I find it difficult to compare skiers from different eras. The material has changed and evolved. Slope preparation is currently different and is also difficult to compare. There is no question that there have been many outstanding personalities who have inspired many people through skiing. They had a charisma that was not only defined by fame and success.
Very shocked five time overall WC champion Marc Giradelli did not make the list. Same with four time overall champ Pirmin Zurbriggen. In addition to being second and third, respectively, in number of overall World Cup titles, both were great all-around skiers, with wins in every Alpine discipline over the course of their careers (with the exception of Parallel, which was not run during their careers). None of the other Men who have won at least three World Cup titles have won in every event that was competed in their careers. Hirscher, in the lead with 8 titles, never won a downhill or combined event. Gustav Theoni, tied third with Zurbriggen, never won a downhill. Phil Mahre and Stenmark, both tied with three titles, never won downhills or super-G (super-G being added as an event right near the end of their careers).
Just posted my comment with the exactly same thoughts and found yours. Zurbriggen was something like Pete Sampras of tennis, not including him is a very odd choice and for me personally an offense. The same goes for arguably the most versatile skier of all time Marc Girardelli. All skiers in the list are amazing, but these two giants simply must not be omitted.
I'm from the Netherlands so I have no dog in this fight but Aamodt's combined career total of twenty World Championship and Olympic medals is an all-time best. He is the second-youngest male alpine skier to win an Olympic gold medal (age 20 in 1992; Toni Sailer was two months younger in 1956). Until 2014, he was also the oldest alpine skier to win an Olympic gold medal. For almost six years, Aamodt led the all-time Marathon World Cup ranking, with a total of 13,252 points. By winning the super-G race at the 2006 Olympics, Aamodt became the first male alpine skier to win four gold medals in the Olympics. If you win the world championship in any sport your considered the best, and all the rest of the world cares about is the Olympics. Aamodt exceeded in both AND he mastered the whole mountain, skiing every alpine discipline, that you don't see today. I think it's safe to say that Aamodt deserves his position. Btw, Ingmar Stenmark has repeatedly shared his admiration for Aamodt - and visa versa.

What about Pirmin Zurbriggen with 89 podiums, his world champion titles, his Olympic gold medal and all the big globe trophies for wining the overall world cup ranking quite a few times?
I understand not including active athletes completely because it will likely make the video outdated immediately, but Zurbriggen is an absolute necessity
If Hermann hadnt have his motorcycle accident, he would have been on the first place similar to stenmark or even better. He was such an extraordinary skier.
Lasse Kjus did something I don't think will be repeated ever in alpine skiing. In the Vail world championship in 99, he got a medal in all 5 events. 3 silver and 2 gold medals. Gold in Super G and Giant slalom, silver in the downhill, combined and slalom. Still can't believe he pulled that off....;-)

my brother and I were competing at park city long ago in a FIS sanctioned SL ,GS. we were watching a skier coming down towards the starting hut for the GS and remarked how good he was skiing with a different style but we thought he could maybe win the race. to our astonishment it was Stein Erickson coming to fore- run the race. he had won a olympic gold medal in GS way back in the 1950's. !! and still carving rock solid turns. the best racers had just come back from WC races placing in the top 10.

Can you justify why Gustav Thoeni or Karl Schranz not? Thoeni won World Cups in 71, 72, 73 and 75 ( dramatic finish against Stenmark). Won also 3 Olympic medals an 7 World championship medals, of this 5 gold. His technical skill in GS and GSL was superb for his time. Probably you are to young to evaluate that.
Such Rock solid technique...not just as a racer but overall...good for anywhere, and all conditions on the mountain, not just in the gates. Phil Mahre too. You can see this solid technique carried over onto other terrain by Scott Schmidt.

Zurbriggen and Giardelli not being on here is ridiculous and having Bide at number 10 is also…..he completely and single handedly changed the line and technical approach with equipment to the sport
Hirscher should obviously be #1 or #2. Also, Zurbriggen and Girardelli should both make the list, perhaps even top five. Apart from that, not too shabby. Odermatt could be in the top ten after this season IMO.
