  • DC Comics' new status quo is every hero and some villains are now a part of The Justice League. The team is already so big it has gone off the rails. DC names 10 titles fans need to read to keep up with the exploits of their premiere superhero team. Not only is JLU and the solo titles part of this. But many unnecessary tie-in books that serve no purpose but to make the heroes and teams feel small. Wes explains why he believes Justice League Unlimited is already taking up far too much real-estate in the DC-Prime Universe. DC Comics' Justice League has gone off the rails!

Justice League Unlimited cartoon had a giant Justice league, but in the end only main core was shown, plus sometimes a few background ones were shown. Because there were 2 many.
What they should do is split the groups up. Like 1 in USA, 1 in Europe, 1 in Asia, 1 in space, 1 in South America, 1 in Africa, 1 for magic, 1 for middle East, etc. That is only way the everyone in JL can work, there is waaaaay 2 many characters in the team.

But I think it also has a point where it backfires. I.e. I read comics digitally. Sometimes I just binge read a comic book series, but series that force me to find other books are the fastest way to make me stop reading a series as it interrupts the flow to an extreme. It may boost sales today, but it may end up with being a book that vanishes into the unknown, quite opposed to how some or the old runs get found and bought by new readers all the time.

    • @mattfischer7140
      @mattfischer7140 2 дні тому +3

Luthor took control of the satellite and fired on Cadmus to frame the league. Waller got mad and sent everything Cadmus had to fight the league. Lex did all this to not only frame the league but to download himself into a duplicate of Amazo, who In The cartoon universe is immortal. Batman proves their innocence and the league and Waller stopped Lex, who then found out brainiac was living and hiding inside of him and was the real reason he wanted to take control of Amazon body double. Then the Flash killed Brainiac and beat him out of lex’s body and faded into the speed force. Superman almost killed Lex but didn't and the league formed a human chain to pull Wally back to Earth.

The Titans have had a really abusive relationship with the Justice League for a long time. It seems that editorial really wants to make it clear to readers what the pecking order is. I kind of wonder if it is some form of petty retaliation for the original generation of sidekicks outgrowing their subordinate roles back in the 80s.
I totally agree that Green Lantern characters feel like they should be bigger than Earth superhero culture. I recall seeing a Justice League story a while ago where Lex Luthor had recruited a new Legion of Doom, and I just couldn't get over how odd it seemed for a character like Sinestro to be there.

I understand your dissatisfaction with the series, although it does sound you're coming from a place of hate since you repeatedly said you hate Mark waid because of x, y, or z. Comparmentalizing your hate from someone's work is key. It has a good mystery surrounding the Inferno, the mysterious mole lurking in the watchtower, Martian manhunt going awol. Idk, it all dovetails nicely.

This like when everyone in Marvel got thrown into the Avengers pool, or when every mutant was an X-Man. Both those books started to feel pointless because they didn't have the stories for a lot of the team, so they were just glorified cameos. Also, shoving heroes together in books just doesn't feel special anymore since it's done every other issue to prop up sales.

Yeah hard to take commentary seriously here when you don't bother to actually read the Justice League book. All I will say is the interest is there in the title as it is selling. Wes overstates things here too. Also the concept of it is behind the idea of them being caught completely flat footed by Waller in Absolute Power. Which did not suck either. In fact that was too short, it should been five issues and could have really delved more into some angles of the story. And YOU DO NOT NEED to read the titles mentioned to enjoy the Justice League either. The concept here also harkens back to the animated show, which never got this big, but the concept intrigues people as many watched the animated show. The book is written well. Mark Waid's talents are just too good for him to write something like this poorly. You don't like the concept? Fine. And I will admit it's a juggling act to keep the book focused. But its good, better then wasting time with the Titans series which is dead in the water. My last comment...go get a copy and read it. Judge for yourself, because seeing as how I have been at this longer, I have read far worse then this series of Justice League. Oh...go read Green Lantern...its wonderful. That I absolutely agree with. WTF20.

I wonder if the grand plan is to "Authority" the Justice League. Everything described sounds similar in scope to the time Authority took over and became the protectors of the world. This never ends well. It worked in the JLU cartoon because it was there because the stories had to stay simple with the 22 minute running time and the necessary requirement to return to an equilibrium. Waid and DC won't be able to help themselves.

Ultimately the writer makes the book. People love to wack on Alan Moore for Watchmen, but it showed how removing the names and iconic costumes from a couple of mid level heroes doesn’t make the book bad. Why? Because it’s the story told, way more so than the heroes used. That’s why Invincible is successful, though it doesn’t feature a single hero from Marvel or DC.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s cool to have great characters in cool stories, but there is a point where a lack in writing quality and editorial oversight quality simply can‘t be outweighed by the name on the cover.
I have a feeling that the overall quality in writing diminished, all while the amount of books printed increased. That’s a bad development as it may have been the business model to sell ok writing with great established characters, but for that it needs (a) good writers to pull in readers and (b) enough ok writers to better hide the total duds. Once the risk of books being total duds becomes too great, the whole business model falls apart imo.

there are way too many characters in DC now but the artists don't draw the backgrounds or the characters very well. the background should be penciled first, with the characters second. that way the characters look like they are in a place, as opposed to standing out in blurs of color. When you get a big character spread, with the exception of Gary Frank's work on Doomsday Clock (both parts), you get either a blurred background or less detail on any character in the mid ground or background.

