Kidnapped by the IRA - 1983 Kidnap & Murder - RTÉ Troubles Documentary 2023
In 1983, the IRA kidnapped British supermarket executive Don Tidey near his Dublin home. This triggered an unprecedented response from Irish law enforcement, with a joint operation involving the police and the Irish armed forces. The extensive manhunt marked a historic moment of cooperation between the two organisations.
Over the course of three weeks, the search led to dense woodland in County Leitrim. Tragically, the operation concluded with a double fatality: the loss of army Private Patrick Kelly and Garda recruit Gary Sheehan.
Retired Sergeant Major PJ Higgins, who served in the Irish Defence Forces, takes us back to the tumultuous search. Four decades later, he reflects on the mistakes that marred the rescue mission, leading to a fatal shootout and the tragic loss of his colleague, Patrick.
Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant Cyril Meehan of the Irish police remembers the sorrowful day of his friend Gary Kelly's death.
Retired Detective Inspector Edwin Handcock provides insights into the subsequent investigation. In addition, Private Kelly's son, David, shares the enduring impact of his father's death and his unrelenting pursuit of justice.

The documentary appears to forget the two civilians shot by the army and Garda during the search. Big detail to leave out
@paddyleblanc I don't have there names to hand. One of them was seriously wounded in Aughavas. The other was shot in Derrada. Neither having any connection to the kidnapping.
Very big detail indeed…shows the terrible planning of the search.
'Lucky' Grew didn't a grip of Tidey; a whole other level of ruthless. Didn't have good year on the kidnapping front, the IRA.
For anyone from UK or other countries that might of gotten confused , Óglaigh na hÉireann (volunteers of Ireland) , is the name of the official Army of Ireland , but it is also what the Provisional IRA called themselves.

The thing that sticks with me regarding the Troubles was the sheer level of bitterness exercised by all sides of the conflict. The most heinous and vile behavior was championed as patriotic. Very sad that it still continues today.

The thing about the troubles when compared to the war for independence
The troubles was mainly a war driven and based around hate. It was also based around family feuds
The real war was Provos against uvf and uda and it was solely to inflict as much pain on the opposition.

I never realised how dangerous Ireland was until i started watching the internet on the troubles worse than some wars abroad😮
As someone who was there it was a complete balls of an operation operation, I can tell ya that most soldiers were prepared and we took it seriously, the Guards especially the special branch they were so unprofessional, the Branch walking around with Uzis looking like terrorists, on Garda and Army checkpoints the Branch just sped right tru them even at night they'd turn off the car lights and put the boot to the floor, searching out houses and sheds the guards just walked tru them and out the far side without waiting for us it was like they were out looking for mushrooms totally oblivious to what cud of happened and when it did happen none of us in green were surprised its just luck that only 2 were killed
The special branch we’re just terrorists and criminals infiltrated by extreme loyalists ideology
What Brits don’t understand about and mainly Northern Ireland is they think the loyalists are the same as in Britain.
These are a extreme group built by hate the same for the republicans in the north compared to us in the republic.
When it came to the soldiers deployed during the troubles they didn’t even know what they we’re getting into. Ira in the north are socialists some borderline communist the loyalist groups like the commandos the uvf or uda have fascist and Nazi elements.
It’s the Tory government that done this. They funded these groups and sent young British soldiers into the mess for their own Benefit

The thing that always has me questioning "freedom fighter organizations" actual loyalty and dedication to a cause are actions like these. 35:15 Putting the cart before the horse, troops were deployed because of Republican political violence, they weren't the cause of it.
The British Army was deployed to protect Catholics from attacks. Republicans or I assume you mean the IRA was non existent at the time.
True
@@ATroubledLand Yes, the troops were initially deployed to stop the Irish from being driven out of Ulster by the Ulster Scots in ethnic based rioting; when that was stopped they stayed to counter Irish Republican revolutionary paramilitarism which appeared soon afterwards hell-bent on mayhem.
@@Horizon344 Which documentary or books are you reading this narrative from, as it goes against everything I have seen and read. The IRA in its then state was non existant. The spark that lit the bonfire between the British Army and the IRA was an order to search Catholic houses for weapons which lead to serious rioting and many deaths. Let me pull up this recent documentary for you here : ua-cam.com/video/qZotRAlMp4k/v-deo.html

Amazing how hard the southern government collaborated with the British government to keep Britain in full control of 6 north eastern counties of Ireland and uphold the partition of Ireland, its for this reason the south had even more censorship of current events and Irish history for its people, one only has to look at its pitiful independence celebrations, anywhere else in the world it would be a huge celebratory event but because of awkward unresolved issues, who fought and won these rights and those who now betrayed them supported by the RC Church and acted to bury those ideas and who now worked harder to keep partition. its very cheap and very grubby.. This would be like the West German government working alongside the USSR to keep Germans under the control of the Soviets. History in time will look at this period with deep shame, not just the discrimination and bigotry Irish people in the north lived under but that many southern politicians didn't just do anything but that they did whatever the British asked of them.
Well said I think the brits still control the free state in the background
True I don't recall any Irish leader in Dublin criticizing strongly during the 1970 s 1980 s 1990 s of London British PM

SAS regiment currently being investigated for their deliberate killing of civilians in Afghanistan. One unit reportedly killed around 80 unarmed civilians (this includes people captured by the regiment).
Even British soldiers admit to the professionalism of the Provisionals on various operations. In south Armagh alone, the Provisionals units there had field craft skills just as drilled and fine tuned as anything in the Brit army. Hence why British special forces were unable to mount any successful ambushes over a 19/20 year period, that's the bulk of the conflict.
Also, criminals don't go on hunger strike 🙄
@tofu-warrior7948 however the Provisonal IRA surrendered handed in their weapons and in 2023 their stated objective of a United Socialist Ireland looks further off than ever 🤔
I'm also going to remind you that the Republican movement is as capable of propaganda as any official government. Criminals don't go hunger strike?
