angst beautifully.
Ok, i'll try to explain the way i see it. He was recruited as we saw in really desperate times when he was weak and you are right that pryce probably made him feel worthy. Also he said "you are not alone" which he needed because he was. I do believe he was brainwashed in the beginning and he might have even believed after this manipulation that he was doing the right thing before things got ugly. But as he said "once you get in bed with government it's not so easy to get out" he was clearly talking about himself that he's been a prisoner here for a very long time. Once he agreed to do something for them he sold his soul to them and later he couldn't choose what job to do. If you disobey you'll be on the wall. So i think he had to survive and act like he agrees with them. Also we know he was fighting for gilead according to serena who clearly wanted to get to june so we don't even know what exactly he did and how he felt about it. I do believe he was more than just a bodyguard because pryce really cared for him so he did something bigger unfortunately. It was foreshadowed many times when he got away with different situations like in 2x10 for example. And i feel sorry for him even more now because i know what a good person he is (we've seen it so many times). He never agreed with them but he had to act like he does. And also he became a commander after june couldn't escape so he made a move not because he believes in gilead. But because he needs more power to help june. He couldn't tell her about his past because he knew that would be devastating to her. And how much more she can suffer ? He wasn't even being selfish with not telling it , he didn't tell for her sake as he is the only person who she cared about in this place and knowing he fought as a soldier for gilead would kill her 😭
But couldn’t Pryce have gave Nick a good position because he believed him and wanted him to feel valuable and then Nick went undercover for Pryce as a driver even though he is a high ranking eye.

This is exactly what it was with nick . He obviously wasn't very successful in his former life . This gave him a new chance and he didn't understand how bad everything was until somebody he cared about was affected

He was recruited by an evil regieme when he was desperate, poor, like young men often are. He probobally tried to leave and couldn't. He was dead inside until he met June. She gave him something to fight for, something to live for. We will see him trying to right the wrongs of his past. And I am HERE FOR IT.
I could never hate Nick, because just like the handmaides and the Marthas and the childrens, he's a victim of the circumstances, someone who in a certain way has no choice, and I think that he's is going to be a very important part of the end of Gilead and that June is going to understand that. The real Villains are the Waterfords and all the commanders and wifes
thank you. I was waiting to see a video of this episode. I love the character of Max (there's so much we do not know about him) and I hope they dig deeper into his past. I must say, the scenes of Nick and June this season are beautiful, I still have hope for them.
I don't mind a dark past....As long as the person it involves acknowledges it and wants to change. I'd like to think Nick is like that, meaning, on the way to get rid of his dark side and I'd also like to believe falling for June was the reason for it, though his future seems doomed with her anyway, to me. On the other hand, if I were in June's place, that is, right after what was revealed to her in ep.6 - S.3., I'd try to stay as far away from him as possible, I wouldn't trust him ever again. It's sad to know June's all alone again. Two girls to protect and no light at the end of the tunnel. Can't wait to see what they do with it.

What about Luke? Doesn't he deserve to have his daughter? I don't think things bode well for Nick, unfortunately. His child is bonding with Luke, and only knows Luke as a father. Nick will probably get killed off eventually. Sadly, that is the only thing I see happening to end the love triangle.
There is the possibility that Nick made a deal with the Swiss to say that he is not to be trusted, but actually he will help them. Remember, the Swiss haven't made up their minds yet - why not? And, it would be very dangerous for Nick to go against the wishes of the commanders, even if he is high-up. Just a thought. This video is very good, thanks.