Who did this ranking? Did he ever watch ski competitions for the past 40 years?Aside from Stenmark, Klammer and Killy, you are totally off my friend...
I think he is right. Otherwise call it the greatest downhiller or slalom or GS skier. A great Alpine skier should be able to do it in all the disciplines.
Only Marcel Hirscher is the best. The guy won the World Cup 8 times, was a multiple world champion and a 2-time Olympic champion. What more could you want.
Nice list, but Tomba's record is inaccurate. He won three Olympic gold medals, two World Championships, four World Cup titles in slalom, four in giant slalom, and one overall World Cup title.
Interesting subject. Of the three Norwegian included, only Svindal clearly belongs. The other two (Lasse Kjus and Aamodt) are clearly Norwegian homer choices. The glaring omission is Pirmin Zurbriggen. Toni Seiler from the 1950s is from an era impossible to truly consider within modern skiing.
What are the arguments to rank this way? Number of victories? Zurbriggen (won in all disciplines), Cuche (record of victories in Kitzbuehl), Girardelli? It seems that this ranking is based on subjectivity. Fine for me, but change the title of the video then.
Was this list made by a Norwegian? I am Norwegian and i have to say that Pirmin should be in the top five on this list! No discussion. Girardelli top ten aswell. Kudos, though for putting Lasse Kjus up there. He competed in all events in Vail 1999 and made it top two in every event. Had a lot of health problems ruining many seasons but had a ‘feeling’ that is hard to describe. (Both Kjus and Aamodt have no doubt Stenmark was the greatest ever, btw). I am to young to know about Killy and Thoeni.. Interesting discussion, though! I bet Odermatt will be remembered as one of the greats! Peace from Norway✌️
Weird that Aamodt and Kjus get so much flak. Clearly the most versatile/complete alpinists on this lists, which otherwise consist mostly of specialists(hence they won overall WC many times, most-winning olympians of all time etc)
Totally agree. And Aamodt got by far most top10s ever, and there's more races now too. Superb overall and really impacted the sport. Especially in olympics and wc
Such classifications are perforce arbitrary, but this one is extravagant. I argue the label greatest *skiers* (not downhill or technical specialists) should be for the few ones who won races in all the disciplines. My own number 1 among those few, is Zurbriggen. Girardelli won one more Cup because he was active longer, but Zurbriggen had the sheer class that left you in awe. Bode Miller is close, with Thoeni and very few others.
To create such a list, clear objective criteria are needed: time period that is counted, number of victories in the overall World Cup, number of overall victories in discipline World Cups, number of World Cup victories per discipline, number of World Cup and Olympic medals per discipline, outstanding performances in one discipline, outstanding performances overall in each discipline. This list should definitely include all World Cup riders who have won at least one race in ALL individual disciplines (downhill, super-G since 1985, giant slalom, slalom): Jean-Claude Killy (without super-G), Marc Girardelli, Pirmin Zurbriggen, Bode Miller, Kjetil André Aamodt and Günther Mader. In addition, all overall World Cup winners with at least 3 large crystal globes in their collection who have not won in all disciplines: Marcel Hirscher, Gustav Thöni, Hermann Maier, Ingemar Stenmark, Phil Maire and Marco Odermatt. In addition, you also have to take into account athletes on this list with outstanding performances in individual disciplines: e.g. Franz Klammer, Aksel Lund Svindal, Beat Feuz, Stefan Eberharter, Didier Cuche, Bode Miller, Lasse Kjus, Michael von Grünigen etc. We already have 12 athletes in the first two categories, and it is very difficult to find objective and fair criteria to remove 2 athletes from this list. One criterion could be: number of World Cup victories achieved in relation to the number of World Cup races held in the respective season. Günther Mader would probably be thrown out of the list, as he has not achieved more than 2 World Cup victories in any individual discipline - apart from the Super-G. Conclusion: I would like to help continue this discussion with objective criteria...
