If enough of us band together for a massive ad campaign we could potentially send Spiffing Brit to the moon! Down with the "How to be a millionaire" ads! Bring in the UA-cam exploit ads!
There was an exploit a few years back with this same process where you could ruin someone's video by running it as an advertisement without their permission. It allowed you to change the title of the video as well ONLY for when it loaded as an ad. So when people immediately were confused and left the video, the video would get retention-rate bombed and stop being recommended due to the plummeting average view duration.
Yep, also explains why my previous sock puppet account got recommended an Organ harvesting livestream on Christmas eve or something despite me only dipping into the Spiff channel for these sorts of videos and never watching anything rimworld
Spiff I've been seeing large corporations do this for years. I've been wondering why an entire movie gets uploaded to an advertisement and you just explained it.
Not just corporations. This meta is like 5 years old. First kicked off during the Adpocalypse. Ads were extremely cheap, so everyone started promoting their videos. The first few channels to have jumped on the bandwagon actually got mad gains. I'm kinda disappointed Spiff is only discovering it years later, when there's really no money to be made anymore.
So for people who don't know the story of RTGame's 2022 highlights, basically UA-cam screwed him over by saying his clips of advertiser friendly videos were not advertiser friendly, and killed the video's momentum. Thanks Spiff for helping boost back a good channel!
Not just that. When he appealed UA-cam went back, age restricted and demonetized lots of his older videos, and gave him absolutely no opportunity to fix the things they had issues with.

This i feel is the key to your plan here.
ow, and there doesn't need to be any visual content on the video either as your viewers are quite literally asleep, just up all the ads at the beginning or, more helpfully, at the end as a cheeky wakeup call :D
See the trouble though is you do need to put the sponsor bit in the video. It's probably not going to perform so well if it wakes everyone up an hour in with SPONSORED BY RAID SHADOW LEGENDS
@@ZacmanTheRed that's why you put the "This sleep session was sponsored by RAID SHADOW LEGENDS!!!" as the end, as a wake up call :D preferably at about 5x normal volume lol
UA-cam used to give out $100 in free adsense no questions asked so I would just make a new account and advertise my channel with a rate of $0.01 per view and it actually did net me 10k free views (which at the time when I had 5k subs)was amazing).

I was just coming here to post this. Also if you somehow set up a botnet that all watched the video for a second or 10 then left, hop from video to video you could demonetize the whole channel..

Hey, just because we are broke by some gold old Anglo-Saxon Imperialism that doesn't mean we don't want buy stuff. We just don't have the money to buy, but we still add views for those looking only for the number...
@@thespiffingbrit Here's a question. I live in Russia, and in a past year very sad things had happened, wars, viruses, so UA-cam had to turn of any advertising in Russian youtube due to the law. We don't see ads in videos, banners don't show up. So, does this mean, that our views from Russia are not monetized for any youtuber that we watch? And is it even worth to buy GoogleAD for Russia?
I think you can target specific channels in Adsense, I always thought it would be smart for UA-camrs to film dedicated videos for sponsors and agree to run them as ads on all their videos for a set period of time. This way, you can give sponsors access to your entire back catalog and not just one specific video. This would also allow you to decouple your content from sponsors so if there's ever an issue with one of your sponsors doing sketchy stuff, you don't have to go back and edit the ad spots out of your videos. You could just stop running the campaign. I think I heard that sometimes targeting a specific channel doesn't necessarily mean your ads will only run on that channel, but you could also add a nonsense tag to all your videos that is unlikely to be used by other channels and target that tag as well which would hopefully help to ensure that just your channel is targeted. Ultimately the highest paying casual viewer for creators are users of youtube premium. Personally I can estimate 20-40% of my audience use adblock or premium which is high by youtube standards but hey you guys like to exploit :D