I thought that myself tbh. If you look back at their earlier interactions it's Nick who make the first move all the time, the scene in the kitchen just after the Commander gave her that magazine June is talking about signs that a person likes you cos Nick came into the kitchen for no particular reason, then in another of June's voice overs she's talking how she feels sorry for him he must be lonely. If you think of how many scenes June is alone thinking out loud yet she never says anything about how she feels about Nick. I know a lot of people doubt whether Nick really loves her well for me it's the other way around, I doubt June's feelings for Nick, after all she's the one who's married and has a child with that person and she's made it perfectly clear that she'll do whatever it takes to get Hannah out of Gilead and I imagine if that means using and manipulating Nick sexually then she will. After all she's seen the way he looks at her so she already knows how he feels about her.
All i can say is WOW! I have never been a Nick fan, or truly believed that it is LOVE that bonded June & Nick; rather a trauma-bond. This video has changed my mind.
I had to comment even though I haven’t before because I reaaaally love your videos (ALL OF THEM - thank you!). I started watching Handmaid’s Tale about two months ago and was completely caught off guard by these two and I’ve been stuck in a Nick and June hole ever since, like seriously, oh my goodness. But I’m worried about Season 3. Very worried. But each week when I feel worried about how they are handling Nick’s character in Season 3 I come here and watch a video and you somehow reassure me with your reaction to each episode. So thank you! I’m really nervous about spoilers so I am staying off most of reddit/tumblr/twitter as every time I go on those sites I seem to see something about a future episode!
I love Max’s portrayal and I believe he is showing us Nick’s true colours and I agree that anyone who has been paying close (or even any) attention to Nick’s storyline knows he could never be “a bad guy”. Literally there is not one scene. And the line “Once you get in bed with the government it’s not easy to get out” is all you need to know where his head’s at. But I am worried about the writing and where they are going to go this season for the sake of drama. I just hope they stay true to the beautiful characterisation of Seasons 1 & 2 because seriously I’m in love with this show and I don’t know what I’m going to do if they f*** it up. I’m also worried about how June is treating him this season - “This is your one chance to be a father to our daughter - how many do you think you’re going to get?” WHAT ABOUT HAWAII, June, where’s your hope for the future gone? It seemed a bit manipulative, she knows he could be killed like THAT if they find out he spoke to the Swiss. Whatever happened to “I can’t lose you, do you hear me?” (2x06) / “What about you?” (2x07) It seems like she’s putting him in harm’s way. But I guess the stakes are higher now for her and that’s why. I was quite hopeful after the tape last episode because I felt like they’d forgotten about him and then FINALLY some acknowledgement. Even though I like Luke and the scene where he was listening to the tape was heartbreaking for him and I felt it, I almost felt like she was telling him to move on, like she knew she couldn’t go back to him. I think everyone who’s a fan of Nick and June imagines what the future could hold for them if they were to make it out and last episode gave me a bit of hope.
Also not sure about the reveal of him being ‘a soldier’ because it doesn’t seem congruent with what we’ve seen of his past before to me. He’s never seemed military before this season, yes he had a gun but he’s been the “low status” driver. To me I felt like he coasted as Gilead rose, complicit yes (which I’m not saying is an ok thing) but not an active role… he didn’t have anything to lose, he was disengaged from society. In the flashbacks (1x08) he was always just a driver, driving the Commanders around when they were coming up with the ceremony. And then when the last Offred hanged herself it snapped him back into the real world and he became an Eye. I don’t agree with the writing here that he had a military background. But I guess it gives them a chance to explore June’s feelings for his past which the show hasn’t really addressed before.
I also don’t really like him being a Commander now 1) because I don’t think it’s realistic that he would be now… what reasoning has there been for it? Again…. he was a low status driver, where did the promotion come from… and 2) because logically I don’t see how this can end any other way than him being killed. I feel they’re not going to ‘give him a Wife’ as they already did that storyline last season with Eden but it’s not realistic for him not to have one as a Commander in Gilead. So unless he’s just constantly going to be at the battlefront until the collapse of Gilead (in which case, I’m constantly fearing for his safety and he’s not going to be with June much… sob), or unless he gets out to Canada (which I don't think he will do as he won't leave June) then I just feel like surely this just ends with him dying. Even though it kills me to say it.
UUUUUH I have so many emotions. It's been a while since a show has got me this invested. I’m sorry for my long comment (you don’t even know me haha) but I haven’t been able to speak to anyone about this series and I feel like watching your videos… you get it. I mean my mum watches it too (S1 & S2) and even she was like “I don’t know if I trust Nick.” COME ON MUM, REALLY. I can’t stand all the Nick hate. Are people watching a different show?
I just hope they do him justice. SIGH. I’m not so trusting of character arcs with writers after Game of Thrones Season 8.

Just finished season 2. Such a tragic love story. I love the mystery behind nicks character. He was definitely a glimmer of hope for June in this tragic world. I did watch the first episode of season 3 and I hated how their farewell went. I thought after all that it’s just a fast goodbye? This edit capture June and Nick beautifully. A beautiful dark mysterious relationship that doesn’t seem to have many words but tons of passion.

