A friend of mine bought a very mint 1965 sedan back in ‘98. It was a very clean car but he lost it in a horrific fire on the Van Wyck Expressway in Queens a few months later. Always clap down the fuel lines and leave the plastic filter out.
Good video man
Thank you!!
After being in my friends super beetle going down the road on fire there’s a few things I learned. First push the clutch in and turn the car off if it’s still running. You want to do this to stop the mechanical fuel from pumping fuel. Next is have a fire extinguisher, which we did not. Luckily we had bottled water on board and was able to put the fire out. The cause of the fire was no clamp on the fuel line and the fuel line came off and sprayed fuel all over the alternator. For those that believe you don’t need a clamp on braided fuel line, you do. Luckily we were able to put the fuel line back on and drive to the parts store to fix the melted wiring.
Man, i gotta say I love these videos, and your knowledge is straight golden in the vw community . I'm so glad it won't be gone like so many other vw mechanics knowledge
Thank you!!!
I made a mounting bracket that holds my filter over the axle boot just like that.So much safer.
My fuel hose came off today. I went with the wire secure method but this was a great tip!
Oh my!! Please be careful!!
Yep hit the nail on the head. Love it! I actually went out and checked my carb after watching this and it is threaded. I had never thought of that before.
Enter the hole with drill bit spinning slowly so it wont cut too fast and wander. Only problem with drill press is setting up square and holding it sqaure if you set it up off the drill press will drill off square. Buy a not so cheap drill press. Thanks for the informative video.
Good video
Lots of good advice. Can’t wait for the painting videos
Thanks Slade for the Fire Prevention Video ----- I noticed that on the Pipe Tap ------- You should test fit the Fitting as you get in a ways ---- I was afraid as I was watching ----you were going TOO DEEP and the fitting would seat on the shoulder --- next to the hex and you would not be able to tighten the fitting down ---- The Pipe Tap is tapered and will seal --- you don't have to get right next to the shoulder ---- anywhere after three-quarters in will do ------ with that you will be able to tighten down the fitting --- WITHOUT hitting the shoulder first --- clean and blow out and test fit the fitting ---- so you don't ruin the part ------ Thank You Again for the Video --- Rodney -------- Being tapered ------ the more you go in ---- the more you remove from the wall thickness -- which will be thin
I was thinking the same thing. The Flange should never bottom out. If it does the threads won't seal. This is the point of having the tapered thread.
Lol ya got got me with see why this is no good anymore. Been there done that lol
I thank you....from South Africa 🇿🇦
The fuel filter is a day two modification. When they were new beetles didn’t have them. There’s a small screen in the tank and older fuel pumps had a cleanable screen in the pump. Even today if you look at a VW from Europe they don’t run fuel filters. I don’t know if fuel in the US was full of crud or what but a lot of domestic cars from back in the day had fuel filters between the pump and carb and somehow overtime they found their way into VWs.
Awesome video Slade thanks see ya on the next one.
Thanks for the very informative video, Slade!!!!
Excellent video really like the topic. I have a couple to add that I am thinking of doing on mine is putting the fuel filter under the back seat and adding a inline fuel shut off in front of the filter
love this, slades thank you
Great advice Mr Slade !
Another great video and well worth the preventative measure. I purchased the transaxle fuel filter bracket and it was very easy to install. Keep these videos coming!
Great tips! Thanks for sharing. Btw, I have a spare benchtop drill press I am not using that you are welcome to. I am in the South Hills of 412.
Just DM me if you are interested and perhaps we can meet up to get it to you.
Thank you for another great video
Great prevention tips - but how about if there is a fire: how do you put it out? Do I need to open the decklid? If so, how do I do so without burning myself?
Biggest problem we have had for engine fires is 1. OLD HOSE... 2. NO CLAMPS.....3 BARB CAME OUT OF CARB......4 CARB LEAK OR FLOODED OVER...5. GLASS FUEL FILTER came apart (NEVER RUN ONE). Everything else is a myth. I have seen some electrical fires but those are few and far between and never caused an actual fire just a mess of wire. Believe me I worked at a shop and even the neighboring shops have seen about 30,000 vws over that period of time. these were the ONLY engine compartment issues.
other than fuel injected which is another whole list of stuff.
Excellent.
The electric fuel pump safety device is called an inertia switch. They're very simple and will save your life.
Any internet parts place and probably brick and mortar store can sell you one for less than 50 bucks.
Don't burn your bacon.
Great video.
great video! thank you
In over 35 years of working on VW's I have never experienced a plastic fuel filter breaking and causing a fire, despite being in the engine compartment. I have seen many fittings pop out and metal fuel lines run through the front tin not being secured or grommeted causing wear to the line (both rubber and metal) causing a leak and fire. I personally don't run them in the engine compartment, but I would someday like to see actual proof that one of these plastic filters actually broke and caused a fire in an ACVW of any kind. Not saying it has never happened, but I think the myth is much larger than the actual fact this is a "thing".
“And you can see why this is no good anymore” 😂😂😂😂
I just had a fire a week ago😢
I had looked at the hoses and filter for signs of wear, seeing none I went for a ride. Got a block away and the car quit. Looked in the rear view to see heat waves. We grabbed the fire extinguisher and put out a small flame (I think I caused more than necessary because I flipped the deck lid open instead of only opening a couple of inches) anyway not much damage
I’m sorry to hear that. Luckily it wasn’t worse. The clean up is not fun.
nice job.
What about converting to A/N fittings? Getting rid of rubber lines altogether sounds like the best plan.
That hold on the generator top and bottom where black rubber is make shore it's on
Great video. Where the link for the carb fitting?
Should be able to get it at any parts house
Hope you’re doing well Vintage!

Wouldnt you be able to just stick an empi carb top half on a solex body so you can get that fitting without having to drill?
You didn’t mention the rubber grommets which protect the fuel line at several feed thru holes like the on engine fire wall for instance. Important to prevent fuel line shafing.
18:15 Could I send my solex 30 pict 2 top to you to get this done? I don't have much experience to perform this job.
I have been running plastic ones for 40 years. I have never had one get brittle ever. if your leaving it in there that long your not properly servicing your engine. I have had the metal ones. create VAPOR LOCK. you cannot see the fuel boiling inside a metal one. the plastic ones you can. That is why I run one right where Ii do. Never in 40 years ever seen a engine fire from that. Every shop I worked at never seen. If you put the fuel filter down there you cant see the fuel system problems plus I have had the metal fuel line in the engine compartment come apart from the inside and put a piece of dirt in my carb and make my engine not run.
"summer fuel" in warm states like Arizona have higher Ethanol content
use alcohol to lubricate when metalworking aluminum
Thank you!!!
That is my wrost fear in Lucy it's not getting into an accident it's having an engine fire
How can I send you a new drill? I mean it.
