Moore had peak winds of 300 MPH, now you'd think that it's only 50 MPH more than this test, however, the energy of things hitting it, including the energy of the air itself, rises exponentially with velocity squared. So it's a heck of a lot more and why the EF scale from an EF2 to EF5 is only about a 130 MPH difference, but the diff of roof damage vs bending steel.
the TIV 2 may be able to handle the 250 mph winds in an EF5 but the #1 killer in tornadoes isn't the winds, it's being impaled by debris. and with all kinds of debris that would be flying through the air at 200+ mph like missiles could penetrate the bulletproof Lexan windows and kill any unfortunate soul sitting on the other side of them
It's going to take more than a 2x4 to punch through those windows. The windows are bullet proof. A rifle round travels at over 2500 feet per second, has a shape optimized for penetration, and is comprised of lead and copper. A 2x4, while certainly heavier, would be traveling slower, is blunt with no penetration advantage, and would probably shatter on impact because it is comprised of wood. It would take a steel pole traveling at over 300 mph to have a chance at busting through those windows. Remember, each of them is 2 inch thick polycarbonate. Tiv's greatest enemy in a twister isn't the debris, it's the wind. The problem with going into an F5 is that the winds would be exerting so much pressure on Tiv that it could cause the mantling points of the spikes to fail, which would cause Tiv to slide across the ground and potentially topple. This is why Dominator 1 and 2 can't go into anything higher than a mid F3, the winds would push them around too much, like what happens to Dominator 2 in this episode.
@@RojoFern See, im not even worried about the spike hard points failing. Id be most worried about the terrain they deploy on. The rear wheels are not covered by the skirts like the dominators are. I would have lived to see this test repeated with both vehicles in profile on the side of a ditch like they are somewhat frequently parked. If dominator were to dip down a ditch while sliding like that it would lift the skirt and allow the wind underneath to possibly lift and likely roll them. Tiv on the other hand doesnt have protection at those rear wheels which could allow wind under that skirt in profile.