Pirmin Zurbriggen would like a polite word with you! How about making a list of the best skier from every country? I know it'd be difficult for skiing giants like Austria, Switzerland, Norway etc but for Britain it just has to be Dave Ryding!
I would certainly put Zurbriggen and Girardelli on my top ten. The battle of dh vs slalom or gs will go on forever. The combined discipline never worked that out. Stenmark is totally ok as numero uno, Hirscher is my nr 2 and Maier no 3. But then again, we all know that Shiffrin is the boss.
As for norwegians on a top ten list, Aamodt is the one and only. So far. He was a fuckin beautiful skier to watch. Braathen will end up as one of the top ten, hopefully.
Aamodt in 2nd place is not right: he was very good in single important events like Olympic Games, but very few Worldcup victories. Aamodt, Kjus and Klammer above Tomba: no! Where is Zurbriggen?
There are too many great all-rounders to include Klammer. Even he later admitted he mostly won on aggression over technical skill. Once really strong technical downhillers like Podborski and younger Austrians appeared he wasn't competitive. It's ridiculous that Shiffrin isn't on this list.
@@dansprague2Klammer was extremely dominant for three seasons, winning once 10 downhills in a row, often with a lead of one or two seconds. He lost dominance not for technical reasons but psychology, first time after the grave accident of his brother. Among ten skiers I would always include Klammer.
Alexander Zhirov could have been included in this list, but a car accident interrupted both his career and his life... "Zhirov was a wonderful skier. I guess... he was a genius." Ingemar Stenmark.
@@TheLedahosn Your take. Klammer is by many considered the greatest downhill skier. Svindal won all there is to win in speed races, and with his injuries and comebacks, you can argue he really is among the greats
Agree that Stenmark is a league of its own, and also Aamodt has more WCH and OI medals, but Herminator has way more WC podiums. I see him as somekind of underdog. Like Herman Maier who? but when you see his career you can't be unimpressed
Probably should reflect that in the title of the video! This is your take on Top 10 Male Alpine Skiers, but I would argue that Vonn & Shriffin have to be on a list of Top 10 Alpine Skiers that is non-specific to sex @@speedkingz
@@arroe8386 On the women's side it is easy for an outside country (CAN, USA, NZ, SVK, POL, CZE, CRO) to finish in the top 10 standings of a discipline but for the men very, very difficult. How are two female American skiers (Vonn and Shiffrin) the GOAT? When the USA men are so weak? In USA for every 100 super excellent recreational male skiers there are around 8 super excellent recreational female skiers. Skiing for men is way more popular at the highest levels and yet the USA men can't compete in FIS World Cup. In 2022/23 there were 11.6 million active skiers/snowboarders in the USA. That's more than the entire population of AUT. Lol!

The greatest alpine skiers are only those who were able to win in in EVERY disccipline. - So, certrainly no Stenmark, no Maier, no Hirscher etc.
I think you are at the wrong place.
I think he is right. Otherwise call it the greatest downhiller or slalom or GS skier. A great Alpine skier should be able to do it in all the disciplines.
Great video. Fun to watch. Difficult to pick just ten
For sure, some has to be left out, everything just opinions, can argue for both. Thanks
Thanks for clearing
Where Pirmin Zurbriggen?!! Marc Girardelli ?!! Some of those shown here could possibly have their shoes shined! 🙂
Ingemar Stenmark 💪💪💪
Kungen från Tärnaby💪
Takk!
Marc Giradelli? Pirmin Zurbriggen?
My number one is Hermann Maier. His life should be made into a film
All greats but it should of been the top 20 more than 10 true legends .
Wtf is ketjl andre amondt doing on second position?
To create such a list, clear objective criteria are needed: time period that is counted, number of victories in the overall World Cup, number of overall victories in discipline World Cups, number of World Cup victories per discipline, number of World Cup and Olympic medals per discipline, outstanding performances in one discipline, outstanding performances overall in each discipline.
