      also love that Jingles believes ( hopes ?) he is still in the EU.. Because since Brexit, the UK is legally independent, ahem "strong and autonomous" and does not get most of the EU's legal protections (anymore)... so special terms and conditions apply on the North Side of the Channel.

    Jingles, a couple of years ago, I took a chance on the Epson Eco Tank printer range. I wanted to be able to print A3/A3+ prints, I am a nature photographer. This range of printers is by far the best that I have ever had and I have had a few, including HP crap. To fill/refill inks is simplicity itself. Purchase either Epson ink or compatible ink and the results are near perfect. I am amazed at how little ink is used, even for an A3/A3+ print. Next time you need a reliable printer try Epson Eco Tank. You might be impressed.

      I recommended the same printer to my mother in law. She really likes it too. After getting fed up with not being able to print because of one cartridge, I myself switched to a laser printer. Never going back to ink cartridge.

    Mighty Jingles,
    Next time instead of tossing the gummed up ink cartridge and buying a new one, take some isopropyl alcohol (the kind you buy in the drug store), wet a Q-Tip with it and clean the print head where the ink comes out.
    The old dried up ink will dissolve, get picked up by the Q-Tip, wipe the ink head with a clean Q-Tip and the old ink cartridge should become usable again, providing there is still ink in it.

    As far as printers go, I have had great success with "brother" laser printers. Work great, last forever and you can use aftermarket refills if you want. Only downside is that color models are pricy.

    • @roberteltze4850
      @roberteltze4850 9 місяців тому +1

      And to top it off you're getting a laser printer which is far better than an ink-spitter. My color Brother laser printer was only $200, that isn't bad when you consider they aren't selling at a loss and that you aren't replacing gummed up cartridges every year.
      Also with all printers when you are printing black & white make sure to click the box for B&W in the print dialog window, otherwise it will make black by combining color inks.

    I used to buy Hewlett Packard printers back in the day when they had some of the first quality black laserjet printers but I ceased that when 2000 came around as there were many other printers and I found hp printers seemed to have paper feed problems frequently which required me to disassemble them to rough up the rollers inside which proved to be quite difficult.
    I also gave up using inkjet printers for the very reason you say - the cartridges are way too expensive and they dry up. Laser is the only way to go and I have very successfully had a colour Dell printer for 20 years. No problems at all, and although Dell no longer sells printers and ink refills, the refills are readily available with few problems from third party sources. Even now, if this printer finally dies it would have been an excellent purchase for the number of years and the literally thousand and thousands of black and white, and colour pages I have printed with it - and it has never had paper feed troubles either! I looked recently to see if Dell still sells printers and sadly they gave up a few years ago to my sorrow!
    So what would be a quality printer now? I don't know!

      I've never bought anything from Apple but back when their products were actually good, I was getting an iPad for my birthday at discount because my mum had a friend who worked in an Apple store and my mum wanted to know if I'd rather have the iPad 1 on my birthday (about 13 years ago) or the iPad 2 a week later (because the iPad 2 hadn't actually been put on shelves yet). I asked for the iPad 1 because as far as I knew at the time, the iPad 2 was a slightly more compact iPad 1 that also had a camera.

    • @georgedyson9754
      @georgedyson9754 9 місяців тому

      I think it is like many items these days - they look cheaper and people are scared by the higher initial prices of laser printers. I don't know how many people really consider long term costs any more. Buying things is all about the immediate price, it seems to me, these days as we live in a throw away society. Many products are also unserviceable and intentionally there are no parts with which to fix them.Apple even serialises key components that are not permitted to be sold by the large electronic components dealers. It is all about buy new and not permitting products to be fixed if they go wrong.
      In the US, right to repair crusaders have been fighting mightily for legislation requiring products to be serviceable and repairable but it is a hard battle when lobby companies happily pay large sums of money to politician's campaign funds on behalf of manufacturers to prevent legislators supporting such laws. Some of the reasons stated by such lobby firms saying as you mentioned that someone might install a virus, or even Tik-Tok on your device while it is being fixed are not uncommon How much does the non-electronic geek know about such things given the average age of a politician? @@mynameiswritinwater

    For other reasons, I don't like huge equipment, back in 2015 when I decided I want a printer and a scanner, I went that way. I bought a separate flatbed scanner and printer. I have the printer in its box, out of the view unless I need it. The scanner takes so much less space, it is better looking, and I have no need for the printer to be around when all I want is scan things.
    Though the last time I had a printer/scanner all in one was many years ago and I don't think I had such issues as you. Thankfully.
    And yes, I haven't actually used either of them since 2015.

    I remember getting stung by Epson on the whole nope , you can print black because your yellow cartridge is empty; or nope, you can't scan because you've got no ink. At that point I just started buying laser printers, usually second hand; and they lasted for YEARS, before needing new toner. Then I'd just find another used laser with some toner, for less than the price of toner for the old printer. Been doing that for about 15 years now.

    So now wehn ever I need to print somthing I just go to the local liebrary and print it for 20 cents a page in high quality. So much more cheaper then keep buying new ink!

    There are actually important legal differences between letting go/laying off and firing. Firing means the person was terminated from their contract due to performance, I.e. it was the employee's fault. While laying off is deemed no fault of the employee and is essentially the company admitting fault. This has some major implications on job searches and for getting unemployment benefits. Being fired looks bad while being laid off looks about the same as quitting.

