Saving private Ryan not being the top of this list is a travesty it just proves that these so called critics are completely useless and should be totally ignored 💯💯💯💯
Twelve O'Clock High with Gregory Peck is still one of my favorite films. There are several other outstanding war movies not mentioned in the video since they didn't win an Oscar but, have withstood the test of time as outstanding works.
These would/should have been included in a list of great war movies, The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, The Battle Of Britain, Das Boot, Apocalypse Now, Downfall, A Bridge Too Far and my vote for the greatest movie of all time Paths Of Glory.
I agree but the list is of war films that won the Best Picture Oscar. These were great films but did not win that award. Saving Private Ryan should have. The Longest Day lost to Lawrence of Arabia another war film. Having seen both I think Lawrence is the better film..
Harold Russell in the “The Best Years of Our Lives” wasn’t an actor, but a real US Navy sailor. He was employed bc of his prosthesis. Yet he outshined the other actors!
Russell hadn’t been an actor, but he deserves the title of actor because of his exceptional performance. I didn’t see Best Years until about 15 years ago. I was blown away. I never imagined that anyone would have had the courage to make such a gripping film.
I was a Vietnam veteran recently home when The Deer Hunter came out. I still detest the movie because of its fakeness and falseness about the war. The plot was idiotic. It even insulted the Viet Cong enemy. The only thing genuine about The Deer Hunter was the grief the damn war caused us and our loved ones. I hate that movie. If you want to know what the war was like, there are several that show it properly. Platoon was one of them.
I am 77, so i don't expect many to remember this one. I know it so well from being broadcast on television in Los Angeles in the 1950s. Anyway, check out "A Walk In The Sun". Outstanding......
@@chriswilliams5982so if any of us haven’t served and experienced frontline combat then we can’t comment on war films?!!! Damn, I have never visited another planet so I can never comment on a sci-fi movie. Are you truly that moronic?! Really?
"All quiet in the Western Front" based in the Book "Im Westen nichts Neues" wrote by Erich Maria Remarque, who was a german WW1 Veteran, and the book based in his war experience... And he is not from Finnland!!! ... I hate these AI made Films...🙄🙄🤦🏻♂️
Apparently Noel Coward visited the set of 'Lawrence of Arabia'when they were filming in Morocco. On seeing Peter October in full dress as 'El Aurens', he murmured to him: Dear Boy! If they'd made you any prettier, they'd have had to have called it "Florence of Arabia!"
Lawrence of Arabia is probably…no, certainly, my favorite motion picture. I was too young to see it when it came out… saw it first in the early 70’s. It is not history…it’s better than history. It’s what history should have been. History should have such a fine sound track. Actors, script, locations, direction….all top notch. It even has a tiny armored car of the type that actually fought in the campaign! The motorcycle elements are just glorious. I owe my motorcycle past to those shots. Once a year I dig out the LoA DVD from the safe, optimize the speaker locations and open the best wine I can afford. Guests are chosen carefully.
The most recent films are good but not exceptional movies. Braveheart, The Hurt Locker, Platoon, The English Patient, can’t hold a candle to, say, David Lean’s two masterpieces.
"Life Is Beautiful"...one of the best "wartime" films I have ever seen. ..the movie stirred up venomous opposition from the right wing in Italy [and at] Cannes, it offended some left-wing critics with its use of humour in connection with the Holocaust. What may be most offensive to both wings is its sidestepping of politics in favour of simple human ingenuity. My second would be "Das Boot".... "Rotten Tomatoes" says..Today, the film is seen as one of the greatest German films. The the film received an approval rating of 98% based on 55 reviews, with an average rating of 9.10/10. The critical consensus states "Taut, breathtakingly thrilling, and devastatingly intelligent, Das Boot is one of the greatest war films ever made. (I'm surprised "Hacksaw Ridge" wasn't mentioned).
"1917" and "Apocalypse Now" certainly should be on that list. And of course the only foreign-language film nominated for Best Picture in the first 40 years of Oscars, "Grand Illusion", perhaps the greatest film of all time (Orson Welles said if he could only save two films, they would be "Grand Illusion" and something else!).
I remember Wellman recounting his experience making Wings. During the staging of a battle scene, the visit of a studio exec distracted him when he was supposed to be triggering explosives. He was horrified to see two bodies fly through the air, and yelled at the exec to get the hell out of there.