4th can we please appreciate the foreshadowing in this episode first that Nick/June scene "you get in bed with the government it's not easy to get out" this line speaks volumes of Nick worrisome look at the end of that scene...He is literally addressing his current situation and he knows any government at this point cannot be trusted even the Swiss.
5th I feel like Nick might just be a step a head of a desperate June who I feel like is in mom mode and not thinking clearly...time after time June always underestimates Gilead folk and always comes across very overzealous...this is why I think that Army Salutation scene with Nick and the guardians these are anti-Gilead army...also June saying this is his one chance to be a father...let that sink in because Nick is about to be on super dad Mode!!! PROTECT HOLLY, HANNAH and their clueless Mommy 😂😂😂😂
6. More foreshadowing...on Nick's influence with the "army" salutation did anyone else notice how the Handmaids did not kneel until June did...she is a leader and she has not grasped this yet...

Thanks! I really needed this after yesterday's episode. I was so heart broken at the prospect of him being a monster like the rest of them.
I definitely don't agree with or like his decisions but he is clearly capable of being a good person. I don't think he has some larger plan, because to me Nick represents the average impressionable young man who gets caught up in conflicts and follows orders to survive. A passive but still complicit path that doesn't absolve him of his crimes. Whereas June and other women in the show are the true revolutionaries. But I think in the end Nick will become a revolutionary as well for June's sake, maybe with the help of Lawrence. I reallly enjoy well written morally grey characters and can't wait to see how he develops in season 4.

The earlier seasons they showed Nicks recruitment into The Sons of Jacob and made moves to suggest he was with Waterford to essentially spy on him , great writing especially as it’s now so far past the book!, loved this vid gorgeous editing and music 🎵

Why judging Nick? Or June or Luke? They all have done smth from choices of their own. They simply humans. And as humans we make mistakes. In the book Nick is one of the leader of Resistance and yes, he was lost soul pre Gilead but I can't shake of the feeling that there is smth more to his story. For me he is much mentally stronger than June like he is used to than or was thought to hide feelings (soldier). June is as caracter stronger than everyone even than her husband Luke. And that is what she had to learn, that she is not passive aggressive person. This season will show us how she is strong and how she will learn to manipulate with them. Luke on the other hand is a good guy, loving one, passive and someone who wasn't able to readjust to reality. He is the One guy who will make you feel that the world is good and that everything will be OK. But we know that this is a one big lie. On the other side is Nick who faced reality, very cruel one. And he will not make it beautiful and won't explain it, he will try it to solve it. June is someone how was running away from herself and not paying attention to what she is - strong person. I knew you would give us a great video showing all the things Nick has done in the past to help June and the others fight Gilead against this one scene where he really doesn't do anything that shady in my opinion. I mean, they did show us in season 1 that he was kind of recruited by that Gilead guy, though I'm not clear about whether he was recruited as a "double agent" right from the beginning or if he became one later on. All I know is that I'm kind of baffled at some of the comments I've read by some people who were shocked to find out that Nick is actually not to be trusted and that he's actually a bad guy! I mean, have we watched the same show? Personally I've always thought his aim was that of destroying Gilead from within and to do that you need to gain their trust and climb the hierarchical ladder, and yes, it starts with fighting for them. Also, what he said about getting in bed with a governement it's not an easy situation to get out of once you've done it, it is so true and I think that's basically his situation, but despite that he did go talk with the Swiss but they decided not to trust him because of his past apparently. So, yeah they wanted to convince me that Nick is a bad guy? Well, LOL try again. Also, I think this will finally force June to take matters into her own hands and do something to actually start this freaking rebellion we've been waiting for for ages. That said, I thank you for always making such beautiful videos, always so on point and so-well edited! Also, I wish you the happiest of birthdays, you deserve it!

It's just that when I saw the "revelation" scene about Nick I thought "Well, it sucks that he had to be part of that shit, but it was to be expected" and that was all my reaction, really. I didn't find it shocking or shady, and it didn't make me change my mind about him 'cause there was no reason to, I was definitely more shocked at reading comments like "Nick fuck you!" or "Why isn't more people talking about the Nick revelation???" Uhmmm, because that was not really that much of a revelation if you pay attention, and I guess you haven't.