    Printers: under the circumstances you're describing, I'd blame the printer manufacturers less than your own ignorance. News flash: You don't have to own or use an inkjet printer to print. The manufacturers all make other kinds. If a customer came to my computer repair shop and told me that their printing needs were for a few documents a year and they used the scanner a lot, I'd immediately recommend that they buy an All-in-One laser printer. Laser printers (just a name, no actual lasers are involved) use a powder called toner instead of ink. And since it's a powder, it's already dry and so never causes a problem due to shelf life. Toner is more expensive than ink per cartridge, but one will print on average between 2,500 to 3,000 pages of text before needing to be replaced.
    Laser printers come in two flavors. Black and white only, or color. Black and white would probably do just fine since all you use your printer for is a few non-photographic documents. And B&W laser printers are fairly cheap compared to the color ones.
    Color laser printers aren't very good at photographs; they prefer simple color schemes like colored text. That's where inkjets are much better to own. But if you don't print photos, then a B&W laser printer is going to be an investment that you probably will thank yourself for making because a single toner cartridge will easily last you for years.

    Yep. And if an HP printer cartridges firmware can somehow infect the computer it's attached to, that simply points out how horridly insecure HP's printer firmware must be in the first place. Neither cartridge OR printer firmware should EVER BE ABLE to to run any executable or upload any data to the computer itself that is not sandboxed by it's function!
    If their printer firmware is that insecure, how is it proof against wireless directed attacks?
    Wow. lol
    Good episode. Thanks

  • @ivo215
    @ivo215 9 місяців тому

    If I may, don't buy a color printer when you hardly ever need to print anything. A B&W printer will do nicely in most cases. And if you get the option to buy a B&W laserprinter, then do so. Toner cartridges don't dry out. There can be problems with those too, but rarely do those problems develope from sitting still in your home. And for modest home use, it could be years before you need to replace the first toner cartridge. They may be a bit more expensive up front, but they aren't in the long run. Lexmark makes good quality printers (formerly the manufacturer of IBM peripherals), though the cartridges are expensive. Brother makes a decent printer too, and the prices aren't too crazy. They haven't lowered themselves to the depths of HP, yet. And they have all-in-ones. I previously had a Konica Minolta B&W laserprinter, that lasted me for 20 years.

I have a HP1320N which is a monochrome duplex A4 network printer intended for office use and widely used in that role. This takes 3rd party toner cartridges which can be bought online for as little as £10 and each one lasts 'ages' depending on how much printing you do of course! From a quality point of view I cannot distinguish between this printer and the contemporary models used in my day job.

    Been using a Brother laserjet with scanner for several years now and am happy to not be paying HP any money although somehow I probably am. Their stance as far as I have seen is, "We won't block you using 3rd party ink but do recommend ours as a known quality." I haven't changed the toner cartridge in years and it just scanned the other day too.
    And no better time to jump over from WoW and give XIV another try.

    My god, that thing about the printer ink chips reminds me of that episode of The IT Crowd where they tell Jen - who’s a bit of a technophobe - that a small, black, hollow box with a red light on it is “the internet” expecting her to get ripped to piss when she presents it.
    But then everyone else there actually believes the lie as well.
    Except Jen in this case is HP’s legal practitioner lol.

    Jingles, about the EU making Apple allow other charging cables and they being maliciously complying - the story is a bit longer than that.
    The EU smacked Apple around with a few fines before they said "fine, we'll allow them to use 3rd party cables but we're throttling the charging speed". Trouble is EU found out about that maliciousness and smacked them around a few more times for doing it. EU may suck...but every so often, once every blue moon or so, they have a good idea.

      agreed, I mean half of iphones used to be made by Samsung who make very good android phones. Nowadays while it isn't Samsung components it is still 3rd party manufacturers going into an iphone while 90% of components in a samsung phone is still Samsung.
      Basically you are paying a premium for a brand...which in all intents and purposes are inferior to other products on the market.

    Ink printers shouldn't be allowed to be manufactured anymore. The ink is usually crap anyway, aftermarket inks have all manner of quality and reliability problems, and when they use them, customers think they're going to get a 128AUD print head/carriage assembly for free under warranty?
    All the electrostatic systems I work with, though, seem to take Katun cartridges quite happily... ink systems really seem to have no real use any more.

    When your tech starts to tell you that its only compatible with other tech from the same manufacturer its time to find another provider of harware. For me the last time i even considered Apple products was 2010 when my girlfriend at the time could not add me in viber because i had an android. She literaly could not find my device alto i could find hers and her friend was able to find my device. Also we lived together at the time so this wasnt a case of her ghosting me. She was about 3 years late for that. Never buy overpriced garbage with a fancy logo and branding.

    There are ink printers you can purchase that use ink tank reservoirs instead or cartridges, so you can store a lot more ink in them. Or you could get a laser printer which uses toner that is more expensive but doesn't dry out. Unless you absolutely must use an Apple product to do some kind of work, I don't see any benefit of using them over non-Apple devices. The intentionally designed to be restrictive platform does not benefit you, only Apple, so I don't use their products myself.

  • @spellsecurity

    I do tech support for a living and printers are just like everything else in life: you get what you pay for. That said, HP is notoriously scummy and I have long since stopped recommending anything from them, especially after their takeover of the Samsung printer division (most HPs are rebadged Samsungs these days and not even the good Samsungs).
    If you're a home user, the choice is simple: if you need color, Epson Ecotank, if you need monochrome laser, Brother 27XX series. Anything else, you're better off going to a print shop and if you're a business, well, Ricoh is your friend.

    I'm hoping that by now you've realised you could buy a printer that uses toner instead of ink and have a lot less problems with it drying up. I bought my parents a combi scanner/printer that uses toner about 10 years ago now and I don't think we've ever had problems or even had to replace the toner yet (they print less than even you do to be fair)
    Pretty sure it's an Epson but can't remember what model. Likely not sold anymore anyway.