Two films that showed realism of war were The Cruel Sea and Dunkirk ( the earlier one of course) What they lacked in special effects was made up for by a total lack of patriotic bullshit. The Cruel Sea showed that war is just a long hard slogging match of attrition.
Greer Garson won Best Actress for Mrs. Minniver. I was just at the land she and her husband donated near Santa Fe where the Battle of Glorietta Pass was fought during the Civil War.
I began watching The Deer Hunter when it came to TV. But when it showed snow-capped mountains and claimed it was the Appalachians in the Pittsburgh area, I turned off.
Absolutely agree--it was more comedy than realistic. The liberties that hot mess took with actual tactics were too ludicrous to believe. No wonder the cretins in the Academy gave it an Oscar.
If you read T E Lawrences “Seven Pillars of Wisdom”, a partial autobiography you will read of the motivation to the “no prisoners” scene. If hamas was responsible for anything like it October 7 then I am not surprised at the IDF approach to the elimination of hamas, there should be no place on this earth for such mentality as exhibited by hamas.
The British that survived building the bridge over the River Kwai did not like the film. They said the way Col Nickolson was portrayed in the film slandered him. This raises the question of how far can a movie production's "artistic licence" go to portray a historical figure. Schindler's List is a crock.
The English Patient is an intense drama using love and loss to propel the plot. Shakespeare in Love is utter garbage - fluff with no substance - and stands as the ultimate example of how unrealistic the Oscars are.
You failed to mention the names of the movies “Wings,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Best Years of Our Lives,” “From Here to Eternity,” “Deer Hunter” and “Braveheart” when describing them. I wonder how people with visual impairments would enjoy this video. My guess is that they would find it extremely frustrating.
12:00 the only reason RALPH FINES did not win best supporting actor is because HOLLYWOOD is a GOOD OLE BOY’S CLUB. Who was the actor who won it for the Furturtive?
Why did,not Midway and Pearl Harbor make this list ? Both Midway movies had all star cast in them and Pearl Harbor had Ben Aflack Josh Hartnet in it. Not to mention the Battle scenes in both movies were. assome.⚡⚡⚡👹👹💥
I wouldn't consider many of these films to be "war" films. Set during a war, sure. Having war as the background. But definitely not "war films" as most people understand the term.
You can make the case that O’Toole deserved the Oscar, but to call Gregory Peck’s performance in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “mediocre” is just plain clueless. It’s almost like comparing apples to oranges. O’Toole played a grand, larger-than-life, chaotic character in an epic extravaganza of a film. Perhaps the greatest extravaganza of all time. Gregory Peck played quite the opposite, portraying a quiet, steady, principled, steely man in a modest, low-keyed drama. They’re completely opposite, both exceptional films with exceptional performances. Just because O’Toole was able to play with lots of flash doesn’t mean his performance was better. Peck’s quiet gravitas is just as impressive.
I have seen all but three of these films (All Quiet... {though I have seen the remakes and read the book} the English Patient, and the Hurt Locker) Most of these films were outstanding (deer-hunter? platoon? eh!). I was surprised you did NOT mention that US Army WW2 Veteran Harold Russell was ACTUALLY a double-amputee as some who did NOT see the film would assume it was special effects. That to me is more interesting than what the incestous hollywood insiders think. Shame that movies like Battleground, Battle of Britain, We Were Soldiers, Das Boote, and The Longest Day didn't make the list
Saving Private Ryan Got Robbed Point Blank Period...It is the greatest War Film On Camera Visually mostly...You don't need a story when men killing each other by the thousands....

That's among my favorites
The thing about 1950 war movies is that so many of the extras and some of the cast were combat vets.
It’s a disgrace that “saving private Ryan” isn’t on the list.
It did lose out to Titanic.
@ no it lost to Shakespeare in love. A freaking comedy.
BS Plot Line. Better movies: Battleground, Battle of Britain, We Were Soldiers, Das Boote, and The Longest Day

Some good movies here but I have to say the first time I saw All Quiet on the Western Front it got me thinking about war in a different light.
The ending was too Hollywood. The cavalry riding to the rescue in the nick of time.
