    Also, I'll add one more thing about the cymbal sound... These are the entry level Paiste cymbals. for their price they're great. But don't expect them to sound like a Paiste Signature cymbal. Since I play higher end cymbals, I'm planning on making a stacker out of one of them which sounds awesome! The cymbals are great for someone just starting out who needs a second crash, or you can give it to someone for Christmas if you like.

    When I first started playing drums not long ago, I never thought I could play well. I sucked. I couldn't keep time, my fills were horrible, not to mention double bass and the rest. I never got a drum teacher cause I wanted to learn how to play on my own. When I stumbled upon your videos , I loved it instantly. Simple lessons, explained in a nice and easy way. Thanks to you Jared I learned how to play drums just by watching your videos. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making it free.

    I got the zildjian a391 box set. I already did this a little bit but now im trying to do these techniques as much as possible because it was a large investment. I made a mental note to always hit inward. So if im striking with my left hand it moves from.left to right and if im striking with right, right to left. And i looove the ride cymbal. Ive never had a ride that lush and crashable before i had a vintage pre logo stamped zil ride that was awedome very pingy and lots of cut, but not what i looking for. The 21 sweet ride is so much better. Its definitely sweet

    I have never cracked/broken a cymbal. Although I have told that I am relatively softer hitting drummer, I always felt if I needed too I can but I would rather just use mics and save my energy.
    To gain strength I use the " fastest way to get faster" technique with slightly heavier sticks to gain power over speed then on others day revert back to my normal sticks for just speed. Do it for 5 days a week ( 1/2 hour or more ) for 1 month and I guarantee you that you will see a big difference.
    Although I sort of already did my crash at the right angle I never though about going from a side to side angle. I will give that a try.

    I have a question! If you see it please answer me :) So how I`m supposed to hit the crash cybla if i have a faster beat. For example if I have to 8 or 16 notes on the crash cymbal ? Isn`t there any other way to hit the cymbals. How about hitting them sharply with not much power ? I think this would suit ?

    Another important thing to consider is the tightness of the wingnuts. I've seen drummers over tighten their cymbals to the point where they can't move at all. This will crack your bell.

    Hi Jared, nice one too, thanks!
    One thing you could add when choking cymbals: instead of the traditional cymbal+kick, hit the cymbal on its own and play the kick drum as you choke it. It's got a "closed hihat" type of feel, but definitely different and surprising.
    Off the top of my head, one example could be here at 1:54: /watch?v=T5OmzUEm504

      Depends on what music you play and what sound you're personally looking for.
      Zildjian A Custom, Sabain AAX are good for metal because they're heavy and designed to take hard hits. If you're into jazz or lighter music you might want thinner and lighter cymbals that don't take much to get their maximum sound out

    Does stick size have anything to do with breaking cymbals? Because I was using AHEAD 5B's and 5A's as well as ProMark Joey Jordison's and my Sabian crash ride ended up cracking, (I hit with the glancing blow technique you showed) but when I started using 2B's and Vic Firth Metal Nylon (because I like a heavier stick) I broke an A Custom 16" Crash and an 18" Oriental China "Trash". I was just wondering if the sticks had as much to do with breakage as the way you hit it does

    • @iloveNgany
      @iloveNgany 9 років тому +2

      After breaking 3 (expensive!) cymbals you likely need to change your technique. It's you, not the sticks or cymbals. Cymbals should last a lifetime.

    about hitting the bell of the cymbal. You have to be really precise to get the BEST bell sound: aim right above the spot where the bell meets the bow of the cymbal. that's where the best bell sound comes from.

    This might be a dumb question, but I want to get a Zildjian EFX cymbal... But people say they crack quickly, and they say it's either because they're just thin, or their technique is just bad. Do you just hit those (thin) EFX cymbals with this technique aswell, so you prevent cracking them easily? Thanks :)

    • @OliNelson1819
      @OliNelson1819 10 років тому

      as a rule of thumb, generally the thinner the cymbal the more durable it is - thinner cymbals are more malleable and thus can bend within their limits more. efx cymbals are less durable cos of the holes in them, but as long as you treat them well they'll be fine

    well, if you are prepared for your cymbals to break one after another, or not to open up as fully as they can - and still be hitting them the one and only way you like (for some reason) - way to go! but if you prefer that your cymbal gives away at the fullest possible, and lives a long life, you'd better learn the things Jared says here

  • @cadben
    @cadben 11 років тому

    I don't completely agree about not tilting the cymbals away from you. Obviously if it's ridiculously tilted it's bad, but if it's slightly tilted, I find it can be helpful. If the crash is particularly low, it can prevent you from hitting the bow a lot, and you can reach over it enough to hit the crash properly without hacking the edge because it's low enough.