Can't agree with you guys more! When he reappears in the scene in ep. 6 and Fred asks him to stand near them to check for the record it I am like "yesss" and I love the way he touches her hand...I mean... he's sexy. And he does care/love her. And when he is outside waiting for June I wish they had more romantic time because in such a bad world they're living, such love and affection is pure light. I always found his character very interesting and secretive and I would love to know more and finally they're digging into his story. He is a good soul and hope he is planning a big thing to screw them all and save her, even if it means to sacrifice himself which I'm sure is ready to do. Go Nick. (Ps: I think he's hot af, the actor is perfect for this role, so good)

@@traceythomas3576 There were Nick scenes later in Season 3 that were filmed but that were cut (a leaked episode still was found last week showing him in soldier gear) 😭 I am hopeful he will return in some capacity for Season 4, though the wait will kill me.

I also realized that when Commander Pryce died , nobody knew they were close. So Serena definitely isnt privy to what Nick did or didnt do. Maybe even Fred doesnt know, he just has vague idea .

People, Nick didn't leave of his own volition. Waterford asked why he wasn't shipped out yet, and then he made sure that Nick was shipped out before he could talk to the Swiss. I wasn't even aware that there was a hatred towards Nick because I absolutely adore him and I've never seen people speak badly about him before. I love Nick and June together and I want them to be together. Nothing is as it seems, we knew that Nick was a soldier, we saw when he was signed up it wasn't exactly his choice. No one in this world has choices, not if you want to stay alive. If Nick has something up his sleeve then maybe he needed to leave for it. Or perhaps the commander just wanted him out of the way because he doesn't like the fact that Nick is Nicole's / Holly's true father and he got him shipped out before he could talk with anybody. Let's have some faith in him. I don't question his love for June at all I believe that he's genuinely in love with her, and he risked himself several times over for her.

If anyone really watched and understood Nick, they would know that Nick has been a lost soul before he joined Gilead. He was taken, as a boy, under the wing of Gilead. They sold Gilead as the new family he could have.
Serena said he was a soldier of Gilead - I don't know that I fully believe Serena. She could be playing June to manipulate her into bringing Nicole back into Gilead. If June thinks Nick is against her or if Nick is a terrible person, then she may "want Nicole back with Serena". This could all be a ploy.
Let's say Nick really fought the war, does that make him a bad person? Did he really know what Gilead was going to be at that time? Maybe but maybe not. We don't know that yet.
If he was so vital to the war, why was given a position as a driver? And that too to Waterford and not some higher up official? Yes, Nick is being shown in a bad light right now, but if he was an Eye, he still went ahead and broke all the laws of Gilead when he tried to get June out. He's clearly had a change of heart. He knew about the Jezebels, yet he didn't do anything to stop it?
Maybe he went undercover boss style.

OH LORD. This was incredible!! Such a good twist actually. I love how this season started by June getting momentum but one by one her reality is shattered. I mean she shouldn't have trusted Serena or Fred really but Nick is a blow. There was geniune love there but now who knows!? How can she ever move forward or trust him again? I think June is going to start getting desperate now to get Hannah and leave.

Hey Irina, as ever, your videos, music choice and editing are fantastic! It's just a pity that this season 3 has not provided you with more material for the June and Nick relationship! Sigh! Overall I have been pretty underwhelmed by this season I'm afraid... I had such high hopes for it but the episodes just aren't taking us anywhere... Too many plot holes and the character arcs are just not on point in my opinion. they could be doing much more in terms of nicks storyline and also the interactions with June have been virtually non existent! Now they are trying to throw in some twist to make doubters think Nick is shady! Which anyone who has watched his sacrifices over the last two seasons should know he is definitely not shady and he will only ever have June and his child's best interests at heart! They really need to be delving deeper into some of these lesser known characters and stop giving us overkill of Serena and fred! The writers really need to have an overhaul of what they are doing this season, otherwise they are gonna lose a lot of loyal viewers....
Yeah i completely agree. The plot is not moving forward repeating the same all over again. The way they try to make nick look like a bad guy is not intriguing at all because we know he is not and he's never has been. So i assume they are planning his grande comeback as a hero towards the end of the season and they expect everyone to be surprised like Wow He is not a bad guy ! Actually he is the best ! Shocker right? Lol ridiculous because it is obvious he is the best so... They are wasting the potential of this season with this "mystery of mr blaine" ugh
