    HAPPY CHRISTMAS/HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
    Why do we bother with a hair light? Or even a kicker? In Part 3 of Back Light, we'll take a look at some of the ways we can use these techniques to improve both visual aspects of our images, as well as storytelling.

    Feels like any movie Bob Richardson shoots starts with a hair/top light and shapes from there. Specifically Hateful Eight most characters were lit with hair lights.

    • @RobEllisCinematographer
      @RobEllisCinematographer  8 місяців тому

      It's been a few years since I've seen it but I suppose a lot of it was very wide shots, on a set - so building from a top light was probably a great way to keep lights out of the space also!

    Hey Rob, I’ve been watching and learning from your videos for about 2 years now. You are unbelievably gifted in cinematography and equally gifted in teaching it. Thank you so much for putting this content out here for us smaller creators! Also curious as to how you gained so much knowledge. Did you go to school for this?

      @RobEllisCinematographer  8 місяців тому +1

      Apologies for the slow reply Daniel - thank you so much! I'm happy you're getting so much out of these videos! No school, just an interest in photography and video which naturally turned into an interest for lighting! A lot of testing, failure to get the light looking the way I want it, research into why and repeat!

    kicker is my fav! also, i've been looking for a "christopher nolan" look. He has a distinct look to his films(color, contrast and light) your vids are the closest i've found to mimic his style. I'd love to learn how you achieve it! camera, lenses, settings, color etc.

    All this is very good for close shots but... what about the general shot? The lighting would change completely from the general to the medium shot...

    • @RobEllisCinematographer
      @RobEllisCinematographer  8 місяців тому

      You would be planning your shots to account for this, so if you wanted to light like some of these examples you might set them up specifically for those important medium/close ups - or, you might not go too wide, or move around the room too much throughout the scene - or, you might sacrifice some precision and light from further away for more flexibility and space for the actors/angles. That would be a little easier on a higher budget as you may have a set to work with, but not impossible on a lower one!

    Great video! Where can I find that bulb mount you used behind your head?

    • @RobEllisCinematographer
      @RobEllisCinematographer  8 місяців тому

      It's actually a bit of a Frankenstein contraption that was entirely pointless on my part - the bulb is in the Nanlite bulb AC adapter/magnetic mount - nanlite.co.uk/e27-magnetic-mount-and-ac-adapter-for-pavobulb-10c/ - which I stuck to a metal plate with a baby pin receiver, then an eye coupler with a baby pin on the boom into the receiver. But I could've just used the magnetic mount on the stand itself! 🥲
