    Hey folks! Since this video is taking off a few years down the road, I just wanted to drop a message. Thank you so so much for all your kind words. I'm speechless. This channel has always been something I've done time-permitting and evolved between different subjects. Most of all I'm really passionate about design projects. Interiors, products, anything thoughtful created. So in the next few months, stay tuned for more videos. I'm starting a blog and newsletter on lunationlab.com. I'm moving soon and will have a whole office space ready for projects. Exciting stuff! Talk soon. -Jackson

    i'm torn because i love this bespoke homemade approach to lighting, but at the same time i feel like those diodes are super visible just standing near the fixture. would have loved to see the incorporation of a diffuser like you showed in the beginning of the video to reduce glare!

    Quick tip to avoid the splitting of the wood. Drill pilot holes in the wood before using the wood screws. Pilot holes are drilled with drill bits that are typically the diameter of the screw minus the threads. Seems like more steps but it goes quick. And since the base board was mdf you only need the pilot holes in the wood.

    It’s important to note that as length increases, voltage will drop and the tape will start to progressively dim… it’s a good idea to test first and find that diminishing point so you know where to start a new strip to minimize the effect of the voltage drop. In some applications, with the use of a 2>1 cable, you can split the power and send it to both sides of the strip. This varies based on if you’re using a dimmer ahead of the tape or not

    one major issue i see with this design is that you will see the pixel tape from above. professional lighting designers go to great lengths to hide the tape from all viewing angles. i would suggust placing the tape on the side of the molding, and putting a strip of wood above it to hide the tape. then paint everything white on the interior to maximize the amount of light pushed out.

    Great video! It looks great.
    A few notes from someone who has done a lottt of LED lighting:
    (1) 24 V is almost always better than 12 V so you can use longer strands without becoming dim at the end
    (2) Get high-CRI lights, otherwise the color of people and other things in the room will be off, usually quite significantly
    (3) Get variable color temperature lights so you can vary them based on time of day and improve your circadian rhythm
    (4) Get a zigbee (or WLED) controller so you can integrate with your smart home (Home Assistant is the best!)

    • @ducttaperulestheworl
      @ducttaperulestheworl 3 місяці тому

      Love me some high CRI strips. But do you think they sell bi-colour strips for these?
      Or do you run 2 strips of LED's of different colour temperature?

    @hubey 2 місяці тому +2

    2 Things to consider:
    1. It will collect house dust. Solution is to have a clear or frosted plastic strip run along the top.
    2. If you get an RGB + Bi Colour Warm & Cool White LED strip, you can make the strip go through all the sunlight colour spectrum. From peak bluish daylight, to sunset red. This way you can match the outside light and preserve natural circadian rhythms. (FYI blue light is actually good, just at the right time (middle of the day). Blue light is only bad once the sun has gone down.)

The editing, the camera quality, the lighting (ironic, in a video studying aesthetic lighting lol) it’s all so tasteful!!! thank you so much for sharing this when you did. always know that just cuz a video didn’t blow up right away, it also isn’t voided from blowing up and being seen in the future. so always create. always share. keep doing. the payoff is undeniably worth it in the end. thank you.

    You can avoid splitting you angle molding by pre-drilling and countersinking your holes. Torque doesn't matter, other than the fact that it drives the screw in further, applying greater wedge force at the hole. If you want it to last, add glue to the joint. The screws will be your clamps.

  • @Dev-lc4cd
    @Dev-lc4cd 9 днів тому

    Should be mentioned that any wall or ceiling being lit this way must be flawlessly smooth, otherwise raking lighting such as this will highlight and exaggerate any flaws.
    Or you can skip doing a skim coat and repaint and just put up some string lights, which doesn't have this issue.

    This is the most millennial project (soft string lighting a millennial gray rented city apartment behind a bike) accomplished with the most boomer skills (carpentry through three methods of wood joining, cutting to length, and rewiring internal electrical from AC120V To DC12V and extension cord).

  • @SpGIIFaCeZz
    @SpGIIFaCeZz 3 місяці тому

    Be careful with the wiring. Small cables are not made for being run too long of a distance. There is a high risk of an electric fire if you run the thin wire long distances.
    Extend the high mains voltage instead if you need to run the wire any longer than 5-8 meters. (Or if your pulling a high current to your LED-strip).
    Be careful out there and don't burn down your home.
    Better to ask an electrician for help if you're unsure. May save your life or property 👍

    My problem with things like this is the depth. I love the idea, but 2in baseboards are a huge no-go for me, especially since I already have .75in baseboards in my place with 1in quarter-round. I need a solution that minimizes the depth so that 1) it is easier to install without having to move everything in my apartment and 2) it looks better. It'd also be nice to be capped so that dust and debris can't get down in the cavity.

  • @Kyouske_42
    @Kyouske_42 3 місяці тому

    Nice project, I appreciate your perspective on the topic of indirect lighting with inexpensive methods. But I saw too many rookie mistakes with the LED tape. You bought tape that's overmolded for water resistance, which is unnecessary indoors and more expensive. You also should use 24V tape and PSU if you have longer strips, especially if you extend on the low voltage side. If you wanna spend just a little, more you can buy LED COB strips, which are a true generational improvement over the (still cheaper) individual LEDs on the strip. Also, a CCT variant has two different color temperatures and lets you choose anything in between with a suiting dimmer. Lastly, you showed the extension being screwed down with bare strands, this is not great. Soldering is the cleaner solution if you get the barrel connectors on a piece of wire.

    I might do this like, this week, with an Ikea shelf that's currently just my media console. I could literally clean it up, stick the strip to the back and be done

    Indeed, it's a good, informative video I was looking for. I'm surprised it has so few likes. Thank you!

      You can also skip the dimmer, wiring, and barrel connectors, making it only $61.

    To avoid splitting wood in the future, I heard it was a good idea to drill a pilot hole. Very nice video !

    That was really well done. I was looking for a solution to do mostly down lighting in baseboards, but this has me realizing that so long as it is diffuse lighting it pretty much always looks great.

    We moved out of the hood to a condo and the upstairs bedrooms don't have ceiling lights.
    You'd think I'd be bummed but id take no ceiling lights over being in our old neighborhood anyway and it gives me the perfect opp to set up a rwnter friendly indirect led lighting

    You should still use shrink tubing over the little screw in barrel connectors.

    Echoing what everyone said already: Nice build, you’ve got a super soothing voice and vibe, clean editing look - definitely checking out more videos and subscribing! // I am curious: How is this to clean, since the baseboard doesn’t sit flush with the wall? Do you just vacuum with an extension behind the board?

      Thank you very much. I'm still here and planning on getting back into it! I adding a couple photos to answer your question in the article: lunation.cc/m3w
