I was going to go with the Messor Barbarus but I couldn't find anywhere that sold them to Australia (best deal was 1000$ shipping). Hope it goes well. I'm still deciding on my own first queen.
I fell into the ant world unintentionally.. found a Mymercia queen wandering in my garage recently I'm thinking pyriformis.. 3 months later and she has month old larvae. Didn't spend a cent either! Found some polytubing and a sistema tub 😂 Now I want more queens! 😩
I caught four foul smelling ant queens and shoved them together in a tube around three weeks ago, and now they have an insane mountain of larvae, hope they live long enough to produce the next generation :)
Irido is literally my first queen, I caught her at work in a water bottle a few months ago, I had already been watching AC and other channels like yours for years, but it sent me $1000 into a bunch of outworld and nest purchases and the waiting game. She currently has just hatched 3 workers. The cold weather despite using a heating cord to keep her little area warmer than it would normally be, has had her brood taking quite a while to get going. I bought myself a yellow spiny tail from Queen of Ants not long ago. It's taking her a lot longer to lay her brood though.
Hi remember me? I'm the person who had the Rattle ant queens. Since then the colony has grown to more then 8 workers but that growth has ended due to it being winter here. I was just wondering if Rattle ants were polygynous because I have seen a colony with more than one queen in my local park, Although I am not sure that the queens I saw were just alates with no wings. Congrats on 7.1K!
that's safe, best to feed them organic food if possible. I've found that most ant species will vary on what they like. Most like a thin slice of apple, you could try that
A lot more than a year go hey! Thanks man, I appreciate all the support from all the videos you've given. It's people like you and comments like these that really make my day!
The first queen ants i caught, which are also the only ones i own right now, are Camponotus fallax, Camponotus vagus and a myrmica. Also lasius niger is one of the best ants for begginers since they eat everything and can live in a dumpster.
My first queen was Camponotus Herculeanus I caught last year. I love bigger Camponotus species as they are cool and strong. It currently only has about 3 workers though.😅
It might be too cold, or perhaps there are a lot of vibrations and noise around her. I would give her a very small drop of honey and let her try again.
Hello Ant keeper. A few months ago i got my own Ant‘s. I would love to Film them but i dont know with what Camera. What do I have to pay attention to or can you recommend something for close-ups and low light Videos ? or can you recommend me a specific video camera? I would be happy to hear your answer. Keep up the great work !
Thank you for your awsome videos. i myself keep a couple of ant species, also camponotus but i never knew that they like high humidity. I reckon thats part of the reason that some of them took a long time to grow.
At my property I have a variety of red bull ants , meat ants , green-headed ants , banded sugar ants and little black ants/black longhorn ants (that I’ve discovered) so I’m thinking which one to get and wait for there nuptial flights.
kind of off topic i got a aphenogaster longceps colony delivered to me about 1 week ago which came with 3 workers and a queen the colony hasnt got any new workers in that week is that normal?
I’m thinking about starting a small ant farm but my main concern is the colony getting too big and needing too Much space. Is there a way to keep my colony relatively small
I had pet ants as a kid but they mysteriously disappeared I got a replacement colony which also disappeared now I have 2 colonies of ants in the bathroom
For me I am a child carpenter ants very expensive experience literally bought it and then one day later died because of ghost ants wow not really for a beginner like me

My 6 years old nephew and I just started our first colony with Messor Barbarus, we are in western Europe, hope it goes well
Just make sure they get sugar and protein for protein worms are great and for sugar honeys are great
No, messor ants mainly consume seeds. Add sugar water, fruits and protein for variety.
Yeha

Nice to see you picked up a Pheidole antipodum too. I hope she does well for you. I was able to get some from TheAntLab and hope they found nicely.
I think the Pheidole a. would be my favourite of all the smaller ant species. I considered buy a few more just incase but didn't get around to it lol

Wow that's awesome! Yeah its crazy how long other ant species take in comparison to raise their brood. I'm glad your having success! Great Job!

I'm not sure for certain, I had a colony with 2 queens for about 6 months, then both the queens died. So maybe!

Can't go wrong with a good Camponotus
You timed this perfectly
His long videos finally came back! 🎉❤
Aye!
D9 a tutorial on iridomymrex bicknelli or purpreus pls
It's on the list of ideas! lol.
if you see a big black greenish ant, don’t pick it up, as it is called Green Head Ant as they can bite and sting a venomous sting.
I started with lasius flavus, however now that I am a little bit more experienced I regret not choosing something like messor barbarous instead.
how do you catch an ant queen when its not the right month for their mating flights?
Is easy to start with a lasius Niger?
At my property I have a variety of red bull ants , meat ants , green-headed ants , banded sugar ants and little black ants/black longhorn ants (that I’ve discovered) so I’m thinking which one to get and wait for there nuptial flights.
I live in NZ so i dont have campanotus but i do have irido though and Amblyopone australis ( the largest here)
Camponotus ants can sting like every other species of ant but there sting is less painfull then any other species bc they are build to bite.
Wow, I've never been stung by a Camponotus and I've picked up hundreds! Must be lucky!
Are your sure that Camponotus have a stinger ? I don't think so.
They can spray formic acid but don't inoculate venom
kind of off topic i got a aphenogaster longceps colony delivered to me about 1 week ago which came with 3 workers and a queen the colony hasnt got any new workers in that week is that normal?
Very normal, especially in winter.
What about Pogonomyrmex badius?
Great first ant!
I’m thinking about starting a small ant farm but my main concern is the colony getting too big and needing too Much space. Is there a way to keep my colony relatively small
what do you think of aphenogaster longiceps for beginners?
Great beginner ant!
My first ant was solonopsis geminita and my queen has her first adult larvae
What is the gap in the middle of a lot of your setups for? Is that airflow, or is it some sort of refillable water chamber?
Hi, thanks for the nice video! What camera are you using?
Are pavement ants good for beginners because it has never worked any other time.
do you have any recommendations for nest brands for tetramorium immigrans?
I use test tubes. They recently had their nuptial flights in Minnesota and I caught 11 lol.
saturn nest is good
Anything that is escape proof would be perfect I think. www.estheticants.com has some pretty good nests.
i caught a few weaver ant queens and a fire ant queen but sadly they all died. the colony im keeping now is a camponotus irritan
TheAntKeeper what happened to the green weaver ants colony?
I think brachmermix patigonicus is also a really good species for bigginers
I had pet ants as a kid but they mysteriously disappeared I got a replacement colony which also disappeared now I have 2 colonies of ants in the bathroom
hey man i am buying black carpenter are they good for beginner
What type of carpenter ant was in the video
Do you still upload to this page ?
Lovely vid!
What about termites
I wonder if piss ants are included in the list?
In Philippines we have lots of fire ant queens at night every june
True man, true.
Yoo I haven’t seen you upload a vid I. A while
I'm an Italian, and whenever I will, I'll try to take a red-head ant queen at the perfect time, before I have to buy a test tube tbh-

to this day, he never said what ant species is best

Help me because I gave my queen 25 roaches for my 640 ants and 2 queens. And now one queen died and 235 ants died (around that number)
Probably ,if you caught roches from wild they might be sprayed with pesticides.
Agreed
i found three queen ants when it werent the nupital flight (i found randomly):/