That last bit is kinda scary though based on how badly it tanked your CPM for the livestream; bad faith actors could potentially nerf a creator's watch times into the ground
An interesting question then: for most people, do they get recommended at all anyway? Does it pay more to have your video advertised and seen a little than it does to let the algorithm do the work? Our boy spiffing is pretty popular so his videos likely get recommended more than most and it would affect him. But what about a general case?
@@merlindraws3616 Spiff's SEO was 2010-style. We're past 2020. Better focused targetting gets you less ad views with higher quality. Advertising streams is also a no-no. Optimization suggestion: Look at the video's analytics to figure out what kind of audience mostly watched it (for example male, between 18 and 30, from top 5 countries) so you can make the ad campaign more specific, lowering the price and possibly bringing more views from people that are likely more interested in your niche.
since you work in the industry, you should know that video-ads don't generate revenue for the youtuber, since the video IS the ad and isn't showing any other ads in it..
I always wondered how many regular UA-camrs were actually advertising their own videos. I always figured it could never work, because imagine subscribing to a UA-camr who you saw in an ad while trying to watch another UA-camr. But sometimes I also wonder if those people who seemingly rocket to fame overnight didn't just get lucky with the algorithm, lol. It's tough when you're small and/or just starting out and you can barely get one subscriber per upload. The best thing I've found to rely on is posting videos in the communities for the games I play, mainly Reddit. Some bigger communities (E.g. Minecraft) ban advertising your videos, but smaller communities tend to enjoy seeing UA-camrs making content about their games!
I LOVE how more and more people are not just calling UA-cam out on their lies and manipulating bullshit, and how broken their system is, but going through and exposing them in detail. Google and UA-cam know about these exploits, they implemented them to give corporate sponsor channels shortcuts into the top of the algorithm so they could say that there's nothing wrong with the algorithm.
I did this test in the past. If you promote your video, your CPM will decrease fast. And. Even if you deleted the video, it will take a few months before your CPM goes back up on that video. The more you push your videos, the more they take from your earnings.
Spiff, I just want you to know you’re such a UA-cam for figuring it’s out. And Susan and her ilk are real UA-cam’s for leaving this kind of exploit in their system. Bravo.
I think Technoblade did this for a while, targeting channel growth instead of just views. Eventually, it got to a point where everyone who'd be interested in his content had already heard of him, but it worked very well in the beginning. I wish he was still around to see this.
I get the impression that Spiff is simultaneously one of the most exhausting friends in a social circle (just because you don't know what shenanigan's he's playing at), while simultaneously being one of the most cherished companions around.
Another big factor in the CPM collapse is UA-cam Premium revenue. I had a past stream unexpectedly explode (500k watch hours level explode) and something like 70% of the revenue from it was YT premium revenue, not ads. But someone with YT premium won't get served the ad at all.
Pretty sure spiff just used highest rank available back then and then after the 2 year rank updates come byt he just never update his own emblem.... Maybe...
I like how Spiff is essentially an economy white hat hacker. This is the kind of thing companies would pay good money for bringing it to their attention
When I'm having an "ordinary" day I'm terrified that Spiff will show up and find some way to exploit it. I've had Spiff nightmares and Spiff on my nightmares...
I mean, the algorithm has been skewed in favour of large channels for at least 8 years now. It used to be that youtube would recommend other videos from your own channel first, then larger ones a bit lower, but about the time they made minimum requirements for monetisation, they also switched it so smaller channels get larger channels content recommended at the top with their own content way down the sidebar. It made growth of smaller channels way harder than it used to be while pushing viewers away and to the big earners instead. It's been pay to win for a long time.
The videos on the right side used to be "related videos" and were great for discovering new content. A few years later and it's just a glorified 2nd homepage to try and get you to click on things in a feedback loop by showing you things the algorithm thinks you're interested in to increase your watch time on youtube to maximize profit.
This could get you in trouble with defrauding advertisers. If you take a video sponsor spot that pays based on number of views the advertiser is expecting their ad read to seen by those viewers. Obviously if the viewers don't even make it far enough into the video to see the ad read then the advertiser is not getting what they paid for. Further, most advertisers will pick a UA-camr based on their audience, so if you are advertising your video out to people who are not your typical audience, then the advertiser who is paying you for their ad read is not reaching the audience they paid for. A UA-camr who uses this is very likely to be sued.
I like that they added the ability to change the video being advertised without thinking about it in any way. You know that was a coder who loves their job and will do *exactly* what they're told.
@@domieSinday Why do you think I'm a bot? I'm tired of people like you writing 'bot' whenever they see some product/service mentioned in the comments, be it a friendly recommendation or even a placement or promotion.

