- Penelope Cruz, my new Japanese girlfriend, gets an OBX axle-back exhaust upgrade. This is an in-depth installation video, complete with scientifically measured sound level measurements with a digital sound level meter.
When I get up to 40-50 mph, the wind noise prevents me from being able to HEAR when to shift! Causing me to take my eyes off the road on fast long sweeping turns - which is dangerous! Looking down at the tachometer when going through curves is a good way of getting yourself killed!
So we are installing a much louder exhaust on Penelope for.... SAFETY! Yeah... yeah... that's my excuse! :)
This was purchased on eBay from Racing Parts Warehouse and it is an axle-back exhaust from OBX Racing Sports. Although there were some BAD reviews out there or OBX's header and mid-pipes, I couldn't' find anything bad about this muffler unit - the only thing bad people had to say was "It's LOUD!" That's OK, I am going for LOUD! I'm half deaf anyway....

So I have just replaced my back box too. This was really useful. For a start I bought new nuts n bolts ahead. Swell guy 😊
This guy's a gem. Awesome video.
Hi again, I posted a comment 5 months ago mentioning that the website you bought your exhaust from no longer carried the OBX axel back system. I recently found it listed in eBay and after delivery on Memorial Day Weekend, I installed the unit on my NC.
I just drove my car normally for the week to let it sort of break in. Every Saturday morning I drive up and down my local mountain road. Today was no different, this is roughly 30 miles of manual shifting with average engine speeds of 4K. It appears that the muffler gets louder over time. What you hear on a cold start after the initial install is different in a week. I heard from others that it gets louder after a few months.
Since you installed this axel back a long time ago, have you experienced this change? When you finally do get your headers and mid pipe I can imagine how much louder it’s going to be.
I think for me it’s loud enough. BTW, this Miata is a dude magnet. I’ve had do many young guys talking to me about the Miata and my mods. When my wife drives it she really gets a lot of attention.
Grinder with a cutting blade or a Reciprocating Saw Tool will make things a lot easier !!!
We love Penelope, and your videos! Subscribed
Loving the videos! Keep it up! I think Penelope needs some boost!
Enjoyed your video! Greetings from Vancouver Canada.
Thanks!
Great tutorial ,your my kind of mechanic .i have the same car just in red .I was wondering if you could give me the exact part # and brand of gasket to marry up the new exhaust ,Thanks
thanks for sharing!!
It sounds great man!, I’m also installing the same axleback right now and was wondering what specs those screws that you bought were
Nice job the OBX sounds good.
I put Goodwin racing on my NC zoom zoom.👍
Nice 👍
Well I ordered it is coming in this Thursday 6-23-22
how does it sound. to load or just right i just bought a a mx5 Miata grand touring and its to quite.
Do you still have the OEM Catted headers? or have you changed the headers as well? I have catless headers and im worried this may be too loud when combined with catless headers.
Everything else is BONE STOCK and I haven't changed anything in that regard. The HP gains are minimal at best...
@possumfarms thanks for the reply!
I ended up getting this same exhaust, paired with a Goodwin racing 1.8" max power catless header and the Stock midpipe. The drone at 2400-3000 RPM is bad especially on decel, but butt dyno feels like I picked up another 3-5 HP up top in RPMs compared to stock muffler with the header and tune already installed 👍
It's a smidgen too loud for my taste but it was cheap, I'll probably get the Cobalt Muffler in the future to quiet it down some more
It sounds great!! What is the part number you used for the OBX exhaust?
I bought it on eBay from "Racingpartsdepot" listed as "OBX Axleback Exhaust for 2006-2013 Mazda Miata NC MX5" for $441.99. Racingpartsdepot is no longer a valid eBay user and the item is no longer listed from them, so I don't have a part number, sorry.
Thanks for your response.
I can't find the OBX like yours anywhere and OBX won't answer the phone or reply to an email, so they must be out of business. I like the way yours looks & sounds. I found another brand called Piper Exhaust but it's in the UK, it has no silencers, so I reckon I'll have to order that one.
Hey bro there is another version of this exhaust by OBX online
Unfortunately, it appears that this item is not listed in their website.
One thing I hate about eBay components, they change! What was available last year is POOF gone.... :(
Sounds great . I had to put a damper in mine. Its just too damn loud.
I've been watching a ton of videos trying 2 find an exhaust that gives the car some sound they all don't seem to amount to much I was getting ready 2 search this set up and purchase but u say 2 loud?I don't want to be stuck with a dronee loud exhaust put flow master on an 83 mustang I had and hated it such a drone 2 it right at cruising speed
What if I want to go the opposite route? Is it possible to make the NC sound like a Mazda 3 or similar models? I'm not concerned about any drop in horsepower. Just like quiet sounding engines.
Then I would go and make friends with your local muffler shop. Preferably one that has been around a good long while with an old coot as the owner. And express your concerns. The old guy has probably seen it all... And has a few tricks up his sleeve. Thanks for your comments!

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated
Sounds great. But mine is a daily driver .
Hello, which size where the bolts?
I found some that "fit" the holes... Sorry I can't be more help there...
@@possumfarms No problem, man. I got it figured at my local hardware store. Some regular bolts did the job!
use the double nut technique to get the studs out
They were welded in - I wasn't going to tear it up in case I wanted to put the stock one back in!
Why not cut the old muffler hanger off?
because I didn't need to!
Is there a link you can provide for me to purchase this same one? Pl ty
Do a search on eBay
Where do you buy these? I can’t find it anywhere
eBay!
Next time you replace a muffler, spray the hangers with Dawn liquid dishwashing soap for lubrication and use a pair of Lisle exhaust hanger pliers (Lisle #38350). You’ll save yourself a lot of frustration and can remove those hangers in a matter of seconds!
True I removed my NC muffler and dish soap works lol.
Soap and water on the hangers will save you every time.
