Awesome job teaching your son to weld! I do have one tip that I’ve learned the hard way. I would teach him to always leave the trailer safety chains connected until after you get the ball disconnected. That way if for some reason the trailer rolls it won’t go far. Obviously this was flat ground but best to always air on the side of safety! When I was around 18 I unhooked a trailer with a 2000lb tank of water on it and it went right down the hill into the trees haha

Glad I could help. The way things going in this world; it’s best to learn to do a few things on your own.

Truth the more skills you learn the better I have saved myself thousands of dollars learning how to work on vehicles. Now off to welding

Thank you for the quick tutorial. It makes perfect sense to have the trailer level when you put that on.

i told my grandson i was going to teach him to weld. he is 11 now so i need to get started on that.
out of the three boys my daughter has he is the only one interested in stuff like that and helps me a lot doing just about anything outside. the oldest is a video gaming nerd and the youngest may be following in his footsteps but he is only 7 and helps me some so there is still hope for him.
great video btw. you need to get a few pieces of steel to practice on for your son.

Man you are smart!!!! Thanks so much! About to weld two of these on a large tractor implement and was trying to clamp it on like an idiot. Mine have the flat plates though.

Wow, no mask and welding on a galvanized part 🤣
Next time, take a flap wheel and remove the galvanized coating off the outside of the jack mount before welding and make sure you wear a P100 respirator under your hood since the inside is still coated unless you remove it with a drum sander. At least have a large fan behind you blowing the zinc oxide (light blue fumes) away from your welding hood.
Your lungs will thank you in the long run because I know a person who welded on galvanized parts with no protection and you could hear them gasping for air over 100yds. away before they eventually died due to long term exposure to zinc oxide 😉
Also, that isn't like spot welding thin sheet metal, try a cold weld instead with no real penetration because the swivel jack pipe mount is at least 1/4' thick.
If you're going to be welding on a jack to a trailer, try buying one that has no galvanized coating like the following...
    - CURT 28931 [ 9/16" pin holes ]
    - CURT 28932 [ 5/8" pin holes ]
    - CURT 28930 [ 9/16" pin holes ] * channel mount - easier to weld-on *

What settings on your flux core welder were you using to do this? Line speed and amps ect? I have an old hay rake that I need to weld one of these swing back jacks to it and I have one of the titanium welders from HarborFreight but I don’t know what settings approximately I need to be at to do it

Thanks for the video and love how you included your son! Will check out the welding gear you suggested. Does anything change for a galvanized trailer?

you are welding without gloves, man! tough hand you got!

i do it all the time. never burn my hands but have burned my feet with improper shoes and that is no fun.
if i am going to be doing a good bit of welding i use gloves and sleeves but not on something as small as this which is most of my welding anyway.

Have a similar setup with the swivel jack and a first time welder. I am putting 2 on the rear behind the tires to give stability to the trailer when loading it from the drop down gate. I noticed your son initially tack welded at 9 -12 and 3 O'clock. Have one of those flow welders. Did you go all around the circle piece being welded that permits the swivel mount or something else? Thanks.