Hi Spiff! I'm a data analyst and I really enjoy how you mess with things. Have you considered making essentially identical videos, and seeing how these tricks affect engagement vs viewer numbers? I wonder if subscribers would watch essentially an identical video, and whether UA-cam would notice?
Fun fact this does work it's how some short`s channels get views quick by uploading the same video over and over it also tricks the algorithm into promoting it more and more gaining even more views or this is what I've seen during long stints of shorts scrolling out of bordem

Google and UA-cam know about these exploits, they implemented them to give corporate sponsor channels shortcuts into the top of the algorithm so they could say that there's nothing wrong with the algorithm.
Good guy Spiff helping Dan out via UA-cam when UA-cam is the one screwing Dan over.
I did this test in the past. If you promote your video, your CPM will decrease fast. And. Even if you deleted the video, it will take a few months before your CPM goes back up on that video. The more you push your videos, the more they take from your earnings.
I knew my mum was paying for all my views!

Spiff, I just want you to know you’re such a UA-cam for figuring it’s out. And Susan and her ilk are real UA-cam’s for leaving this kind of exploit in their system. Bravo.
"Oh i'am paying to win alright" Thanks for this awesome video, I love ur vids
I think Technoblade did this for a while, targeting channel growth instead of just views. Eventually, it got to a point where everyone who'd be interested in his content had already heard of him, but it worked very well in the beginning. I wish he was still around to see this.
So did the Rare Americans, they put a song as an ad and it worked pretty well
This seems like an algorithm comment
Blitzscaling gonna scale.
Care to elaborate a bit more?
I loved the part where spiff said "It's exploiting time" and exploited all over Google.
0:59 “in the fires of Mount Doom… somewhere in California”
As a Tolkien nerd and a Californian I found this hilarious 😂
The world is lucky Spiff is a merciful person otherwise everything ever would get exploited into destruction
Spiff is such a UA-cam for coming up with these strats
So the Spiffy Brit learns about ADVERTISING... you know, that thing that every company on EARTH ALREADY DOES. Good job!
I get the impression that Spiff is simultaneously one of the most exhausting friends in a social circle (just because you don't know what shenanigan's he's playing at), while simultaneously being one of the most cherished companions around.
Yes. His 4 vs 1 Skyrim video was a pretty good indication of that.

@@JorgetePanete THIS! Why on earth do people use apostrophes for plurals?

spiff literally goes from breaking games to breaking the real world. A true villain breaking the 4th wall
Another big factor in the CPM collapse is UA-cam Premium revenue.
I had a past stream unexpectedly explode (500k watch hours level explode) and something like 70% of the revenue from it was YT premium revenue, not ads. But someone with YT premium won't get served the ad at all.
Running an ad for RT’s demonetized video? Total UA-cam move Spiff
I like how both me and Spiff first think of RT when it comes to choosing a video to promote that you don't own.
yes you tube is pay to win, the more views the more attention, the more over all money from ads will come
Spiff has once again pulled an absolute youtube for showing us how much of a youtube UA-cam is
UA-cam is perfectly balanced
It really is

