This is such a great video. I was told by a doctor / some medical professionals that I have small airways disease. Also I have anxiety and a hiatal hernia. Do you have any advice for me for how to better my breathing? I have a hard time breathing through my nose and calming myself down.
If you are in Germany, I could teach you . Breathing is best learnt non-digitally sitting next to an experienced pranayama teacher who keeps the practice staedy himself/herself. Sadly there are mary fakes also in India and around the world.
Though YOGA originated from India they never approached it in a scientific way and never explained it in a science based approach. Instead they name each asanas in a complicated way and difficult to understand even for Indians. Your approach in dealing yogic exercises in a scientific way evokes interest for lay man.
Dear Ravi Kumarji YOU are absolutely wrong! Kaivalyadham does yoga in a scientific manner. Swami Kuvalyanandaji, the founder immersed himself in the scientific study behind yoga and Kaivlyadham and his direct lineage is the best in the world when it comes to pranayama. More than a century ago he started serious scientific research on his practice from his Guru and spread the Hatha Pradipika and the science behind it. I have done my yoga therapy teacher training under Dr. Paul Dallaghan who is a a senior student of O-P Tiwariji (also our supervisor during my course). Please ask this man who he learnt his pranayama under - the name of his teacher. I was a part of my teacher's PhD programme on the effects of pranayama and i have been practising ever since. end of July I will start posting on my advanced teacher training in pranayama that I will be doing with my teacher Dr Paul Dallaghan.
Lucas: could you be so kind to share the name of your teacher please? In Yoga Philosophy as any Indian tradition, the guru.shishya parampara is the most important. Would be nice if you share your teacher's name and thank your teacher! :)
To #4 and #5: In the book Breath by James Nestor, he talks about top performing athletes with nose breathing and about freedivers who reach 30% more lung capacity through breathwork.
People use "lung capacity" in the vernacular to mean "improved breathing mechanics". In real life, maybe 5% increase 15% on the high high end. For most people, capacity is not going to change - but I understand the semantics are annoying for people. But I think it's worth understanding.
This guy's website says...."Our school is science-based, business-positive, and future focused. The success of YTC graduates speaks for itself. No gurus, no incense, no chakras, no Om’s. We’ve taken the best of ancient yoga practiced and combined it with modern science and technology to provide trainees real career opportunities......" Amazing BRANDING Lucas! As a statistician and having studied a lot of data, I would like to conclude that science has no answers to many questions .... All our Indian knowledge gets exported - reimaged, repacked and sold to us rebranded as "backed up by science". HAha. Dear Lucas: Om is the pranava - the bginning and the end perhaps and incense does not hurt because you might FART while doing specific asanas.
I’m ngl, one of my therapists brought up belly breathing, and I misunderstood them for years, until I watched a vid on why belly breathing wasn’t the best way, and then it hit me: I’ve been belly breathing wrong.
The marathon record holder ran with a pulse in the 130's through out his race u can make ur thoracic area more flexible so lungs can expand more u can improve the lungs oxygen exchange capabilities
Hi Andrew - There is a common rumor that elites are at a zone 2 HR and nose breathing. but I've never seen anything to suggest that record holders are not in a zone 4 or 5 HR throughout entire event and mouth breathing. I'd love to be wrong, send me info if you have info please send. re: your comment, yes, VO2 max is highly trainable, lung capacity much less so.

"Practice is everything" comes from the Bhagvad Gita - something that my grandma told me everyday....these words do not come from "Lucas".