This list should definitely include all World Cup riders who have won at least one race in ALL individual disciplines (downhill, super-G since 1985, giant slalom, slalom):
Jean-Claude Killy (without super-G), Marc Girardelli, Pirmin Zurbriggen, Bode Miller, Kjetil André Aamodt and Günther Mader.
Günther Mader would probably be thrown out of the list,
as he has not achieved more than 2 World Cup victories in any individual discipline - apart from the Super-G.
Conclusion: I would like to help continue this discussion with objective criteria...
Good points. This is pretty much subjective and based on ski-db stats. Maybe i should make a list like you suggested too?
Before I watched the list I made my own. 8 names matched. I think you could make a point for Zurbriggen, Girardelli, Toni Sailer or Zeno Colo.
Herminator No. 1 No Question. Absolut Legend.
Pirmin Zurbriggen would like a polite word with you!
How about making a list of the best skier from every country? I know it'd be difficult for skiing giants like Austria, Switzerland, Norway etc but for Britain it just has to be Dave Ryding!
Haha, good video idea. I'll give it a go, stay tuned
agreed re Stenmark
I question this list but agree Stenmark is #1. If you look at how Killy skied on that equipment it is quite remarkable.
Yeah, retired too soon though
@@speedkingz Aamodt only had 21 wins and Kjus 18. How can you rank them so high?
Stenmark was an easy choice as the top male skier, but I would have loved to see one or two of the real pioneers, like Stein Eriksen!
see my post about Toni Sailer
Hard to define the ten best. But Zurbriggen was a true master. As was Giradelli. Has been said by others. ;-)
Where is Alberto Tomba
He's in there. 4th or 7th dont remember
I have Tomba at 10th.
I know it´s difficult, but I think you forgot in your TopTen Didier Cuche, Karl Schranz, Toni Sailer.
Aamodt in 2nd place is not right: he was very good in single important events like Olympic Games, but very few Worldcup victories. Aamodt, Kjus and Klammer above Tomba: no! Where is Zurbriggen?
Agree to some extent. The best ones performed when it really matters though
What about Tony Sailer with 3 🥇 medals at the 1954 Olympics, the first and one of only two with JC Killy to win all three.
Stenmark - undisputed GOAT!
I'll dispute that any day
Alexander Zhirov could have been included in this list, but a car accident interrupted both his career and his life...
"Zhirov was a wonderful skier. I guess... he was a genius." Ingemar Stenmark.
Wow, thanks
Rudolf Nierlich
Stephan Eberharter
Marc Girardelli
Pirmin Zurbriggen
Michael von Grünigen
It shows that there have been some amazing skiers when Pirmin Zurbriggen isn't even in the top 10.
Not even one Swiss racer??? ⛷️🇨🇭
Sadly. Many good ones. Cuche maybe?
@@speedkingzzurbriggen > Kjus, Klammer, Aamodt, Svindal
Cuche ,von Grùningen,Zurbriggen have to be on that list;and I am Austrian
Klammer and Svindal should not be on that list.
Guenther Mader,Giradelli also won in all 5 disciplines
@@TheLedahosn Your take. Klammer is by many considered the greatest downhill skier. Svindal won all there is to win in speed races, and with his injuries and comebacks, you can argue he really is among the greats
Obviously....you are a ski fan. Only fan. And Norwegian fan.
Ridicolo, fatto chiaramente da norvegesi. Escludere girardelli, thoeni, zurbriggen, colo', ....ridicolo
the Herminator should be No.1 on your list.
Aah, dont agree, but good pick
Agree that Stenmark is a league of its own, and also Aamodt has more WCH and OI medals, but Herminator has way more WC podiums. I see him as somekind of underdog. Like Herman Maier who? but when you see his career you can't be unimpressed
Hmph. No mention of Lindsey Vonn (who almost dethroned Stenmark), or Mikaela Shiffrin (who actually dethroned him)? Okaaaaay...