I'm confused Wes, are you reading Justice League Unlimited or not? I have heard your dislike of Mark Waid's views to the point that you are no longer reading his books. But how can you think critically on something you are not actively reading?
You start on about how the JLU team does not work with reformed villains on the team. And you liked the Titans issue with Killer Frost on the Justice League causing conflict in a well told one and done story. Doesn't that show it can work because it is causing conflict in an interesting way? I believe all great superhero teams should have morally grey characters or characters with major differences of opinion on how to help people, save the day, and defeat the bad guys. Isn't this why Jason Aaron's run of TMNT is so awesome (other than the great art) 6 issues in?
Then you mention how several All-In titles are making a number of references to the new unlimited Justice League and the Watchtower as if it is a bad thing. Remember this is DC comics, where they generally have trouble making ongoing titles feel like they are truly in a shared universe. This JLU/Watchtower tie-in is an easy way to make ongoings feel more shared. Do I have to read every issue that is telling a relevant story across the JLU/Watchtower sandbox? Hell no. I know the creators and basic story of the new Question series. I am staying far away and I don't feel like I am missing anything whatsoever. I feel the same way about the Metamorpho series and the Challengers of the Unknown series. Why not give DC credit for trying to appease both the shared universe fans and the fans of specific characters and teams only? Other than the titles I mentioned above, I am reading most of the other titles that supposedly tie into the Justice League. And I really don't see a need to read all of them to understand one ongoing or another.
Can't we just enjoy the fact that:
    1. We have an ongoing Justice League series with a competent writer and a competent artist.
    2. DC is trying to make it feel like a shared universe.
    3. We do not have a major event stopping every ongoing in the line from telling their own story.
    4. DC is not twisting your arm to follow every title that talks about JLU.
    5. Believe it or not, I can read and clearly understand an ongoing that mentions the JLU without feeling compelled to understand how it relates to the JLU book and the major story that book is trying to tell.

    @davidgantenbein9362 2 дні тому

The way a big team works is by assigning tasks/stories to a subset of the heroes and also by doing the old trick with having side threats building up during a main story. Having 20+ characters within a single threat/challenge is taxing the reader and can make it either boring or distracting. So any huge cast will be condensed to a small cast by a successful writer.
The trick to establish a returning title and make jumping on board easy is to avoid cross reading as much as possible and instead to jump into the action right from the get go. It’s ok to market „here you can find more action with xyz“ marketing at the end of a book, but forcing readers to start three instead of one new series will make them leave rather fast. A series must be self-containing to keep readers engaged, the habit of DC/Marvel to not have important events within the actual series is among the chief reasons I abandon their books.

And with mojority of new human lanterns being black, Milestone characters just don't talk to them... they have a special blackness?) i know i gonna regret it, but where is NAOMI .... they placed big chips on Bendis creation, aka "PowerHouse" and boom she suddenly forgotten and we getting only stories about Dyke+Batwing, do Batfamily getting special side squad? Personaly for me 4 Robins it's already too much, tim must be forgotten

0:03 It was almost two years.
0:07 It was Justice League 75 (aka Death of the Justice League), not Justice League 50.
0:13 Which started good for the first two issues before it sucked entirely.
0:17 In which Tom Taylor’s Titans run became a retread of the Wolfman/Perez New Teen Titans run, where the first half is a prelude to Beast World while the second half is another evil Raven subplot.
0:32 Like Knight Terrors (which was unnecessary), Beast World (which was good), and Absolute Power (which was great).
0:38 I enjoyed it so far; it’s great.
1:14 Which makes sense because Killer Frost was part of Batman’s Justice League during the Rebirth Justice League of America run.
    2:32 They’re scanner cards.
2:42 As shown in the first issue of his series written by Jeremy Adams.
    4:28 Same here.
    4:46 It really is.
5:07 I enjoyed it so far; it’s great!
7:08 I enjoyed it so far; however, the missed opportunity should’ve shown Ted Kord telling Renee that he’s proud of her for protecting the Question legacy and that he knew the original Question Vic Sage since his Charleston Comics years in the late ‘60s. Also, I assume that future issues would deal with Renee and the rest of the superhero community defeating Cyborg Superman and freeing the superheroes from his control.
7:18 Which is fine because us wanting to see what rooms the new Watchtower has.
7:25 I read it; I enjoyed it so far. Also, it’s two issues into the latest series, unless you’re talking about the previous comics.
    8:20 I disagree.
    8:25 Same here.
    8:40 I don’t think so.
    9:25 Agreed.

But you know what's so funny is the title that might need some Justice League interference I don't know it's a title call Tom King's Wonder Woman have you noticed how every book is referenced but nobody reference any of the bull crap that Wonder Woman is going through especially when she show up in other books it's like the outlaw event is in its own pocket universe or something. I mean hell she's in the just league unlimited book and she's not even referring to anything that happened in her own book It's baffling. And then I don't like the fact that we're about to get we are yesterday crossover event Why are you doing a justly unlimited title crossover with Batman Superman worlds finest which is a book that's supposed to be taking place in the past It's dumb like we're doing too much You got the challenges on known you got question watchtower all along you got black lightning you got Superman Aquaman and then actually you have that other book too that came out DC comic books on the rise of the power company That's also tied to the Justice League Unlimited series as well and then of course you got Titans It's just ridiculous I'm not saying some of these titles shouldn't affect the other books or reference them but Jesus Christ