Hats off to you spiff, you truly are a youtube among men.
I love that he's finding not only virtual exploits, but real exploits as well. Cheers, good sir!
The man's basically the equivalent of a modern mainstream grey hat -hacker- exploiter.
Thanks!
Thank you!
I like how Spiff is essentially an economy white hat hacker. This is the kind of thing companies would pay good money for bringing it to their attention
When I'm having an "ordinary" day I'm terrified that Spiff will show up and find some way to exploit it. I've had Spiff nightmares and Spiff on my nightmares...
what the hell is that emoji
Paying for someone else's ad is hilarious! Positive prank 😆
"Daddy needs more teabags." Is my new favourite quote from Spiff. 😄😅
Aw man, both Spiff and RT Game are such massive lads. They're amazing. They're both such UA-cams. Amazing. *standing ovation*
*_Can confirm this is how we hit 1000 subscribers when shorts weren't available._*
What a UA-cam move helping out RT like that!
oh no, imagine getting that as an unskippable ad.
12 HOUR UNSKIPPABLE RIMWORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All ads are skippable by killing the app
One of the best channel for understanding how the UA-cam related systems work 🙂
I wouldn't be surprised if youtube headquarters subscribed to spiff just so they can keep an eye on his shenanigans.
UA-cam being Pay 2 Win is such a UA-cam thing for UA-cam to do.
The first time I drank Yorkshire tea I won a warzone match
This man is play testing life, and it seems to be perfectly balanced.
This content is the epitome of Murphy’s law with ‘what can break, will break’
Or Spiff's law..."What can be exploited will be exploited."
lol that ai gen image at the start caught me off guard
Spiff is truly being quite a youtube with this idea and i love it.
I agree, quite the UA-cam move
This could get you in trouble with defrauding advertisers. If you take a video sponsor spot that pays based on number of views the advertiser is expecting their ad read to seen by those viewers. Obviously if the viewers don't even make it far enough into the video to see the ad read then the advertiser is not getting what they paid for. Further, most advertisers will pick a UA-camr based on their audience, so if you are advertising your video out to people who are not your typical audience, then the advertiser who is paying you for their ad read is not reaching the audience they paid for.
A UA-camr who uses this is very likely to be sued.
yes, but how do they notice it?
If there is the invisible hand, spiff clearly is the invisible kick in the balls.
Spiff breaking the Internet yet again...
This is the first video that I ever watched from your UA-cam channel. Very interesting video! Interesting UA-cam economics
I like that they added the ability to change the video being advertised without thinking about it in any way. You know that was a coder who loves their job and will do *exactly* what they're told.
I think you'd be much better off buying views on some SMM panel like Famester...
I second this, there's no cheaper option than this to amass views on UA-cam.

i liked the part where he turned to the camera and said "it's exploitin' time!"
I find it hilarious that youtube allows adverts about organ harvesting but draw the line at capital letters.
Hi Spiff! I'm a data analyst and I really enjoy how you mess with things. Have you considered making essentially identical videos, and seeing how these tricks affect engagement vs viewer numbers? I wonder if subscribers would watch essentially an identical video, and whether UA-cam would notice?
Dangerous, could get taken the entire channel down for "reuse content"
Fun fact this does work it's how some short`s channels get views quick by uploading the same video over and over it also tricks the algorithm into promoting it more and more gaining even more views or this is what I've seen during long stints of shorts scrolling out of bordem
Some yt shorts creators just re-upload other peoples stuff shamelessly. I don't think they need to use any tricks to get views, just steal content.
@@halinaqi2194 I bet the system can't detect this as reused content, since it's a different format.. and the thief can easily just add text.
@@RetroCheats also because it's usually from a different platform, such as TikTok. Which is already cringe in itself
and youtube will just be perfectly happy with more people running ads on their platform

Spiff, you really need to turn these powers towards helping Dan get more money back from UA-cam.
Or at the very least, please turn your powesr to helping him before you release the exploit to the masses.
A spiffing video from you once again brit
For some reason I feel like this video is illegal to watch, not because of the exploit, but a look behind the scenes of the money flow for someone who’s never really got the cost / profit gap of youtube. I love it
To make things easier, UA-cam just should add an "Advertise this video" button near the "Like" and "Subcribe" buttons!
1:57 "I pay UA-cam for views and UA-cam then pays me for those views"
Fuck yeah capitalism!
