I'm from the Netherlands so I have no dog in this fight but Aamodt's combined career total of twenty World Championship and Olympic medals is an all-time best. He is the second-youngest male alpine skier to win an Olympic gold medal (age 20 in 1992; Toni Sailer was two months younger in 1956). Until 2014, he was also the oldest alpine skier to win an Olympic gold medal. For almost six years, Aamodt led the all-time Marathon World Cup ranking, with a total of 13,252 points. By winning the super-G race at the 2006 Olympics, Aamodt became the first male alpine skier to win four gold medals in the Olympics. If you win the world championship in any sport your considered the best, and all the rest of the world cares about is the Olympics. Aamodt exceeded in both AND he mastered the whole mountain, skiing every alpine discipline, that you don't see today. I think it's safe to say that Aamodt deserves his position. Lasse Kjus did something I don't think will be repeated ever in alpine skiing. In the Vail world championship in 99, he got a medal in all 5 events. 3 silver and 2 gold medals. Gold in Super G and Giant slalom, silver in the downhill, combined and slalom. Still can't believe he pulled that off....;-)
If Hermann hadnt have his motorcycle accident, he would have been on the first place similar to stenmark or even better. He was such an extraordinary skier.
I still remember a race where Tomba almost got eliminated. He was already 2 seconds behind, but in the end he still won. Incredibly good slalom skier, maybe the best of all time. Respect from Austria!
Based on ski-db stats and who i feel were the best overall during their career. Taking into account age, comebacks, etc. Yes, Girardelli and zurbriggen should be there. But you can still argue for the other ones on this list
What about Austrian Toni Sailer? He won all the alpine events (Downhill, GS, Slalom) by HUGE margins in the 1956 Olympics (much greater margins of victory than Killy in 1968). I was fortunate enough to get his autograph when he visited Ottawa in 1964.
A interesting list with a lot of norwegian touch.... I clearly miss on this list Marc Girardelli, Pirmin Zurbriggen, Gustavo Thöni, Toni Sailer and Marco Odermatt !

I would agree that Stenmark is the GOAT but also remember he battled the Mahre brothers. There was also Marc Girardelli, Pirmin Zurbriggen, and where's Gustavo Thoeni who later coached Alberto Tomba?
Can you justify why Gustav Thoeni or Karl Schranz not? Thoeni won World Cups in 71, 72, 73 and 75 ( dramatic finish against Stenmark). Won also 3 Olympic medals an 7 World championship medals, of this 5 gold. His technical skill in GS and GSL was superb for his time. Probably you are to young to evaluate that.

my brother and I were competing at park city long ago in a FIS sanctioned SL ,GS. we were watching a skier coming down towards the starting hut for the GS and remarked how good he was skiing with a different style but we thought he could maybe win the race. to our astonishment it was Stein Erickson coming to fore- run the race. he had won a olympic gold medal in GS way back in the 1950's. !! and still carving rock solid turns. the best racers had just come back from WC races placing in the top 10.

Was this list made by a Norwegian? I am Norwegian and i have to say that Pirmin should be in the top five on this list! No discussion. Girardelli top ten aswell. Kudos, though for putting Lasse Kjus up there. He competed in all events in Vail 1999 and made it top two in every event. Had a lot of health problems ruining many seasons but had a ‘feeling’ that is hard to describe. (Both Kjus and Aamodt have no doubt Stenmark was the greatest ever, btw). I am to young to know about Killy and Thoeni.. Interesting discussion, though! I bet Odermatt will be remembered as one of the greats! Peace from Norway✌️
Weird that Aamodt and Kjus get so much flak. Clearly the most versatile/complete alpinists on this lists, which otherwise consist mostly of specialists(hence they won overall WC many times, most-winning olympians of all time etc)
Totally agree. And Aamodt got by far most top10s ever, and there's more races now too. Superb overall and really impacted the sport. Especially in olympics and wc
Nice list, but Tomba's record is inaccurate. He won three Olympic gold medals, two World Championships, four World Cup titles in slalom, four in giant slalom, and one overall World Cup title.
