One of the most common questions on all of my videos, no matter what they are about, is what motorcycle someone should get. Whether they are a beginner, or they are upgrading, or they are just wondering if it's okay that they start on a certain bike. There are a lot of good beginner motorcycles, and I've given my take on the SV650 as a beginner bike, best people still want to know, which should they get?
If I had to give a single suggestion for everyone that asked it, I'd tell them to start on a 250 or similar low powered bike. But this is just my opinion. Whether I think you should start on a certain bike doesn't matter. What bike do YOU want to start on and how much power do YOU think you an handle?
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
My thoughts on the SV650 as a beginner bike: • Is the Suzuki SV650 a ...

I think your advice is good. My take on it is: when in doubt, start small(CBR/Ninja250, ect). If someone has little riding experience, don't start on a bigger bike. Smaller bikes are more likely to forgive any mistakes made. People seem to forget you can always upgrade once you feel the bike is too small and are more confident in your skills. I had some riding experience, and took a course(recommend) before getting my first and current bike, which is an '01 SV650(3rd season with her this year!).

Good points in the vid. I started off on a Ninja 650 then moved to ZX6r. In my opinion, not only will you learn better on a less powerful bike but when you upgrade you will appreciate and respect your more powerful bike so much better.

Great points. I think sometimes people get too caught up in 250/600/1300!!!! discussions when it really is just about the rider. If you take someone who is truly responsible (not just someone who thinks they are), it doesn't matter if their first day is on an R6, they're going to ride within their limits, keep everything under control, etc.

I personally think it just depends on how confident a person is. I started 2 years ago on a 2005 Yamaha R1. I did this because at the time I knew that i wasn't going to be able to buy another bike in many years, so i god a very good deal from a friend that was selling it to me so I just went for it. I love my bike and i'll keep it for many more years to come, so far i have had no problems with it and only dropped it once but i got framesliders. I think it depends on how mature the person is.

I agree. A parallel twin really is a good idea. Fundamentals need to be laid down as a foundation before anything else. However, my first bike was an '81 Honda cb650 standard with wire spokes, not mag wheels. Loved that sohc 4.

    I have a 82 Honda CM250.
This is my first bike and I've had it for a month or so.
I love it, but I do regret starting so small. My bike tops out at about 75MPH, maybe 80 if it feels like it. But with a headwind I'm lucky to keep it over 60.
However. The bike is small and light and very easy to handle.
It doesn't have enough power to get you in trouble.
That is a good thing for a beginner bike.
I will keep this bike through this season but I am already researching my next one.

sv650 is the route to take! i love it, in my experience my friends get too confident on thier 250s after acouple months and have all laid theirs down. The sv keeps me humble because the learning curve is much different than the ninja. just my thoughts

I got a Ninja EX500r for my first bike. I highly recommend it!
It's not to much power for a noob; easily reaches 100+ mph; is very forgiving and agile; can lean very far and can keep up with the 600s in the twisties; gets 50+ mpg; has easy, cheap maintenance; great for light-moderate touring;... The perfect beginner bike in my book! (If you can stand the way they look. lol.)
Kawi stopped making them in 09, but you can find a good used one for $2-3k. I honestly don't ever plan to get rid of mine.

    I am 6 foot 13, 186 CM tall
    238lbs, 108 kilo's.
My first bike was and still is:
    Suzuki GSX 600f 2003 Katana (600cc)
This bike is a blast for me, and i don't need anything more.
It's pretty big just like me :), if you're a little bigger, than a GSX 600F > 98' is perfect for you!

You should organize a "motonosity ride" in Austin lol im sure you have quite a few subscribers in the area. I heard there are some nice hill areas a little west of Austin.

    3:00 "a generic person" hehe.
I just did my IBT(MSF) course.I was planning to get a cbr600f4i but over here we have to complete the course before we get on the road. After riding a sv650s I know better than to start off on a 600cc sports bike.
I still want my f4i and I'll probably get it in a few months but for now i've seen there's so much benefit to starting on a sv650s or similar bike.Clutch and throttle control can be learned much easier on a 650 and still have loads of power when you need it

My first bike is a 1996 GSX600F. Almost got a ZX7R, but was too scared to even try to test ride it. However, now i'm really considering the 2013 300. Just my two cents.

I started on the sv650 and it is better than a 250 imo purely for the purpose of commuting long distances on the highway. I actually did a round trip from TAMU to Austin yesterday (Salt Lick BBQ ftw). I can't imagine riding a ninja 250 300+ miles especially with the crosswind yesterday.

  • @GoSutto

Another thing to keep in mind is that it's a lot more fun to ride a "slow" bike fast than it is to ride a fast bike slow.

