  • What is off-road skating and what are SUV skates?
    Sometimes called Off-road inline skating or all-terrain skating, this style of rollerblading allows the skater to step away from the traditional skating environment and hit more challenging terrains like dirt trails, gravel paths, mountain bike tracks, BMX dirt jumps, grassy fields, and even rocky or sandy places.

    A tip for everyone trying it: the surface matters as much as the material, sandy and moody will not work good. And you need the 7bar / 100psi pressure in the wheels or you'll feel like rolling on glue. Most pumps don't work as too much air escapes when putting the valve off.

    I still love the story of Joseph Merlin, who in 1760 decided to make an entrance into a masquerade ball by using early inline skates to skate into the event playing a violin. Unfortunately, his steel wheels combined with a marble floor gave little to no grip, facilitating him to skate straight into a plate glass mirror wall, thus brining inline skates to the attention of the general public...
    Basically, he kinda pulled a reverse Steven Bradbury lol

    I owned a set of the Rollerblade Coyotes in the early 00's and used them to terrorise the streets of Quebec City! Ripping around the grassy hills of the Plaine's D'Abraham and bombing down the city streets from uptown to downtown, skitching behind vehicles when I got to the flats. I remember them being HEAVY and long, requiring more of a speed skating stride than a hockey skate. Crazy memories! I can only imagine how much better they've become 20 years later!

    I just ordered my first skiboards. Weird intro, I know, but my research into skiboarding segwayed into inline skating, and as stoked as I am for ski season starting (tomorrow morning, for me) I'm also excited for the end of ski season so I can get into inline skating. Bingeing your videos has been inspirational. I'm gonna start with a endless 90 type frame, then when I get my legs ill look into either aggressive frames (depending on how ski park sessions go) or ill go into offroad, which I know ill love haha

      I’m 68 and live on a sailboat. We’re looking for a way to get to town when we are anchored offshore in the Caribbean. The battery blew out on our folding ebike. These would be way more portable. Is it hard to learn? I don’t be doing any back flips 😂 just want to get into town for groceries and explore local terrain. Walking can be a drag. I would get full pads and a helmet. Could o use my walking poles for balance?

    I love your channel! I’m a roller skater that’s recently been getting into roller blading and I’m loving your content! I also think it’s cool you reply to everyone. (But don’t feel like you need to reply to this comment I’m just rambling lol) I will say this, you replied to a comment I left the other day about the popularity of rollerblading. While no, I don’t think it’ll ever become as big as skateboarding I do believe it’s getting more popular. And tbh, I don’t know if I want to see roller blading and roller skating becoming as popular as skateboarding. Right now I feel like the rollerblading community is really chill and not toxic in the least bit and I can’t say the same for skateboarders or even roller skaters. I like how chill the rollerblading community is. No one’s calling you a poser or trying to ban you from the skate park because they don’t like what you’re on. And there’s no controversy surrounding womens sports like their is in the roller skating community with roller derby. I just prefer how chill it is right now. I love roller skating but honestly the SUV skates have been some of the most fun I’ve had on skates in years! I had the privilege of being able to borrow a friends last summer and it was an unforgettable experience using them. It makes me wish that off road quads existed. I doubt they’d be as fast but I’m still curious if it’s possible?

    • @TomMoyse
      @TomMoyse  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words. I agree i don't think it will become as popular at skateboarding, it the next 10 years but who knows. There was a burst of growth but that has calmed down and i think there is a different attitude towards all "extreme sports" these day, but nothing drastic for rollerblading. i'm glad your experience of the community is that way, it's positively tight-nit and excepting, but not completely free poor attitudes. i reckon off road quads might be doable, id be concerned about balance though.

    Hey Tom
    I’m getting my first off road wheels because the pavements around South Wales are nigh impossible even on 3 x 110’s.
    I’ll be able to knock up some serious mileage in places I’ve found difficult to say the least. I’m new to roller blading with a year under my belt and at 68 I’ve got some catching up to do, but what the hell, I’m going to give it a whirl on the big boys 😊.
    Mike

    Don't even try this until the drought of summer. Any grass height and any sogginess brings you to a crawl. You can punch through a little more terrain with "Classic" version (one way ratchet on wheel). But when it's good, this is as good as skiing.

    I have the 200 mm powerslide kit, and use it on a regular basis. It's not as smooth off-road as the promotional videos suggest. I use them for bad/cracked pavement, but with gravel or rocks or roots -- forget about it. You can sort of make it through, but it's not fun. Packed dirt is great, but one needs to look out for sudden branches and rocks not to faceplant. It's not like mountain biking for skating, one needs even bigger wheels. Also note that most videos are taken skating downhill.

    if he gets a flat, he can take a small pump and puncher repair kit. I did some offroad skateboarding. using Evolve All Terrain Electric Skateboard. They can go about 21mph on a flat, they have enough power to take you up steap hills, although big hills drain your battery quite quick. I can skate about 12k distance on one charge, which I think is about 45 minutes of skating. The newer expensive boards can go double that distance

I also did the aggressive skating thing as well as skateboarded… I sucked at them all but I enjoyed it all. I had a lower spine injury (s) and can’t walk without it causing pain. I would have loved to try off-road skating and boarding! I moved to an area at 17 that I couldn’t skate of any kind. It was gravel, hills and crappy roads. I tried to use my deck in the winter and down some dirt hill paths with very little success. If I had these or off-road skateboards I would have been in heaven.