Where js Ingemar Stenmark? He is still the greatest of all time with the most wins and 2nd best is definitely Marcel Hirscher with 8 straight Ski World Cup Wins….
Interesting subject. Of the three Norwegian included, only Svindal clearly belongs. The other two (Lasse Kjus and Aamodt) are clearly Norwegian homer choices. The glaring omission is Pirmin Zurbriggen. Toni Seiler from the 1950s is from an era impossible to truly consider within modern skiing.
@@TheLedahosn Your take. Klammer is by many considered the greatest downhill skier. Svindal won all there is to win in speed races, and with his injuries and comebacks, you can argue he really is among the greats
Agree that Stenmark is a league of its own, and also Aamodt has more WCH and OI medals, but Herminator has way more WC podiums. I see him as somekind of underdog. Like Herman Maier who? but when you see his career you can't be unimpressed
What are the arguments to rank this way? Number of victories? Zurbriggen (won in all disciplines), Cuche (record of victories in Kitzbuehl), Girardelli? It seems that this ranking is based on subjectivity. Fine for me, but change the title of the video then.
Probably should reflect that in the title of the video! This is your take on Top 10 Male Alpine Skiers, but I would argue that Vonn & Shriffin have to be on a list of Top 10 Alpine Skiers that is non-specific to sex @@speedkingz
@@arroe8386 On the women's side it is easy for an outside country (CAN, USA, NZ, SVK, POL, CZE, CRO) to finish in the top 10 standings of a discipline but for the men very, very difficult. How are two female American skiers (Vonn and Shiffrin) the GOAT? When the USA men are so weak? In USA for every 100 super excellent recreational male skiers there are around 8 super excellent recreational female skiers. Skiing for men is way more popular at the highest levels and yet the USA men can't compete in FIS World Cup. In 2022/23 there were 11.6 million active skiers/snowboarders in the USA. That's more than the entire population of AUT. Lol!
Such classifications are perforce arbitrary, but this one is extravagant. I argue the label greatest *skiers* (not downhill or technical specialists) should be for the few ones who won races in all the disciplines. My own number 1 among those few, is Zurbriggen. Girardelli won one more Cup because he was active longer, but Zurbriggen had the sheer class that left you in awe. Bode Miller is close, with Thoeni and very few others.
Pirmin Zurbriggen would like a polite word with you! How about making a list of the best skier from every country? I know it'd be difficult for skiing giants like Austria, Switzerland, Norway etc but for Britain it just has to be Dave Ryding!
Who did this ranking? Did he ever watch ski competitions for the past 40 years?Aside from Stenmark, Klammer and Killy, you are totally off my friend...
Alexander Zhirov could have been included in this list, but a car accident interrupted both his career and his life... "Zhirov was a wonderful skier. I guess... he was a genius." Ingemar Stenmark.
Where you from? Specially Bode Miller feels like a reach. He obviously was a spectacel all or nothing rider, which is fun to watch No Zurbriggen is crazy! Excpected him in the top 5! He’s probably thr most important skier for the development of the sport. Alberto Tomba feels also missing, but some italiens probably will remind you 😉
I think Marc Girardeli and Pirmin Zirbriggin might push a couple of these guys out. Girardelli is probably the only racer to win multiple World Cup season tittles in both Slalom and Downhill, not to mention a GS tittle also. That's not likely to happen again. Oh, and five overall tittles!
I would certainly put Zurbriggen and Girardelli on my top ten. The battle of dh vs slalom or gs will go on forever. The combined discipline never worked that out. Stenmark is totally ok as numero uno, Hirscher is my nr 2 and Maier no 3. But then again, we all know that Shiffrin is the boss.
As for norwegians on a top ten list, Aamodt is the one and only. So far. He was a fuckin beautiful skier to watch. Braathen will end up as one of the top ten, hopefully.