Men only here. I'll create an overall later
Probably should reflect that in the title of the video! This is your take on Top 10 Male Alpine Skiers, but I would argue that Vonn & Shriffin have to be on a list of Top 10 Alpine Skiers that is non-specific to sex @@speedkingz
Can't compare men's with women's. Like football, men's is in another universe.
@@cain1011There is a clear gap in competitiveness, but it's way closer than in football
Lol!
What about Marc Girardelli? I expected him to be on this list, are you serious?
Could be there, should probably
the Swiss were completely forgotten (Russi, Zurbriggen, Cuche, von Grünigen, etc.)!
Where you from?
Specially Bode Miller feels like a reach. He obviously was a spectacel all or nothing rider, which is fun to watch
No Zurbriggen is crazy! Excpected him in the top 5! He’s probably thr most important skier for the development of the sport.
Alberto Tomba feels also missing, but some italiens probably will remind you 😉
Bode is one of a kind, admired by all the best as one of the fastest
Pirmin Zurbriggen belongs into top five.
Ingemar Stenmark!!
Prima dei norvegesi, Aamod a parte, viene Zurbriggen e Girardelli, oltre a Gustavo Thoeni...
Pirmin Zurbriggen is where?!? Marc Girardelli is where??? Omg😱
Nothing about Girardelli,Zurbriggen, Thoeni,?
Ghiradelli, Zurbrigen, Von Groenigen probably should be on this list (and I should probably look up how to spell their names).
Forgetting Wayne Wong, Spyder Sabich, Glen Plake and Jonny Mosely. I mean, watch any real ski movie, by Warren Miller or Matchstick, and check out the local villains. Not hating on any of the Norwegians, just being comfortable with a broader definition of "skiing".
Jean Claude Killy was certainly the coolest male skier of all time.
Shiffrin has a claim to be the greatest female sports person ever, not just skiing
What about Pirmin Zurbriggen and Marc Girardelli??
Could be there
No matter the GOAT has been Marchel Hirscher, amid 8 WC in a row.
Another playfield when Stenmark run...
Odermatt has to be on this list in 2-3 years
You need to rank the women - skiers like Schriffrin and Vonn are two of the best ever.
Agree, but this is men only. Will make a new one
@@speedkingzWhy not say best mens skiers then? All you did is give this video a misleading title.
Can't compare women's with men's.
Men's waay more competitive.
And Nadig
And Lara Gut
What about Toni Sailer??
I have a results based rating that counts only world cup results - an not, like ski-db, olympics and world championships, trying to make the incomparable comparable. According to this, the most accomplished male skiers to date are:
1 Ingemar Stenmark SWE
2 Marcel Hirscher AUT
3 Marc Girardelli LUX
4 Pirmin Zurbriggen SUI
5 Hermann Maier AUT
6 Aksel-Lund Svindal NOR
7 Gustav Thoeni ITA
7 Alberto Tomba ITA
9 Benjamin Raich AUT
10 Stephan Eberharter AUT
Franz Klammer is not in the top 20 as he did only downhill, however, as the best downhiller ever, he deserves an honorable mention. Marco Odermatt will be in the top 10 in a couple of years if he continues to ski like this. Henrik Kristoffersen is also close to the top 10. The best Americans are Phil Mahre and Bode Miller as ## 14/15 respectively.
The top 10 women as of today are:
1 Annemarie Moser Proell AUT
2 Lindsey C. Vonn USA
3 Mikaela Shiffrin USA (active)
4 Vreni Schneider SUI
5 Katja Seizinger GER
6 Renate Goetschl AUT
7 Hanni Wenzel LIE
8 Anja Paerson SWE
9 Maria Riesch GER
10 Erika Hess SUI
Hence Shiffrin isn't #1 yet, but the top 3 are very close and Shiffrin likely will be #1 by the end of this season. Lara Gut and Petra Vlhova have good chances to end their careers in the top 10.
Top 5 Downhillers:
