He is doing well, and appreciative of all the kind words and support. I will be posting a follow up video sometime in January. UPDATE: 9/22/22 I saw Carlos again two days ago. We had a nice talk, which lasted longer than the previous time. He remembered me, and even where I lived in 2007. I gave him some help, and told him of all the nice comments and offers to help from this video. We coordinated to meet again in about a month, and have tentatively planned a follow up video about him. He said the tunnel was cleared out about 10 years ago, but didn't remember the exact year. He thinks it had to do with Amtrak cleaning up all the graffiti, as well as all the construction and other activity right at the entrance to the tunnel. _________________________________________________________________________________________ UPDATE to address some recurring comments: I saw Carlos a few weeks ago - it had been a while since I last saw him, so it was a pleasant surprise. He didn't remember me, but seemed to be doing ok. He was listening to the scripture, and wouldn't talk too much, but he confirmed some things others have told me about the tunnel. I don't know where he lives now, but I have an idea of the general neighborhood he is in (I won't share that info). He does seem to be "homeless" still. I hope to find him again in a month or so to check in on him. There was at least one other video of Carlos (unrelated to mine) that came out about 2008 -ish. This video was a co-production between a French company and the Sundance Channel. Sundance released the segment with Carlos on their show "Full Frontal Fashion." In that video Carlos repeated a prediction made by Harold Camping (a Christian radio personality) that the world would end in 2011. The start of this judgement day was supposed to start on May 21, 2011 and culminate on October 21, 2011. In that other video, Carlos said "May twenty-one" instead of "May twenty first," so viewers thought he was referring to May 2021. It appears that video blew up in popularity during 2020, and the person who posted it has since made it private. A copy has been uploaded, and can be found on youtube. If you listen closely he does say "2011" at one point, but it is hard to understand. The French documentary about the freedom tunnel is called "dans les entrailles de new york" and is also on youtube. Carlos spoke about this prediction/prophecy when I filmed him also - I didn't include it, because as far as I can tell, it didn't happen. If you listen closely, during some sections of my video you can hear the radio show in the background - he listened to "Family Radio" pretty much all the time. I saw another documentary from around 2013? that briefly showed the opening to Carlos' home - his voice can be heard coming from inside declining to be on camera. He says that the cops had already come through that day. It is certainly possible that those videos, and others, plus articles and blog posts about the Freedom tunnel got Carlos and the others removed. This tunnel and it's residents have been in the news since the 1990s - there was even a Jerry Springer episode about it. I think it is also possible that gentrification contributed. There has been a ton of money put into that neighborhood, from both developers and the city. The whole area is much more active than it used to be. Plus the area where Carlos lived, and entered the tunnel is actually being used now. Amtrak has maintenance trains, extra track and other equipment right there. They installed lights, so the whole area is much brighter. The park maintenance crews are also right near the entrance, storing their lawn mowers, etc. It would be much more difficult to go unnoticed now than it would have in 2007-2008 when I first visited the tunnel. I also heard that the people were cleared out of the tunnel due to flooding from hurricanes in recent years. Unfortunately without finding the person who gave the order to remove everyone, there is no way to know the why people were removed.
Not to be negative but by my pure intuition he may be under the assumption you had a dealing with why he was thrown out EXE your video taping, obviously it wasn't you, but why would he act as if he dosent know you.....He knows you he just sees you potently as a negative force since hes heavily religeous may want to clear it up with him if you ever the chance
@@marklugario8806 yeah maybe, or he is under the influence of something. I mean he did say it was hard for him to hold down a job. He’s likely an addict. Many homeless get there due to mental illness and or addiction. It doesn’t make them bad people at all, in fact he seems very pleasant. It does make leading a ‘normal’ life impossible, however.
TBF, you don't get to be rich by being nice. You need to be cutthroat and outsmart the law as well as rules of business. You need to pay for a good lawyer and listen to every word they say. You need to diversify your investments and never trade on emotion. You need to be able to make others poor in order to benefit yourself. You need to be able to walk over others to get them out of the way for the road you pave to wealth. You need to be able to drop friends and family just so that you can make money. You have to make your life all about making more money, or you lose it all. Then when you are wealthy enough to live comfortably and maintain that wealth off dividends, then MAYBE you might have an ounce of peace like many people that live in poverty get. Though that almost never happens, and I mean by being rich and then just retiring/stopping. Making money is just as addictive as any illicit drug. There's no remorse, if only that you wish you should have screwed over more people to get more money. The kind of people that get to be rich, don't know how to stop, and will never stop. The kinds of people that see what they have become and want out, end up losing it all, or more often, never making it in the first place. Life is unfair and you only get one shot at it.
When a man prefers to live in a literal sewer instead of a shelter provided by the city because is too "wicked", that definitely tells you something about the city's shelter management.
The guy basically had his own room, computer, and private space. Also, no one checking if he's staying off drugs. Not a lot of shelters can provide that.
I’ve almost been homeless before; all it takes is a perfect storm: A illness turns into missed work, turns into loss of job, turns into loss of benefits, turns into blowing through your savings to stay alive; mix in the fact that you have no living family to help except for your two daughters that are in elementary school, and before you know it, you’re destitute with little to no options. It’s easier than you think to one day wake up in Carlos’ situation. I hope he continues to do well for himself.
I really hope you're doing good and you're healthy again. As a German it really blows my mind to read your comment. That wouldn't happen here, because we have healthcare for everybody and when you get sick, your employer has to continue to pay you for six weeks and after that, the insurance will pay you two thirds of your regular income.
that's true but depends on the illness right? not saying i disagree just saying people can still have an illness and still be able to go to work, for example me i've had 5 surgeries (got an infection in my leg when i was born and due to that i was born 2 months early was supposed to be born in april but was born in february instead) and i can still go to work. Like i say depends on the illness how bad it is, i understand some are worse than others, but it's not impossible
Yes. Carlos is smart and he also looks healthier than many people who have jobs and houses as their homes. Carlos is not homeless. He has more than one home.
True, but obviously. It wasn't a god at all, but the waste of America. Revealing how wasteful we really are as a society and how much bounty we actually have.
Heart wrenching ending. Dude didn't bother a single soul. He didn't steal. He scavengend trash and ate expired or discarded food. He lived in a hole in the ground, but even that was taken from him. Hope he's doing alright, wherever he is.
I was homeless for about 2 years. Thank you for showing him respect. Being poor is not a crime. Thank you so much for other gratitude and helping him. I love if you were able to find Carlos and get an update.

Still here illegally. Send him back home with all the money from the gofundme. I'm not heartless, I just don't think we should be giving handouts to those that have been for so long illegally.
Who cares. The people who come here illegally are what make up NYC’s economy. They are hard workers. Maybe we should stop giving money away to poor whites who are perfectly capable of working but are lazy.
You know that is sad, Carlos was not hurting no one, and used a space that no one was using to make a home. You can tell he was proud of it as if it were a million dollar home. It's people like him we need.
I mean the guy successfully did electrical work and has a functioning computer in his hole. That's pretty useful not to mention he has a working refrigerator and microwave.

There was a documentary or some shit that exposed Carlos and the people in the tunnel and that’s what got them removed. When he met Carlos again, that’s when he probably thought it was the right time to release the footage. He did the exact same thing with another person living in the tunnel who has since passed away. Also, he plans to meet up with Carlos again to give him the money
I’m sad for Carlos. He is so resilient and was happy. The authorities should have left him alone. We could learn a thing or two from Carlos. Prayers for him.
I pray for his safety and that he stays provided for, however God has rewards for such a man that we can't even comprehend. The man has nothing (by the worldly standards), but he has everything in spirit and the Lord! How can a man that has so little still be so appreciative of God? That's what he will be blessed for

I dont think he is an addict, or was one. He could have some sort of milder autism, making him "feel" strange, but he is a very intelligent guy, and you can see he is a hard worker in what he does in his daily life, not a lazy person.
He has predictions of doomsday, obviously mental patient who lives without treatment.........feel sorry for the guy, with right medication and little help he could have normal life.
What a remarkable man. I wish the world was like Carlos. A religious man, thoughtful, joyful and thankful even though he has so little. He’s obviously very smart someone should give him a job and bring him out into the world to shine
I can't help but admire the ingenuity of the living space Carlos made for himself in the tunnel. It is sad to know that they were pushed out of their homes that they worked hard to make for themselves. I have heard many stories myself in regards to the terrible living conditions found in some homeless shelters. I can't say I blame the guy for wanting to get out and live on his own.
What an angel. To be in such a miserable situation, but still be kind and happy. An example to us all. I hope he is well wherever he is. God bless Carlos.
Honestly the place looked cozy. Nobody to harass you, he gets his food, water, heating, electricity and most importantly he's away from humanity. I kind of envy the man in some ways.
That country management just suck as F!!! Where us human right?!! Or no one will question it because it not in middle east?🤣🤣 definition of hypocrisy!!
Being homeless sounds bad, but it can be a very smart decision for some people. I am currently and have many times before chose to be homeless. All the while, I still maintained employment. I don't need luxuries that come with a home. I shower at a fitness center and charge up my batteries there and that's about all I need extra. I save a lot of money not paying rent. The only way I would ever move into a home is if i got a girlfriend.
It’s amazing that he has a complete set up down there, with computer and printer, and cooking area. This man is extremely resilient and it’s very sad that the city kicked them out. I hope he’s been given a place to live as he seems like a gentle spirit who may just be too sensitive for the cutthroat and harsh world of most job environments - a challenging environment for even the toughest of people. Thank you for showing us his life.
He seems like such a kind soul. Definitely hasn’t let his situation impact his hope and willingness to thrive. Hopefully wherever he is today, he’s found a new home and a better place for himself.
If someone can't even live in a sewer without being picked on and kicked out Then there's no excuse for treating another human being so in humanly. God bless this adorable humble man.❤
And, God forsakes Eric Swanson. The man who published this video exploited Carlos's safe spot in the world. I am disappointed in seeing this video. Carlos shouldn't trust such people.

This is so sad yet so impressive. Sad because Carlos deserves decent accomodation, access to water, electricity and food, just like every human on Earth! Impressive because his spirit is strong and willing to do what it takes to survive.
Deserving access to something is morally different than deserving that something. Everything that requires human labor no one has a right to. Otherwise that would necessitate slaves to produce that something to provide it as the right. Slavery is immoral.
@@currnhyde3123 I'd like to ask this. What is the difference between being forced to work for a stable wage due to having to pay off a house and slavery? It's really just indentured service under another name. Indentured service is paying back ones debt with their service. If slavery is immoral, then the modern debt slave model is immoral. The trick in this modern society is that you are only in said indentured service if you allow yourself to accrue such debt. Only those without debt are not slaves, as they truly have freedom and won't face legal repercussions for defaulting on payments.
Nothing is stopping him but himself from having access to anything he needs to serve. I am sure he can walk down any street and see places that are hiring get a job and then be able to pay for electricity and food and water like everyone else does.

*The way Eric interacts with these people he’s doing videos about is different from others. He talks to them like they’re human. He doesn’t look down on them or talk down to them in the slightest. The way he went in that wee hole and did his very best to help with Carlos’ computer problem really warmed my heart. He was patient and kind, and showed total respect*
What amazes me is the self respect and the dignity and pride he shows, in how much he cares for the tidiness of his house, in the request for taking off your shoes before going in, and in all the things he made himself to have a decent and respectable (given the conditions) accomodation. This one is a true gentleman, no matter the absence of a suit or a tie
Perhaps, but he is choosing not to work anymore as well. He looks fairly clean, what has kept him from holding down basic work? There are jobs where you could just show up looking like a bum and still get paid (on site construction work as a big example where they just want cheap labor).

I learned something very important from Carlos: your attitude defines your whole life. He lived in a sewer but kept it cool and had friends and was living a normal life without complaining of not having money or not having a conventional house to sleep. Thanks to him for that, I'm sure we all can improve our attitude towards something right now :)
How horrible that these ppl , who were not bothering anyone, just living their lives as best as they could, yet they had to be moved. I think that’s horrible. I’d like to know where he is now and how he is doing. This video was so heartwarming until the last few minutes. Now I am sad because I don’t know what happened to this guy or the other people. Godspeed to this gentle human being.
it is but i can also understand it on the other hand. the city is potentially responsible/liable for anything that happens in those unmanaged, unmonitored sewers. there is potential for poor air quality, or if there was serious flooding like there was a few years back that killed a bunch of people living in NY living in non-permitted/illegal apartments - the city could potentially have huge lawsuits on their hands for allowing the opportunity for people to stay there if something went wrong. I do hope he found somewhere safe.
@ton-618 male shelters are horrible places as he mentioned, that's why so many choose to live on the streets instead, seeing as how men are expendable, even by family, it's tough, especially since people are now killing the homeless indiscriminately
At the end of the day, we all need to work to live. We make choices. Many homeless people were/are drug addicts and while still quite bad, is understandable why they will be unlikely to ever get back on their feet. Then you have people like this man. Yes, a nice guy and respectful. However, he still choosing not to work and is content getting free, nearly expired food out of dumpsters to stay alive. All the while living off of free electricity the rest of the city is paying for; full of people who are working day in and day out to afford said electricity.

I’ve lived on the streets, had my own spot that was safe and preferred living there than council provided shelters that are full of drugs, and drug users and the problems they bring also being a recovering addict meant I could stay away from all that.I totally understand why this guy is where he is. It’s his safe spot
He can find a similar place somewhere. After all those years of urban survival, I'm sure he knows his way around. It's sad that he lost everything he had set up (refrigerator, microwave, computer etc...). He had a peaceful existence. Maybe things happen for a reason.
If you are reading this, Remember brother if you are a Christian, there is a verse in the Bible " Mark 10: 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” There are no shame being homeless and poor, we are all the same in the eye of our Lord and Father in heaven. I pray for you one day you will have a better life and own a small house and family.

It breaks my heart that they took him from his house that he loved and felt safe. He wasn't bothering anyone... I hope he finds another place to call home!
He and his clothes actually look really clean. Than makes me happy that he is able to have a shelter like that. Homeless people do not receive the respect and sympathy I feel they absolutely deserve. I used to be a homeless junkie and let me tell you, surviving that in Wisconsin, during the winter is something ONLY God could have gotten me through. Today, I just started my sophomore year at the University of Wisconsin Stout with a 3.65 GPA. I won 3 scholarships and I'm a mentor for freshman students. But that was only because the right people were there to help me just enough for me to get to where I am now. Something most homeless people just don't have whatsoever. It needs to change.

UPDATE: 12/9/22
I visited Carlos again the other day. He is doing well, and appreciative of all the kind words and support. I will be posting a follow up video sometime in January.
UPDATE: 9/22/22
I saw Carlos again two days ago.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
UPDATE to address some recurring comments:
I saw Carlos a few weeks ago - it had been a while since I last saw him, so it was a pleasant surprise.
Unfortunately without finding the person who gave the order to remove everyone, there is no way to know the why people were removed.
how do you not the remember the viking dude with a camera you had around a and in your house? lol

That's facts

I really hope you're doing good and you're healthy again. As a German it really blows my mind to read your comment. If slavery is immoral, then the modern debt slave model is immoral.

Have you ever seen a video where the interviewer is not respectful to the homeless people?
How would he proceed to make a documentary if he annoyed him the first second?
What amazes me is the self respect and the dignity and pride he shows, in how much he cares for the tidiness of his house, in the request for taking off your shoes before going in, and in all the things he made himself to have a decent and respectable (given the conditions) accomodation.

Losing a home is more than a heartbreak. The sewer was his only home and losing it is like losing a part of him and half his life. 🥺

it is but i can also understand it on the other hand. the city is potentially responsible/liable for anything that happens in those unmanaged, unmonitored sewers. there is potential for poor air quality, or if there was serious flooding like there was a few years back that killed a bunch of people living in NY living in non-permitted/illegal apartments - the city could potentially have huge lawsuits on their hands for allowing the opportunity for people to stay there if something went wrong.
I do hope he found somewhere safe.
I hope he just said that so no one would go down there and bother them.
@ton-618 oh ya the government fixes everything they touch, great idea.

In the end of video they tell that he was removed from this place :(
He can find a similar place somewhere. After all those years of urban survival, I'm sure he knows his way around. It's sad that he lost everything he had set up (refrigerator, microwave, computer etc...). He had a peaceful existence. Maybe things happen for a reason.

If you are reading this, Remember brother if you are a Christian, there is a verse in the Bible
" Mark 10: 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
There are no shame being homeless and poor, we are all the same in the eye of our Lord and Father in heaven. I pray for you one day you will have a better life and own a small house and family.
I use to sleep on rooftops and under bridges in Denver. The rooftops were nicer but people would surprisingly find you pretty quick up there..
The fact that this dude had built a PC from discarded computer parts and knew how to work on it just blows my damn mind. I was a teenager back in 2007 and I had a computer for nearly 6 years at that point and I barely knew how to add a second hard drive.

@@Dankshin0bi he's likely unable to keep a job due to have social problems. He has somewhat of a priest's dedication to God. In the actual original video, he comes out of the man hole asking if Swanson believes in Jesus as his savior and that he will return. That was before even saying hello.

I’m 24 and homeless in Charlotte NC, this inspired me to keep going. It’s hard, especially because it’s cold. I currently sleep in a tent behind my job. I don't know how I ended up on this video but I'm glad I did. Such a great story and video. Carlos seems amazing. He made such an amazing little home. Love how much pride he took in his place. I was definitely shocked when I saw the computer. So cool that he had all that stuff all without being a thief. A man of God. Totally sucks they kicked them out. The shelters need to change and actually help these people. He obviously could use it.
I'd think one would be beset by Rats
They could help a lot by just leaving people like Carlos alone, unless they have something better to offer, which clearly they do not.
Carlos seems like a good guy and it's a shame he lost his home. He was so proud of his place and it looks like he worked really hard on it. I hope he's ok and I would love to see an update on him if possible

Carlos seems like a quality dude. The first thing he shared was his faith and I can see it in his conversations and actions. Glad he shared with us and hoping he’s doing alright.
This was amazing. And sad. He was hurting no one. With all the waste of the city, he could have the small amount of electricity he used. God bless you, Carlos. May the Lord make a way for you.
He even got a pc working..
there was more than 1 guy living in that tunnel there was 6.. all connected to the same line...
It breaks my heart that they took him from his house that he loved and felt safe. He wasn't bothering anyone...

👏👏 👏 stay the course! ✨⭐️
Thank you for sharing. Stay strong, and keep mentoring - you're paying it forward
how did you get where you are now? crazy respect!

Hey man, those last couple sentences hit really deep but in a good way. I think it's really badass of you to recognize the help you got from the right people, and how you still want much better for others. Thanks, homie. Keep killing it out there
My wife used to work for the city (NYC) up until last year. She used to tell me horror stories about the government run shelters. I never believed it was so bad until I went on a ride-along with her.

Not necessarily. He was moved out of there but he is a constructive and resourceful individual, and will make his circumstances better wherever he ends up. Some other people you can give everything to and they would not be content until they had pissed it all away.