And I have also noticed people who started on smaller bikes recommend starting on a smaller but those who start on 600's recommend starting on them. It also has to do with your self control too and a 600 in the low rpm's is pretty sluggish too.

  • @roydied15
    @roydied15 11 років тому

haha when i started riding, my dad always told me "if you wouldn't ever (at least for the first year) feel safe giving the bike complete full throttle, it isn't a safe beginner bike." I started on a 75 Yamaha DT250, moved to a 2001 Buell Blast, and now i'm rocking a 2003 Buell XB9S. I feel its a little on the slow side after riding for nearly 4 years now, but it has so much personality, it gets great gas mileage, and has dirt cheap insurance. I don't know if i'll ever let it go :)

I have to admit, i was scared to go to second gear my first day riding my 650. Second day i went to second gear. Then as i was going down the road being passed by cars i went on to the next gears. The cars are not forgiving to a new rider. Best to go to a place you can practice changing gears with your clutch. I fell over trying to turn around. It was a 1985 Kawasaki 650. I had a blast on it after i learned to ride better. Till it caught on fire. The wiring burned for who knows what reason.

I feel like a person should know their limit and how responsible they are as far as it comes to what size they need. I started off on a 600... And personally I love it, As long as a person is responsible, I think they should test drive their limit... But that's my 2 cents, great video btw

First bike was an 04 Suzuki Can-o-Tuna (Katana), which I did the BRC on. Within 6 months I replaced it with a Ninja1000, which I did the MSRC on. I'd say it's up to the person which bike is best to start on. Immature individuals that know they'd push the limit before they are ready... blah blah blah. Basically, I believe it is based on maturity level and control, and what you do after you drop your first bike! Great video, I'm tuned in!

I started out on a cbr600, however I would not advise it to others. I grew up on fourwheelers, dirt bikes, and super motos. So I already had a very good foundation. Most people don't have that. Even with my foundation, I still had a few situations where I was a little terrified. I hear about a lot of people starting out on 600s and I think it's stupid. Because I hear things like "Oh well I'm tall I need bigger" & I roll my eyes because I know they have zero experience with clutches & throttles.

Actually a quick question... I'm sure you're loving the R6, but how do you find it comfort-wise. I realise they're not built for all that, but do you feel like you could put in some decent hours on that bike?

hey motonosity...modding sport bikes is pretty common. My question to you is not whats the best bike because I have decided to start with the new Ninja 300 and work my way up to a r6 or ducati 848...now with the 300 you have to keep shifting... i thought there was a mod for changing the gear ratio...so you dont always have to keep shifting from 1 2 3 4 5 rapidly

depends on the person too . out here we need a license to ride a bike above 125. we have to follow 8hours of lessons that are been givin with a 600cc naked bike. so out here everyone will say that a 600cc is a good starter bike (naked bike) . but you when you don't have to do this school i would recommend a 250cc too . after the 8hours i started with my r6 (my first bike)

I'm 6" foot, 137 pounds, slender figure. Never had ridden a motorcycle before, took the MSF course, passed it, all good. Thought about it for a couple of days and decided to get a 600cc. I ended up buying a 2006 ZX6R 636 for $3600.(I know right, what a good deal)
And I wouldn't have it any other way. I love this thing, I say it all depends of the kind of rider you want to be. The idiot who wants to go really fast or the person who is genuinely interested in riding and becoming a great rider.

each person is different. Buy an old bike first, then get one that cost more later. You will damage your first bike some time, money will matter. I started on a 650cc. It was too big for me. But thats what i learned on, and it was an older bike.

  • @0foxgiven
    @0foxgiven 11 років тому

I started on a 600 supersport...it is way too much power for a beginner, so if you are after the speed, you're gonna get in trouble
But, and this is the important part; if you're the kind of person who can control themselves, BY ALL MEANS, GET A 600...even a liter bike, maybe even a busa!
you don't have to use all the power all the time, keep it below 5k and you have less power than the ninja 250!
    it's all dependent on the person's size and mentality...6'5" , 220lbs, and calm? zx14!

Why isn't anyone considering buying a 500cc as a first bike? You have the big bike feel, it's already heavy, fuel consumption-power ratio is generally good... If you buy an old Honda cb500 you'll get a kinda cheap, kinda cheap to run big bike that has the same re-sell value since you're only gonna use it until you learn enough not to low-side your expensive 600 (if you really want that so much) at the first corner... 500cc should be considered imo. Those are favored learner bikes for a reason.

For first time riders, you simply have no idea how addictive and empowering that 600 throttle is. When adrenaline kicks in, your brain stops working. If you think you're buying a 160+ mph beast to do the speed limit, you're fooling yourself. Big bikes make you stupid. Hopefully it will be temporary and you'll be lucky. :-)
