jeff kaplan and his team struck gold then somehow mined dirt. -but with all seriousness i feel like designing the game around roles from the start was a shaky foundation let alone 4. like you said symmetra was proven to be a failed concept, and i think if the hero design weren't encumbered by roles, she could've kept her identity. designing the game around role's is the reason we get dps characters disguised as supports they're put in, e.g. kiriko, bap, and illari in support, they're all dps characters that also can heel, and the reason for this is to bribe dps players to play healer, except for release-brig who was a 5v5-tank disguised as a support hero. designing the game around role's is also the reason tanks are walking building you can't miss with you back turned away from them, because if they were smaller you couldn't justify them having at least extra 300hp than everyone else, without that extra hp on top of shields, barriers, armor, etc they wouldn't be able to do fulfil their role. at the end of the day roles are enforced jobs, and if you force players between 3 jobs they'll always choose the most fun or the least frustrating. -ultimate's were cool for like the 1st 3 seasons then they became that thing you get then hold onto till the enemy uses theirs, so it became a battle of will and patience. -sigma was such a badly designed hero that he still preformed well without a single change barring number changes in the move from 6v6 to 5v5. -as for MR it's way too early to judge considering its not even a month old. give it time till everyone has had their fill of its overpowerful abilities.
Seeing the part talking about how the new characters doesn't give us deeper in the lore and just more "groups" is something that I've never had thought, but it clicked with me That's why Rammatra was so hyped and talked and why I never seem someone talking about Venture, or Kiriko, or Juno And I will add: for a universe defined by the omnics, we LACK more of them that could deepen the lore or the perspectives of each faction
To be honest, I really hope that Overwatch is on a path to improving itself and Rivals stays relevant. The competition is going to be how both of these games become better than they could ever dream to be. Plus it would be pretty fun for us. It's like when mommy and daddy stop living together and now you get two Christmases of each side trying to win you over, hopefully without the psychological damage that the analogy brings as well!
Exactly what I am saying, it's nothing but a good thing for overwatch to have competition. Overwatch has stayed stagnant for so long because it had no real competitor for such a long time
Let me tell you. I just got back into overwatch two, just to get some trophies and possibly the platinum on PlayStation and it is by far the most aggravating shit ever. Anyone who has tried to get four kills with anyone’s ult. especially Cassidy/McCree, deserves the fucking purple heart
The Overwatch PVE was..... nothing short of a tragedy that can be.... avoided. The original trailer got like 6 skills, it's a start and can be iterated further hell you can just do it HOTS style and compensate with good mission and story. Instead Blizzard tried to put 3 Skill trees on 1 hero, the reason? Project Titan which was supposed to be Overwatch but MMORPG and then pulls out a captain obvious when Lifeweaver came out saying "designing 3 skill trees for pve is harder than designing 1 hero" and my response at the time was "WHO ASKED YOU TO DO A SKILL TREE!?"
Very likely the expectations outgrew the real results they had. Same thing that happened to Riot's MMO. People's expectations outgrew the reality, so they started from scratch again
@@nurikkulanbaev3628 Project Titan being the reason is what actually pissed me off, the project that failed so hard it became the reason for Diablo 4 not getting revealed soon enough and we had to do with Diablo Immortal "do you guys not have phones?" debacle in the first place. Blizzard tried to revive Project Titan which screams to me the devs never saw OW as what it is but what it was supposed to be and as we all know, the ghosts of the past rarely brings joyous tidings
Im someone who never actually experienced OG Overwatch. Characters that grasped my attention where echo, junkrat, bastion and torbjorn from the dps, Zenyatta from support and tanks were Sigma and Rammatra. I had no actual connection to the first overwatch, but i still could understand how fuckin bad it mustve felt for any long overwatch fan getting such a release and a broken promise in place of store update. I can confidently say Overwatch 2 has gone in the right direction a while ago with more fun character types who fit their class but also have a specific niche, except Rammatra who is an All Rounder... and sojourn and kiriko eating their cake and shoving it in your face too. While todays trend is shitting on the older member of a certain Genre of gaming, like marvel rivals players bragging how their game came out well made and basically bullying anyone who dares say they still like overwatch, you can still appreciate the competition being a good sign for Overwatch's development. Also even if Marvel Rivals takes over as a long stay King of PVP Hero Shooters, doesnt mean overwatch cant co-exist, people are just gonna look at it as everyone looked at anyone who dared to say they like Paladins more
I would rather have Marvel rivals take the crown honestly so it can get the attention while Overwatch needs to improve but Rivals is making it easier for them to do. More pressure, more focus consumer friendly content
I got stupidly lucky as a Junk one truck because he is still stupidly fun to play no matter what since they haven’t changed him much the only downside is that since everyone has more health so the two shot direct kill became three in a lot of cases which changes the way you have to play him
I wish we could gotta simpler "story modes" every time a new hero drops, maybe something cooker for that hero I don't know, Apex Legends managed to have storylines and plot with each hero Makes more PVE simpler modes (escort, defend, etc) but with big enemies to shoot it and add the "skill trees" that was promised
Finally, an objective review of the current hero shooter dynamic. You've done our constantly arguing community a great service. No matter what the two big dev teams in play do, I'll play what's fun. For my part, I appreciate the individual agency of 5v5 Overwatch more, but that's because I basically only solo queue or duo with my brother. I have enjoyed Rivals from a casual standpoint, but don't see it as something I would get into competitively. Blizzard really screwed the pooch on a lot of this IP, but the current cast at Team Four are clearly trying their best, and I welcome whatever wacky ideas they have coming down the line. (They really need to add hero bans yesterday). No matter what, though, the competition is healthy. With a bit of luck, we'll get two great yet distinct games that are fun for different corners of the hero shooter crowd. Best of luck to both devs and to you, Rowby. Happy New Year! May it bring a brighter future. -Sincerely, a Junkrat main 😁
I never really thought about it too much before now, but you articulated perfectly why it isn't as fun to play tank in 5v5. its way too much stress man
Not only a very concise and well explained recap of Overwatch so far, but you hit the nail on the head with the experience of playing Overwatch 1. I can without the shadow of a doubt say that it was Overwatch 1 in my final 6 months of play that soured my enjoyment of PvP multiplayer as a whole to this very day. Queing up for a match in casuals, only to have the choice between playing as the solo tank or the solo support on the team sucked all the fun out of any match, even if my team was actually winning it. It came to the point were playing Overwatch felt more like fulfilling a job, than having fun playing a character you liked. And don't make me even mention the abosulte toxic mindset of people in casual that ruined team comps because they couldn't be bothered to think a single second with their picks. Having to solo kill snipers and Genjis as Moira is a nightmare that will haunt me for a long time.
Great video. I like that you actually bought the PVE and gave it a shot despite all the content online about it, even playing through it with a friend. It's 10x better to spend 15 dollars on something you can actually play, 1000 coins and a skin than 19 dollars for a skin.

i really dont remember the comps being much better.... like comp was always a huge annoyance for me until they added roll lock cause the games were just gambling whether your team had an even distribution of people
like especially in quickplay where people didnt really care, i want to still have a chance of winning even though my team doesnt care and having a bad comp puts you so far behind that its just boring
My problem with changing the game to 5v5 is how it completely changes the game and how you may play it with friends. Where once you had 6 friends that could play, unless one of your friends already stopped playing, someone's gonna have to get cut
As someone who’s been with overwatch since it’s release I’ll say that I actually do enjoy 5v5 and playing tank makes it for more brawly and controlling when fighting hard. But if the game goes back to 6v6 I’ll adapt.
37:25 yooo mouthwashing reference! I NEED you to do a video on it, please! 49:20 and another one! Oh you can’t just do that! Please for the love of anything make a video about mouthwashing!
Not finished yet. Loving the video so far! But one correction i want to make - Sojourn wasn't the second-in-command of Overwatch. Ana was. Sojourn was a captain though.
We NEED more omnics characters, they could do so much to deepen the lore and the factions across Overwatch world Like we only TRULY have Zennyata and Rammatra Echo barely looks like one, Orisa feels more like a robot that was MADE, Bastion is cute but barely express himself
Show me another omnics in Rammatra dial that are not only "faceless voiceless evil robots", omnics working with Talon, with Overwatch or that are friends with others heroes/part of their communities and factions A omnic that DESPISE the junkers and has to hide fellow robots from them Stop threating them like "just robots" and more like the opresses people who caused a war and are now being radicalized to star ANOTHER
On the cosmetics thing, I don't mind Kiriko getting so many skins in her short life time, despite Mercy having a few more and being in since launch. My problem with Kirikk having so many skins is that 90% of them are exceptionally low-quality, but still get Legendary quality, meaning they cost like 30 bucks because the way the make premium coins cost you can't just get 2k and 500. Her Tatsumaki skin is just her base outfit, but it's black, she doesn't have the tights, and they changed her hair. Other characters get that treatment, but the skins are made Epic. Her Athleisure skin, once again, almost exactly her base skin, but in a jacket instead of the traditional garb she normally wears.
In Overwatch 5v5 you can feel that one person playing like shit will give you an auto loss while at the same time one person playing out of their mind will still lose you the game.

Seeing the part talking about how the new characters doesn't give us deeper in the lore and just more "groups" is something that I've never had thought, but it clicked with me
That's why Rammatra was so hyped and talked and why I never seem someone talking about Venture, or Kiriko, or Juno
And I will add: for a universe defined by the omnics, we LACK more of them that could deepen the lore or the perspectives of each faction
Babe wake up Rowby posted
Go into QP and use DVa bomb at a spot where there is nowhere to go
The Overwatch PVE was..... nothing short of a tragedy that can be....
W rowby can’t wait to get your shirt for Christmas you’re my favorite UA-camr have a happy holidays
It’s happening in marvel rivals too. People dont understand how a TEAM based game works. It’s really depressing
Fr it's depressing af I get paired with 3 attackers every time in comp
Paladins... now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
31:25 that is INSANE disrespect but it is oh so deserved.
Not even a minute in and I'm laughing. Have a good Christmas mate
Glad you like it!
This is really well made, props my guy
I got stupidly lucky as a Junk one truck because he is still stupidly fun to play no matter what since they haven’t changed him much the only downside is that since everyone has more health so the two shot direct kill became three in a lot of cases which changes the way you have to play him
Finding this after I’ve settled in Rivals feels pretty good, wishing y’all the best in the coming seasons ❤️

I wish we could gotta simpler "story modes" every time a new hero drops, maybe something cooker for that hero
I don't know, Apex Legends managed to have storylines and plot with each hero
Makes more PVE simpler modes (escort, defend, etc) but with big enemies to shoot it and add the "skill trees" that was promised
Really cool video. I don’t usually watch full hour videos in one sitting like this. Keep it up
Finally, an objective review of the current hero shooter dynamic.

20:58 i spilled my drink all over the screen in the most cartoony aah way possible, very funny
It's 10x better to spend 15 dollars on something you can actually play, 1000 coins and a skin than 19 dollars for a skin.
this video made me chuckle
A great video to end the year on, perfectly styled, perfectly structured, everything.

Damn Amiga cooked with the thumbnail and chibi art
I said it once and I’ll say it again, I freaking love your channel and been subscribed ever since I watched your first concord video and your art style I can’t get enough of it, glad I found your channel man keep it up
Great video, man! Fiest video of you that I watch. Was greatly entertained!
A whole hour! We eating good today
Kiriko doesnt have triple headshot damage anymore, its just a regular 2x now
Of course a RWBY (trash) fan likes Overwatch
@@mittag983go to bed junior
@@accidentalmadness1708 I'm old enough to know RWBY, no "junior" knows that trash. I must be at least older Gen Z. Why are your even mad I don't like RWBY? 😂
@ you act like an edgy child that feels the need to attack whatever the people around you like. It’s sad and pretty pathetic.
