The last Oscars I watched was in 1999. When Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture I resolved to never watch again. And I've stuck to that. Think of the hundreds of hours I've saved, and the number of self-aggrandizing virtue signaling speeches I've missed. I should actually be thankful for that snub.
I saw Paths of Glory on TV. The movie set up the attack... went to commercial ... and the next scene is Kirk Douglas asking his men why they weren't moving forward. Until I saw it much later, I didn't realize there was a battle scene! Maybe there's something about genuine war movies that Oscar doesn't like. Did The Big Red One win any?
Despite a classic opening, & some powerfully directed moments, there were some manipulative plot aspects of "Saving Private Ryan" that have become more obvious as the years have gone by, but didn't escape the academy. So this said, while Spielberg deserved his Directing Oscar IMO it didn't deserve Best Picture, and winner "Shakespeare in Love" even less so!
Totally agree but just as in Politics...ya win sum and ya lose sum. Stuff happens.. It's all got to do with whose in and whose out.. Think Apocalypto by Mel Gibson.
Not war films but for me 3 snubs: Fargo deserved best picture, Macy best actor for Fargo and Incendies deserved best foreign language film for their year. And yes Kramer vs Kramer is not very good IMO
You either like and appreciate film or you take the Academy awards seriously. I’ve never understood how people don’t see those awards for what they really are.
Sorry but "Saving Private Ryan" was nothing but a huge cliche from after the Omaha Beach segment. Spielberg can make good movies when he learns to back off the message but unfortunately that is rare. "Come and See" is a brilliant but horrific. I doubt the judges had the intestinal fortitude to watch it.
Agreed. I found it after the beach landing to be more of a kid’s view of how to make war movie when you have millions of dollars to play with. Eastwood’s Iwo Jima movie was better.

The reason for Hanks' loss in Saving Private Ryan is simple--they adamantly refused to give him a 3rd statute in a row.
Blackhawk Down may be the best war movie of the century so far.
If I saw "Paths of Glory" on network TV in the 60's, it wasn't banned very well.

The academy apparently does things by their own rules...follow the money or other dirt!???

There Kings is a crappy remake of Kelly’s Heroes
Agree, it’s an awful film. Clooney is not a leading man, he’s an average jobbing actor.

@@hombre1965 Agreed
Jarhead? Give me a break...
The Oscars stopped being relevant a while back .....
Jarhead was an absolute "POS" movie. One of the worst war movies ever made.
