  • Hello! Welcome back to my another unboxing video of stuff.
In this video I show an everyday watch by Minus 8 Watches whose watches have been under my radar for quite some time. Several years ago when I was searching for unique-yet-minimal-and-functional watches I came across with the Layer from this company. I really liked the design and the colour combination (blue-silver). However, it was a bit too big to my taste and it was close to USD500, which was beyond my budget.
Several years forward they made the Layer 2.0, which is smaller and in a more affordable price (USD338+welcome discount), still retaining some of the design elements that I like.
The Layer 2.0 features a 42mm stainless steel case with a slightly domed sapphire crystal top. Inside is a Seiko NH35A movement which is a popular choice amongst microbrands -- affordable and robust. At 130.4g of weight and 14.2mm of thickness I'd say it's on the slightly bulky side. But the proportion is great and it doesn't get in the way. The oversized 3-6-9 numbers on the dial really give the boldness look to the watch, and the contrast between the hands and the dial make time-reading easy. The rubber strap is thick but flexible, giving a secure but comfortable wearing experience.
There is a lot of attention paid to the details. The crown and the strap bear the logo of the company, and the groves at the case's profile view appear to be showing the layers inside the watch creating that nice 3-D effect (probably also why it's called Layer).
A pleasant surprise when I was preparing the content of this video is that this watch is designed by a studio who create a lot of things I really like without even knowing: Astro Studios.
When I looked into some background about this watch, I realized the designing studio also created some stuff that I already have because I liked their design and functionality: the Nike Fuelband and The Sol Republic Tracks HD. So good job guys! I think what I appreciate are the subtle details embedded in the minimalistic, industrial, and futuristic design. If you say I have a preferred style, I think it's pretty clear this is my preferred style.
At is full price (USD398) I think this watch is still a bit expensive. If it is between USD250 to USD350 (referencing similar specs from Kingsbury and Spinnaker) it'll be a great buy.
    Enjoy!
