  • Teaching the dog to come - The dog must quickly come to the trainer at his command or hand signal during lessons, at work, and in any situation no matter how complicated. This skill disciplines the dog and makes him pay attention to the trainer. Conditioned stimuli - the "Come" command and hand signal: left arm held out to the side at shoulder level with palm towards the dog, lower arms to hip. Unconditional stimuli - treat, petting, sometimes pulling with the leash. The skill is developed based on the food behavioral reaction. The skill is introduced beginning with the first walks with the dog. The primary training method: food reward - based method.
Methodology and training procedure. After the trainer learns the procedure without the dog, lessons are conducted in an area with the fewest number of distracting stimuli. The dog must be hungry and well exercised. The exercise is carried out like this: While walking the dog, the trainer calls the dog's name. He attracts the dog's attention by showing a piece of meat and gives the "Come" command. The treat is secured on the palm of the hand by the big finger, At first, movement of the arm is optional, and then the arm is extended and held at shoulder level. Gradually, the raised arm becomes a signal for the dog that a treat is being offered. If the dog approaches sluggishly and slowly, the trainer should run backwards away from the dog. The exercise should be repeated 10-15 times during one two-hour session with mandatory use of treats as rewards. if the dog does not react to the "Come" command and the display of a treat, the trainer distracts the dog with his behavior and pulls the dog towards him with light pressure of the leash, pets it, and gives it a treat. When the dog quickly runs up to the trainer from the end of the long leash following the "Come" command and hand signal, the following complicating variations are introduced. A. controlling the dog by the command or hand signal used along; B. development of the conditioned reflex to sit in front of the trainer after the approach; C. gradual increase of the time the dog must sit in front of the trainer after its approach; D. calling the dog from any position, teaching it to sit beside the left leg after staying position in front of the trainer; E. teaching reliability even in the presence of distracting stimuli; F. controlling the dog without the leash; G calling the dog when the trainer is in different positions: standing, sitting, lying down, in motion, from behind cover, etc.; H. perfecting the skill in complex environmental conditions along with other basic obedience and specialized skills. The skill is considered fully developed if the dog quickly approaches and sits in front of the trainer on command or hand signal from a distance of 30 meters in a complex environment.
Potential trainer errors and their consequences: Excessive repetition of the dogs name before the "Come" command; excessive repetition of the command. 2. Use of noxious, unpleasant stimuli on the dog after it approaches the trainer. 3. Calling the dog repeatedly to come from the sitting, lying, and standing positions. This makes it difficult to develop self-control and restrain in those positions.