@@mittag983 While _bloody based_ to dunk on RWBY and its fans, let's give it to'em that outta all the palookas of that series they coulda chosen, they at the very least, had enough remnants of taste leftover to choose _Neo_ as their pfp.
That choice alone commends a _salt grain_ of respect at minimum ya sees.
49:13 I felt like a sleeper agent activating hearing that
Love your longer videos keep up the good work
i really dont remember the comps being much better.... like comp was always a huge annoyance for me until they added roll lock cause the games were just gambling whether your team had an even distribution of people
like especially in quickplay where people didnt really care, i want to still have a chance of winning even though my team doesnt care and having a bad comp puts you so far behind that its just boring
talking specifically about soloqueing quickplay here
RoleQ kill the game
As a Junkrat main, this video makes me smile.
I really really miss the Retribution event and other story modes like it. Also R.I.P. dance emotes T.T
Merry crisis Rowby! I only discovered your content last week, but have been enjoying binging your videos! Enjoy your holiday ^^
W Christmas present from Rowby
49:20 he said the mouthwashing thing
My problem with changing the game to 5v5 is how it completely changes the game and how you may play it with friends. Where once you had 6 friends that could play, unless one of your friends already stopped playing, someone's gonna have to get cut
What a great video. Looks at all angles and isn't a drag.
If OverWatch returns to 6v6 then there was no reason for OverWatch 2 to be made besides to just siphon money from their player base.
Siphon money? It became free to play and there's no pay to win?
thank you for talking about 3V3 😭that hits so close to home
Technically speaking, since your talking about overwatch classic we can call this your first overwatch video Rowby.
all the silent hill 2 references had me screaming with joy
I missed the bloom on Soldier 76 so much when OW 2 dropped. I understand his potential was increased, but the recoil is so annoying. 😢
Not finished yet. Loving the video so far! But one correction i want to make - Sojourn wasn't the second-in-command of Overwatch. Ana was. Sojourn was a captain though.
We NEED more omnics characters, they could do so much to deepen the lore and the factions across Overwatch world
Like we only TRULY have Zennyata and Rammatra
Echo barely looks like one, Orisa feels more like a robot that was MADE, Bastion is cute but barely express himself
Show me another omnics in Rammatra dial that are not only "faceless voiceless evil robots", omnics working with Talon, with Overwatch or that are friends with others heroes/part of their communities and factions
A omnic that DESPISE the junkers and has to hide fellow robots from them
Stop threating them like "just robots" and more like the opresses people who caused a war and are now being radicalized to star ANOTHER
I literally forgot the devs used to do Christmas streams where they would just sit in silence for 6 hours 😂
Another video essay from Rowby, day is saved
The anticipation was high for this one....
I never noticed or thought about this, but Tracer rewind can also be used to reload too.
The being happy and then disappointed cycle you noted at the end is the definition of a toxic relationship lol
Having just finished watching, I think this might be my favorite comprehensive look at Overwatch I've seen. And I've unfortunately seen many.
btw supports felt so bad in new 6v6 because the dps passive is still there even if it literally isn't needed anymore
I love you’re scripts man they always make me laugh 🫵😎👍
I’m a mouth that misses a taste hit me so hard dude 😭 great vid btw :D
Rowby video + snacks = a great evening :)
Stopped playing after the pve missions came out and I completed them all. Man it's so sad to see how it's just kind of stagnated again.
Starting out the video with SeigiVA is appropriate since he participated in so much of the comic dubbing scene when OW first came out.
Hey I loved your Mourning Overwatch video!
Peak Christmas video
Man, I miss Overwatch 1 🦦
14:17 I laughed so hard i dropped my phone onto my face and cried
In Overwatch 5v5 you can feel that one person playing like shit will give you an auto loss while at the same time one person playing out of their mind will still lose you the game.
Christmas came early 🎅🤧
