It is HEX 14 for FILLER PLUG. I bought Hex 22 bit socket after watching this video and sadly it turned out to be not the right part. Paulroman a year ago, pointed out Hex22 is too big and after my experience, I can say with some confidence that the right bit size for BMW F10 is Hex14. I have returned the bit easily on Amazon. I hope that you would amend your video accordingly so that future DIYer are not affected.
Excellent video. In another video the guy use Castrol Syntrax 75W-140. Here in your video you are using Castrol Syntrax 75W-90. Which is best? I have a BMW 525D Xdrive 2012 I must change the differential oil.
I usually go by what is recommend in the BMW service manual. And I believe that at the time of doing that work, the oil used in the video was the one recommend.
I read that the heavier 75W-140 is necessary for limited slip differentials, which generate more heat and are installed in M variants. I believe my 750iX calls for 75W-90, but I do plenty of highway driving (1 hour each way for work) and beat the brakes off the car most days so I'm going with 75W-140. More info: there is an aspect of these oil weights related to "axle efficiency." The spread on efficiency is (relatively) quite a bit wider at lower speeds than at high speeds. For my case usage mentioned above, this efficiency gap narrows significantly at 60 mph, which is where most of my driving would be. With the added oil film strength and longevity of the 75W-140, it appears to be a no-brainer.
Good afternoon; I had an E46 and I did the maintenance to the gearbox and differential without problem. However now I have a F11, and I want to do the differential do you know if the screws/plugs can be reused? I have read on some sites that you have to change the screw or o-ring.
Yes you can reuse it. The first time I done my diff oil I went all by the book and bought a new one, since them I have done a few oil changes for clients that did not want to buy the plug without a problem. also done a second oil change on my car after 40K and reused the plug.
Hi is there any front differential to put differential oil? i am having 520d not x drive model. i am about to change the diff oil and do i only need to change the rear diff oil then ? not the front ?
This is something that happened after production date 7/2011. BMW switched diff oils from 7/2011 without any changes to the differential itself. I went with 75W90 as my car is 04/2010.
reason - prolong the life of the diff . many manufacturers don't want you to keep a car forever, and as long as it is fulfilling the 100.000 miles 5-6 year cycle that is not their concern any more.
@@BestCarMods just a couple of data points. I have two BMWs, X5 and 528, over 10 years old, 150k miles, no problems. Battery lasted 10 years, serpentine belt lasted 140k miles before snapping. Never changed transmission oils, although transmission started acting rough so I will change the fluid soon. Oil always changed after computer tells me to. So far the engine still going smooth as silk. There are some problems, oil leak etc. But I never though about diff oil change. Never heard of it. Not that I don't recommend it, I am just lazy.

Nice video !
Hi my is 535 xdrive 2013 f10 is the same process,
Hows the Castrol oil? I have two cans standing ready and going to do a oil change soon.
This oil service is something that you will not really feel or see any difference. You just make sure that the oil is new.
BMW saying GL4 75w85, no problem with the 75w90 GL5 ?

@@xsavier7984 as long as you don't have another source stating something completely different, I would still use it.
Would you please to tell me how many liters of diff. Oil are needed?
less than 1l ... and I think that you have more details about that in the video.
How much did yours take?
less than 1l
Huh? Not designed to be serviced. But you are changing the oil anyways? Would have been good if you state the reason for this service.
