  • Today I start sorting out my electrical problems by fixing the dual battery system in the Land Rover Discovery XD. This solenoid looks the same if you want to install something similar: amzn.to/41CTmnf

Love the systematic way you go about diagnosing issues. This series on the Land Rover are by far my favorite.

I think I have written this previously. There is a miniscule chance of me needing most of what Steve shows us but I sit and watch each episode in awe ... thanks, Steve. 👌

Hi Steve, as I may have spoken before, on my 1991 3-door 200 Tdi I once owned for 10 years, I put two same identical batteries under the bonnet (hood) joined together that gave me 12 volts theoretical, but a huge amount of amps for any occasion. Even cold starting in very cold winters I never really needed the heater plugs as the big old-fashioned diesel just spun over so quickly. From new, the second battery tray was meant for the land rovers bottle jack, which got replaced in the "boot".. Many thanks for these Landrover Videos Steve, I am not a lover of the more modern ones at all, far too much "ELECTRICKERY" going on with them now.. Long Live older Landies eh.. thanks, Ian - UK.

It can be difficult to diagnose other peoples work and even if in it's current state it is done correctly. You used your usual common sense/logic to understand the problem and this system now works. Well done Steve, I will look forward to the next part. 👍👍

Love how you explain everything so clearly! I have a 200TDI and I am a mechanical noob trying to learn things. Such videos are very helpful, thanks a lot!

Nice explanation! It’s good to see someone else’s working out when there’s an issue.
This is a great series 👏

Your ability to diagnose and repair electrical issues is something amazing. I looked and looked for the problem and finally gave up by electrical taping both positive leads. When I first got the XD the system wasn’t working. I got it working by cleaning the grounds. When it died again I never was able to trace the problem. Amazing you found the connector issue. Really enjoy watching you get the old girl back in good nick!!!

Trying to sort out other people's work can be a lot like a jigsaw puzzle. A multimeter is an invaluable tool. I find myself going back to first principles the main one being EARTH. I really enjoyed your process and outcome. Thank you.

I do enjoy watching a diagnosis of electrics, and thinking about the Land Rover woes, confirms that it's to be expected because the wiring is by Lucas, the Prince of Darkness, isn't it?
    Enjoyable video Steve, thanks again.

That Grey Foam block under the steering column must be a knee protector for crash protection on the USA models? , I've never seen that in a UK model Discovery, good idea. Great Video as always, thanks from London

It's always jolly fun trying to work out what other people have done to the electrical system of an old car. At least with a vehicle of this age you stand a chance of being able to figure it out without needing a diagnostic computer and a degree in electrical engineering.

This set up reminds me of my RV electrical configuration, in that the RV has a 12V deep cycle battery for supporting all the domestic appliances in back, and a standard 12V under the hood for the engine. The differences are that the RV had a separate charging system off either shore power or generator for the deep cycle, and the tie in for emergency starting was a simple push button switch on the dashboard that put the deep cycle in parallel for starts. It took two hands because the tie in switch was "push to connect" and so was the starter key switch and the two switches were feet apart. This system has the advantage of having the emergency mode hands free. I am curious as to how the 2nd battery on the Discovery is charged. I suspect that you put the switch in "dual" when you want to charge the second battery, but as you mentioned that is going to be hard on a standard 12V automotive battery that expects to be topped off continuously for long term service. Perhaps that is why the 2nd battery system was completely disconnected by a previous owner. Is the alternator on this rig higher output than usual to accommodate charging two batteries? I've been told that running an alternator full output is pretty hard on them, although I've never noticed a problem personally.

Too bad if you go through high water Steve with the air filter box open like it is due to the second battery placement. 🙈

Its not any different than it was before there is a horn that stuck out at the same height. This is what it looked like: i.ebayimg.com/images/g/56QAAOSw44BYc8su/s-l500.jpg

It will probably go through deaper water now because the battery blocks the water from just flowing straight into the air box.