Often overlooked but statistically in his era no other skier equals Mark Giardelli in my opinion who competed and was competitive in ALL disciplines....Can't say that about Steinmark and Tomba who only entered a mellow DH now and then when the overall title got close. Giardelli raced in all races all the time.
I find it difficult to compare skiers from different eras. The material has changed and evolved. Slope preparation is currently different and is also difficult to compare.

Takk!
Bode Miller si e Girardelli e Zurbriggen no? Ridicola come classifica
Love this list. The best skiiers I've seen live are Stenmark and Shiffrin. FOR Men my faves are Stenmark, Phil Mhare, Tomba, and the HERMANATOR!
Hirscher 🤔
@Schoizltom Hermann Mayer
@@jimhays2772 ich weiß wer der Herminator ist😉
@jimhays2772 Meier
@Schoizltom Ich habe ihn in Park City,Utah ,Rennen fahren sehen.
Excellent performance, congratulations to all wonderful participants 👌👌👌
Weird that Aamodt and Kjus get so much flak. Clearly the most versatile/complete alpinists on this lists, which otherwise consist mostly of specialists(hence they won overall WC many times, most-winning olympians of all time etc)
Totally agree. And Aamodt got by far most top10s ever, and there's more races now too. Superb overall and really impacted the sport. Especially in olympics and wc
Herminator No. 1 No Question. Absolut Legend.
La Bomba und das Hammer, first.
And then everybody else. :)
Thanks, great conversation starter, how about Stenmark, Hirscher, Killy, and Girardelli. The rest may argue for the other spots.
Killy was number 9 in this list, hirscher 4th, stenmark 1st. So what do you mean?
Rudolf Nierlich
Stephan Eberharter
Marc Girardelli
Pirmin Zurbriggen
Michael von Grünigen
How is pirmin zurbriggen not in there? Belongs into the top 6
Before I watched the list I made my own. 8 names matched. I think you could make a point for Zurbriggen, Girardelli, Toni Sailer or Zeno Colo.
Ingemar ruled. They created a whole new discipline just to stop him, Super G.
Nice list, but Tomba's record is inaccurate. He won three Olympic gold medals, two World Championships, four World Cup titles in slalom, four in giant slalom, and one overall World Cup title.
Thanks for clearing
Where js Ingemar Stenmark? He is still the greatest of all time with the most wins and 2nd best is definitely Marcel Hirscher with 8 straight Ski World Cup Wins….
Ski Worldcup Championship wins for Marcel Hirscher that is…..
He is there, what do you mean?
agreed re Stenmark
Interesting subject. Of the three Norwegian included, only Svindal clearly belongs. The other two (Lasse Kjus and Aamodt) are clearly Norwegian homer choices. The glaring omission is Pirmin Zurbriggen. Toni Seiler from the 1950s is from an era impossible to truly consider within modern skiing.
Can't believe you don't have one Swiss skier on this list! Might move the Herminator up a spot or two as well.
Ingemar Stenmark 💪💪💪
Not even one Swiss racer??? ⛷️🇨🇭
Sadly. Many good ones. Cuche maybe?
@@speedkingzzurbriggen > Kjus, Klammer, Aamodt, Svindal
Cuche ,von Grùningen,Zurbriggen have to be on that list;and I am Austrian
Klammer and Svindal should not be on that list.
Guenther Mader,Giradelli also won in all 5 disciplines
@@TheLedahosn Your take. Klammer is by many considered the greatest downhill skier. Svindal won all there is to win in speed races, and with his injuries and comebacks, you can argue he really is among the greats
the Herminator should be No.1 on your list.
Aah, dont agree, but good pick
Agree that Stenmark is a league of its own, and also Aamodt has more WCH and OI medals, but Herminator has way more WC podiums. I see him as somekind of underdog. Like Herman Maier who? but when you see his career you can't be unimpressed
What are the arguments to rank this way? Number of victories? Zurbriggen (won in all disciplines), Cuche (record of victories in Kitzbuehl), Girardelli? It seems that this ranking is based on subjectivity. Fine for me, but change the title of the video then.
