Do you have chronic lower back pain? Does it get worse after sitting at your desk or driving? What can start off as a slight nuisance, over time can begin to affect your quality of life.
The most common lumbar spine problems originate in the muscles, ligaments and discs around your lumbar and sacral vertebrae L4, L5, and S1. A disc bulge or nerve compression in this area, can also cause pain or numbness in your legs.
How to fix it? Pain killers will only mask the problem and the best approach to healing is three-pronged, through strengthening, balancing and flexibility practices. The three stretches in this video are a good place to start - they will help to give you some temporary relief and set you on the path to healing.

DISCLAIMER - Please do not use this video to diagnose or treat a severe injury. In all cases, you should check with a trusted healthcare provider before starting any self-care routine.
    ANATOMY
The geographically low position of your lumbar spine, compared with its wide range of motion can cause problems where your lumbar and sacral vertebrae meet - your L4, L5 and S1. Together with soft tissues, nerves and intervertebral discs, this area of your back is responsible for helping to support your upper body, allowing you to bend, flex and extend in different directions.
Key muscles that can lead to lower back pain when injured or strained include your QL muscles, erector spinae, lats and obliques. They all play a crucial role in supporting your spine and allowing you to move your body freely. Muscle injuries heal quicker than ligament and disc problems.
    COMMON PROBLEMS
    1) Muscle strain
    2) Ligament injury
    3) Disc compression
    WHEN MIGHT YOU FEEL PAIN?
    *After sitting at a desk
    *After driving
    *When bending forward
    *When you cough or sneeze
    BEST PRACTICES
These stretches assume you’re already in pain, so the approach is very gentle. As weeks and months go by you’ll probably want to up the level of intensity and move on to some stronger poses.
    TIPS DURING HEALING
    *Minimize shear forces
*No sudden or sharp bending movements
    *No aggressive cycling or running
*Try not to sit for long periods of time
    3 STRETCHES WE'LL LEARN
    1) Standing Psoas Lunge
    2) Zombie Crawl
    3) L-Fold

I have arthritis/DDD of the spine with spurs and bulging (maybe hemorrhaging at this point). I can attest to these stretches helping a LOT! These are things my DO recommended as well. Said tight hips and not ever bending back (hunching forward) all day makes this sort of thing much worse.
I’m not in strong pain meds yet and would like to stay off until I can’t handle it any more. Chronic pain is no joke and I’ll take relief wherever I can get it!

This is brilliant and wonderful! Years ago, I was literally struck by a Pick-up Truck that was backing up & speeding to grab a Parking spot, while I stood with my back toward him, attempting to hail a taxi. No Teacher or Provider has ever explained the REASONS and SOLUTIONS for PAIN from Spinal Injuries (such as mine) or my herniated, bulging discs, in such smart, yet laymen's terms - as you do here. So Thank You. The Muscular Injuries you speak of make total sense as well. I was told I had some "Muscle Collapse" too. I am VERY Blessed and Thankful to be walking!

I had a magical L4-L5 laminectomy in India in 2008. I'm a walking miracle. No pins, no ground cadaver bones, no painkillers. Stretching exercises necessary and certain moves are just not good. Bend your knees, learn how to get in and out of the car correctly, don't twist from the waist, and if it's too heavy, don't pick it up.

Honestly you are so so so much better than the endless "master yoga practitioners" online. I have been an athlete and I'm a dance pro with college education in anatomy and physiology and I was raised by a physical therapist.
It's so refreshing to see a video that is thorough, but not overly academic, while still being grounded in science instead of mysticism. Ancient wisdom is antiquated compared to what we can draw upon today, utilizing the best of all knowledge that has come before and since.
Many of my dance students come to me with injuries/imbalances and explain to them the stretching, strengthening, and rest they need to do in order to heal and recover range of motion/corrective imbalances etc.
It's just a delight to see somebody who's intelligent and also a good communicator. You can deliver quality informational, while still not talking over them as well as be engaging.
    Well done 👍 👏

I've found that mornings I am very stiff so I start with Child's Pose, then do one of these here and also a deep squat. That seems to sort my back out nicely. Also, weirdly, doing crunches in the morning helps, i.e. bringing my back off of the ground while tensing stomach muscles. I am also trying harder mattresses, or toppers, because it is really like the period 5-8 AM in the morning that gets my back all stiff lying in bed. During the day, I'm fine. Hello Yogabody, congratulations for your important work. People usually refer your videos because they need some kind of cure or even create a daily routine for exercise and well-being. I’ll go beyond this as I’m grateful for your explanations on the problem you refereeing too - I’d say that your explanations are more clear, effective and scientific than human anatomy classes. Thank you! I’m 55 yo and as a scientist, I pass around 6 hours per day sitting in chair, using computational systems. I do not want this anymore. I’ve just started to work on foot. It seems weird but this has improved my work as I can stimulate parts of my body whenever I want. My question is about the lumbar region, on foot working on computer helps to fortify this region?

I recently started lap swimming thinking it would be a risk free way to exercise..leave it to me to mess it up! I don't have any history of back problems but was hit by a vague but painful feeling around my right hip wrapping around to my lower/mid back that floated depending on which direction I reached or in bed, put pressure on. It was painful to try and turn over in bed. No chronic hip injuries either..so your explanation about the muscles causing the problem makes sense. Either because of bad form, overuse, or bad alignment something was off. As you said, being in pain made these exercises a little uncomfortable but having the wall, chair and floor for support made it doable. I like that you actually do the timer and pose during your video. I did feel movement in all three exercises so I am motivated to try it again in the morning. Thank you.

I consider myself an expert stretcher. This does not mean I do not get pain\discomfort every now and then. Right today I have a tightness in the band of tendons on my left hip. I have been rolling it out on a hardball and my foam roller. But the first stretch\lunge, hits the spot pretty well..the foot out to the side is a slight change from the Yoga stretch known as the warrior pose or an upper lunge. So kudos to the master who has taught another master and many blessings to you!

Excellent video. I'm a yoga teacher in training and have a lot wrong with my spine, particularly the lumbar region. Can't wait to do these poses as I've found that yoga is the only thing that gives me enough pain relief. Much appreciated 🧘🏼‍♀️

Lunge stretch. Absolutely amazing. Nothing has worked so well for me in the past. I'm only at 30sec for the moment without a wall, but I'll get to a minute 💪🏼😅 Can't lie on my front just now, due to recent rib breaks. But I'll try asap. Many thanks for your videos 👌🏼🤝🏼👍🏻
