Lisa's a masterclass in character writing and when to be funny and when to be grim also knows how to actually make the RPG Battle mechanics interwoven into the story/gameplay. Definitely a landmark game that should be studied by future game devs.
I think the reason why Lisa works so well in switching between comedy and tragedy is that the entire world is both funny and tragic in many ways. For example, the reason the characters look so ugly and goofy is because the world of Olathe is so unwelcoming that basically nobody has a chance to care about their looks, and if they do, chances are they've lost their minds to boredom or loneliness; this is both funny and tragic at the same time, and you can make a funny gag from this as easily as you can make a very sad one where one of the characters spews his worst feelings out bare. One of the reasons Lisa is my favorite game is that a lot of the resources it utilizes arent of high quality, if Im not mistake a good chunk of the games soundtrack was made with the trial version of Fruity Loops, and yet it elevates all of them by being designed in a very intelligent way.
It really did hurt to damage Ricky like that the first time, and I love that, having to do things not because I want but because the protagonist wants, is a feeling so rare to have in a game but is a feeling so awesome, specially in a genre where almost every single protagonist is meant to be a self insert for the player.

Especially Rebound, if you're looking for something similar gameplay wise in a totally original setting and artstyle
@@coalnose forgot about Lisa the Hopeful tbh, but I remember there is a supposed sequel being developed for it too There's just way too many fascinating and interesting fan games being developed so far for Lisa
I feel like Lisa The Painful is the anti undertale of RPGs. In Undertale, you're given choices to be a good person. *You* are the one calling the shots, and can create a peaceful ending for your characters. Lisa The Painful is never about you creating peace for Brad. This is Brad's downfall and you're only a spectator in this dystopia. You don't have choices. You fucked up the moment you hit "New Game".
Personally I think Brads right, giving buddy off to a gang who might not have the best intentions before she’s even old enough to make such a decision is pretty bad. It wouldn’t be so bad had they let her stay until she was older, it’s not like brads gonna raise her forever. But anyway, I really enjoyed the video, I didn’t expect some of these jokes lmao
he's wrong in hindsight, considering Rando absolutely would have taken good care of her. but considering he didn't know Rando at all, the state of Olathe, and his trauma I totally don't blame him. though upon learning Rando was a super good guy, and buddy even specifically asking to go with them he's not entirely in the right. though he was basically manipulated by both Buzzo and his own trauma to the point that he has agency problems so I can't call him evil.
@@polocatfan I think it’s implied that “saving the world” would pretty much start as soon as possible, aka not once she’s of age to be able to make such a decision. To brad, buddy absolutely was influenced into thinking this was a good idea when she can’t even grasp the true reality of it. A nice compromise would be letting Brad continue to raise buddy but under the protection of randos army, in which brad has the support of them, but they won’t force buddy to undergo that treatment unless she’s okay with it when she’s older. Instead she was practically stolen, convinced into it, and the army wouldn’t even let him near her. Plus even though rando is a good guy, the ones actually performing the deed might not have the best intentions, suffice to say. Also, from brads point of view, he doesn’t realize it’s dusty. Even though at the surface level rando seems like a good guy, you don’t just give the child you’ve been raising all her life to a “nice person” you barely know. Especially when you know that good or not, his intentions are to have people do that stuff to her.
@@polocatfan Brad was being manipulated by Buzzo but he was also actively being mind controlled by Yado with his trumpet. Brad is a joy mutant from the beginning, how do you think he survives having his arm amputated, twice, with no medical care.
i didnt even play the game but simply watching videos about lisa the painful actually made me feel so empty for nearly an entire week genuinely the most a story had ever emotionally affected me
Lisa is such a good game, the history, the soundtrack, certain details (Like the use of LOVE in Buzzos fight aka Lisa's theme or the use of Soft Skin at the end of the game) really sell you the world and the story, making it a beatifull experience. Whoever reads this, buy the game NOW.
Omori and Lisa are sister games. Lisa is the older, edgier, and more cynical one. This has all of the drawbacks you'd imagine, but also all of the pros. Like having a funnier sense of humor, and better combat. I think I lost my analogy somewhere along the way but whatever I think you get what I mean.
One thing I like about this game is that while Brad is a bad person, the game makes it you see that the rest of the world is arguably worse, and wonder if it even _deserves_ a second chance. Humanity already does horrible things to women when its _not_ a barren wasteland, you'd have to be a fool to think that the men of Olathe would just wait until Buddy is a consenting adult before they go ahead with their 'repopulation' plan, given how much they've degenerated in the years. With how horrible things have gotten, it'd be impossible for Buddy to live a normal life if everybody just knew she was a girl; but living with somebody like Brad, who has many issues he's been saddled with, isn't better. Its a damned if you do damned if you don't situation, there's no easy way out no matter how you slice it, and it's one of the few games that does that kind of storytelling right.

From that point on, its up to the player, if Brad is strong enough to not take any Joy or if he succumbs to the urge.
Nice video, and good taste in games too. Word of advice tho, maybe pace the way you talk differently.