Hmph. No mention of Lindsey Vonn (who almost dethroned Stenmark), or Mikaela Shiffrin (who actually dethroned him)? Okaaaaay...
Men only here. I'll create an overall later
Probably should reflect that in the title of the video! This is your take on Top 10 Male Alpine Skiers, but I would argue that Vonn & Shriffin have to be on a list of Top 10 Alpine Skiers that is non-specific to sex @@speedkingz
Can't compare men's with women's. Like football, men's is in another universe.
@@cain1011There is a clear gap in competitiveness, but it's way closer than in football
Lol!
Stenmark - undisputed GOAT!
I'll dispute that any day
@@boomeremenevanto girardelli, kjus, aamodt, zurbriggen, mahre. Nn ho visto Killy sailer schranz,
what connoisseur would leave out Girardelli and Zurbriggen?
Such classifications are perforce arbitrary, but this one is extravagant. I argue the label greatest *skiers* (not downhill or technical specialists) should be for the few ones who won races in all the disciplines. My own number 1 among those few, is Zurbriggen. Girardelli won one more Cup because he was active longer, but Zurbriggen had the sheer class that left you in awe. Bode Miller is close, with Thoeni and very few others.
My number one is Hermann Maier. His life should be made into a film
Where Pirmin Zurbriggen?!! Marc Girardelli ?!! Some of those shown here could possibly have their shoes shined! 🙂
the Swiss were completely forgotten (Russi, Zurbriggen, Cuche, von Grünigen, etc.)!
All greats but it should of been the top 20 more than 10 true legends .
Pirmin Zurbriggen belongs into top five.
Pirmin Zurbriggen would like a polite word with you!
How about making a list of the best skier from every country? I know it'd be difficult for skiing giants like Austria, Switzerland, Norway etc but for Britain it just has to be Dave Ryding!
Haha, good video idea. I'll give it a go, stay tuned
Obviously....you are a ski fan. Only fan. And Norwegian fan.
Hard to define the ten best. But Zurbriggen was a true master. As was Giradelli. Has been said by others. ;-)
Stenmark, my childhood hero ❤❤
Marc Giradelli? Pirmin Zurbriggen?
Who did this ranking? Did he ever watch ski competitions for the past 40 years?Aside from Stenmark, Klammer and Killy, you are totally off my friend...
Alexander Zhirov could have been included in this list, but a car accident interrupted both his career and his life...
"Zhirov was a wonderful skier. I guess... he was a genius." Ingemar Stenmark.
Wow, thanks
Where you from?
Specially Bode Miller feels like a reach. He obviously was a spectacel all or nothing rider, which is fun to watch
No Zurbriggen is crazy! Excpected him in the top 5! He’s probably thr most important skier for the development of the sport.
Alberto Tomba feels also missing, but some italiens probably will remind you 😉
Bode is one of a kind, admired by all the best as one of the fastest
Kostelic?
Marc Giradelli ?? Pirmin Zurbriggen ??
Prima dei norvegesi, Aamod a parte, viene Zurbriggen e Girardelli, oltre a Gustavo Thoeni...
Stenmark was an easy choice as the top male skier, but I would have loved to see one or two of the real pioneers, like Stein Eriksen!
see my post about Toni Sailer
Often overlooked but statistically in his era no other skier equals Mark Giardelli in my opinion who competed and was competitive in ALL disciplines....Can't say that about Steinmark and Tomba who only entered a mellow DH now and then when the overall title got close. Giardelli raced in all races all the time.
I question this list but agree Stenmark is #1. If you look at how Killy skied on that equipment it is quite remarkable.
Yeah, retired too soon though
@@speedkingz Aamodt only had 21 wins and Kjus 18. How can you rank them so high?
