Franz Klammer 1976 Innsbruck Olympic Gold Medal run. Live on TV. I was a little kid laughing for joy. One of the greatest wins in the history of the Olympics. Along with the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” US Hockey team’s - all college kids - win over the most formidable pros on earth. Franz was one of my boyhood heroes. No one road the raggedy edge like Klammer. A go for broke thing of beauty and joy. Dominated 4 years of World Cup downhill. Thanks Deb! Damn if skiing/riding aren’t the greatest sports on earth.

This video brought the biggest smile to me face. I’m from Carinthia/Austria, like Franz Klammer. When I was little my whole family was glued to the TV every time he was racing. He was such a hero to all of us. I now have a family in NC and haven’t seen or heard from Franz Klammer in almost 40 years. How awesome to see that he is still just as cool as ever!! Thanks for this video-it brought back such wonderful childhood memories, and it made my day! 😃👏🏻⛷ 🇦🇹

Franz Klammer was my hero as a small boy. Always the most exciting skiier to watch with poles and skis in all directions but fearless and fast as the wind. Great to see that he's still in fine shape, even if he's not as wild as once he was! Salut!

Cool comment...I am the same as you, though I grew up in Munich but I spent many holidays in Kaernten near Villach and also skied a lot in Austria. I do not follow ski racing anymore but in the 70s I was glued to the TV and admired racers like Franz, Hansi,, Ingemar, Rosi. Wish I could go back in time LOL

Franz was my first ever star and hero. I was just 12 years old and was sitting at home with a broken leg after my first skiing holiday in my life. I was so in love with this new sport (coming from a land with no mountains - Belgium) that I started to watch the races on German television. Then a month later came the Olympics and of course that fantastic race of him. What a guy. I would still be starstruck if I would to sit with him on the chairlift like you did here.

I am 73 years old and still remember Franz Klammer’s Olympic downhill run when he almost lost control but turned it a Gold Medal time. It was great to watch him ski and crank out those short radius turns on GS skis. I think we all expected Bodie Miller to lay them over at high edge angles but you got to love how Franz can make a ski turn. It definitely is the craftsman not the tool. Thanks for another great season of ski videos.

I had my photo taken with FK when I was just 13 on my first ever ski trip to Italy way back in 1979. It was an experience I have treasured all my life. I always remember my father relating tales of watching FK on ski Sunday on BBC 1. Franz so so relaxed in his downhill racing his calf muscles would flap in the breeze. I am fairly sure he was competing in a slalom event, managed to lose a ski and completed the course on one ski. As you do!

Fun, thank you. I skied with Franz at Alpine Meadows, that's him, always turning. Great Guy. And so cool to see all the old skis behind you in the opening. The Ski, Pre 1200, K2 4?? Olin Mark 4, Red Sleds, no Rossi 4S ? We used to race the (old) tram on Gun Barrel, Plake was swinging 215 Red Sleds, while we all had soft 185's. Then at the bottom of the hill Plake would do perfect ballet moves, while wearing 3 different color polo shirts, layering collars up, then of course rocking the hawk, good times. Im still banging at 64, I posted a vid of Big Bear. Thanks for the memories. Peace.

My husband rode 450 A class in motocross growing up, learned how to ski in middle school, and learned to carve and dragging his elbows in high school. He said that riding dirt bikes helped him develop his skiing style because of the similar body mechanics and familiarity with leaning over while riding out the momentum. How fun 😝

The retired life can limit the need for turns employing athletic performance. Not everyone can make turns like Bode and Franz, but everyone can choose to make turns shaped liked the turns made by Bode or Franz. Not everyone can ski as fast as Bode or Franz, but everyone can ski the slow line fast. Skiing is so much more than style on groomed snow and so was your “aprez-golf” treat. Thank you.

  • @Landwy1

I think the difference between Bode and Franz is simply core strength and flexibility. They are both on top of the skis and positioned in a good stance. For us senior types doing squats and dead lifts can drastically improve our core strength. Flexibility is a challenge as we age and is a never ending battle. Getting the skis to snap out of a turn is more difficult as we age too.
I know Franz learned the classic wedeln technique, which Bode probably was never exposed to. For groomers the basics are: put the skis on the edge and pressure them through out the turn. The skis sidecut, length, and stiffness; with edging and pressure will determine the radius of the turn. Because Franz is skiing in such a narrow stance, the angulation is therefore limited as the skis cannot get a high edge angle.
For skiers still learning about angulation (and inclination) the following is a good exercise. On a flat area, narrow your stance and try to put the skis on edge by moving your knees (actually the hips since knees cannot move very much laterally). Now try the same thing in a wide stance. It will be much easier to get the skis on edge.
Repeat with forward stance, a balanced stance, and then a "sitback stance." The in "the center" balanced stance allows for the highest edge angles. Many people have seen Bode coming out of a turn in a setback stance. Bode can get away with this because his backward stance will straighten out the turn, which a racer wants to do (i.e. not overturn). However, very few skiers have Bode's stomach muscle strength that pulls his upper Body forward again for the start of a new turn and athleticism. Marcel Hirscher can do this as well.
Watching Mikaela Shiffrin's style where she is almost always in a balance athletic stance is probably the technique for us mere mortals to use.
Just remember that having fun on the mountain is what is all about. Just because you have a different technique doesn't mean you are a lesser skier. Stein Erikson, Hansi Hinterseer, and Franz Klammer have a technique that is just beautiful to watch when they free ski but is not used much these days.

Two of the most incredible persons on skis. When I first saw Bode Miller in a downhill race I knew he was something special, downhill skiers usually hold on, Miller 'climbs' the track to get a better line at a hundred miles an hour. Mindblowing.

Klammer is showing what skiing is about, gentle elegance. That's the way it is done.

Best video! Bode and franz. Wow!
You can really hear the tech bode was talking about through his turns.
The snow jibbered, but his ski bit. Wow!
I usually lose an edge on sugary ice... it scoops out... weird feeling. Like a rail vanished below my feet.

This video just popped up in my UA-cam feed. So glad I found it! I remember watching your gold medal win in Sarajevo when I was a young teenager in 1984 (between you, Bill Johnson, and Phil Mahre, that has to be about the best performance of a U.S. ski team at an Olympics). Seeing you ski with two other legends was such fun.

Legends,--- Klammer, Miller, and Taos Ski Valley--- Great Video. I watched Klammer's ultimate Olympic Downhill run, Innsbrook 76, at the Sierra Del Sol in TSV .
