Getting a Mate 8 this week. Some of my main reasons for it: - I'd rather have a bigger screen with same body size than an AMOLED display that I don't really care much for tbh. Gains also in terms of battery life. It's better for note taking, watching movies and videos and generally having a less crammed display. You lose out in saturation, but hey you can't have everything. - The Kirin 950. In all of the benchmark tests, it humiliated all of the other CPUs, including the SD810 and the Exynos 7420 (except for GPU, which is not as good as the other two, but that is still very good for daily life of 95% of the users). - Insane battery life. I would like to see the 6P achieve 8 hours of SOT with intensive use like the Mate 8. 8 hours of SOT is 4 days usage for me. Recharging your phone every night gets taxing after a while, and what if you don't have power available sometime (like when camping, for example). - Mate 8 is more beautiful than the 6P no doubt about it. Especially that black line at the back of the 6P, that is simply fugly. - There is an SD card slot. Some may not care for it, but anyone who uses the phone to watch movies or listen to music while travelling + is interested in having job files on it, knows that the offered internal storage is simply not enough. True, EMUI may not be as clean as stock Android, but you eventually get used to it. Not a dealbreaker by any means for 95% of the users, at least for sure not for me.

Huawei is a fast goring company, and as a communication Engineer in a Mobile networks company I see Huawie's performance from engineering prospective is much better than those old experienced companies like NSN and Motorola. I am owning now Huawie Mate 8 after a 7 years as an iPhone user. I am surprised with the performance which is flawless, the battery life which is gigantic, the screen resolution is not the highest in the market but surprisingly can satisfy your needs adding that this full HD limitation which gives the phone this enormous battery life. the OS (EMUI) is so similar to the "IOS" with all android feature, it is like a mix of "IOS" performance and stability and "android" customization and features. Finally Huawei is one of the best competing phones in the market
The mate 8 is the most powerfull, fastest, and scores higher than any other android on the planet right now on benchmarks, why didnt he say anything about its performance? he was so biased towards the nexus
I got my first nexus device with the 6P and I'm loving it. Not only is it infinitely customizable because it's stock android, but you also get the updates from Google right away and a massive developer community if you like trying out different ROMs. Not to mention the fact that unlocking the 6P is something a 3 year-old could accomplish with ease and root isn't much more complex than that. The 6P is also stupidly-fast. Everything I want it to do is instantaneous. When I pick up my tablet, I always wonder why it's not as fast as my phone, especially considering how much more hardware they could fit in a tablet. I wish someone would take everything that's in the 6P and stick it in a tablet, with a bit more RAM and a larger screen and put that on the market, because THAT'S what I want.
Great comparison! although the photo part umm..the Mate 8 HDR has better highlight retention compared to the 6p @7:46 look at the paintings, which one looks more blown out? and which one has more details in the shadows? The 6P has more contrast, but that's the issue, more contrast on a physical screen is great, but with a photo while crushing blacks and blowing out highlights isn't that great. The 6P has great low light HDR yeah but in manual mode..who knows? The Mate 8 produces a flatter color profile, better for the editors out there, unsure if it shoots raw. I suggest doing manual tests, not depending totally on HDR for setting that does everything, focusing on camera hardware itself and not just the "specs" that represent an image which has been tweaked post capture in software. Hows the OIS? and I'm not just talking about video, OIS in photos. Shoot 1/4th iso 800, f/* and compare results that way in addition to the "I can't be bothered fiddling around, let me just set it to HDR" mode. I just feel that many of these reviewers rely solely on HDR for everything, but there's no room out there for manual shooters who really want to capture just a certain range of tones. Who needs 15 stops of Dynamic range when you really just want to capture the shadows and "mood"? Hey other than that, really love the comparison, if it wasn't for the $150 premium over the 6P, I'd go the Mate8 in a heartb8at. I don't mind the skin, it's fast as heck, has an micro sd, large *ss battery with just enough pixels. Kinda lacking in the GPU department but the 950 totally blows away Samsung's and Qualcomm's top end cpu proc available "now".
Imagine , Mate 8 with 6 inch QHD Samoled display , 4000 mah battery and 12 mpx camera with OiS and of course , stalk android experience... Dream phone indeed. (with micro SD card slot and front facing speakers !)

No matter which one I use the sound in the Huawei is thin sounding in comparison to my HTC. I never get distortion. There is no HTC Boomsound with Dolby on bluetooth but for some reason, I cannot explain: the Bluetooth on my HTC also sounds better. This goes for every phone I have encountered. HTC nailed that one. I would say that my Huawei sounds better with the Sennheiser earbuds compared to the others because it has a base enhancement. My earphones are both studio monitors, so garbage goes in and garbage comes out. They have a very true sound reproduction. I never use my Jaybirds with my Huawei Nexus because that combination is awful. I do not know why. Although, I have to admit I am biased because I have two HTC phones and both deliver superb (for a cellphone) sound. But if you have a non-HTC phone, I would probably say get headphones that Jimmy-up the sound. Use your studio monitors at home.

Why? The Mate 8 is a great device, but 6P is superior in many ways. The 6P has a better screen, speakers, and camera. Also let's not forget you have a future proof device with updates for up to three years along with USB type-C.

And I am worried about the rawness of the 6P as well as the overcustomized UI for Huawei devices. I feel like I will have troubles to adapt to both UIs...

Wow what a coincidence my dad had the mate 8 and my mon the 6p, owned both cuz of hand me down (the 6p from may 2018-feb 2019) and the mate 8 (nov 2020- present) the 6p battery life was horrible(so bad the even 100% lasted 30 seconds)(the battery died 6 months after I gave it to my sister) but still great and im grateful that I owned it
12 mins review without any side-by-side video comparison? C'mon Josh. For me, two great things about Mate 8 are only: Battery & OIS. The rest, 6P is a better bet. Even their own P8 Max is way much better, which in my opinion, more luxurious in terms of built quality. Why Huawei? Why you downgrade your quality from the elegant P8 Max into something like this?
I just don't get why people complain about the UI and insist to rather see stock android...let me just say this: stock android is boring and dull but if you like it, then just get the 6p instead...period! Huawei wants to put their own UI to deferential their own product line in comparison with other manufacturers. Let us be honest here the UI is inspired by the most popular and most sold and people loved..iOS which is great for its simplicity and elegance. it would not make any sense if they put stock android because then it would be same dull experience (Stock Android)
I don't care the Mate 8 is the more powerful device, the difference is so hard to notice in day to day use, that it doesn't even matter. Sure the Mate 8 crushes every Android device in the benchmarks, but that's all they are, benchmarks. I think the 6P is the superior phone, probably because I'm more of a photographer myself, rather then an intense mobile gamer.
The Mate 8 is a great device, but from what I see it just doesn't stack up against the Nexus 6P. The Nexus 6P in my opinion is is pound for pound the best Android device from 2015 to 2016.
Steven N. Despite my preferences I have no problem admitting if a device is superior to my personal taste. Just as I feel that the Honor 5X is a better device than the Nexus 5X.
The only downside on the mate 8 is that software... waaa it is fugly they should've put stock Android there instead...

just received my mate 8 after selling my 6p. The display is no amoled but it's the next best thing. Super sharp screen.

Huawei makes great stuff. My Nexus P is probably the best phone I have ever had. Although the sound quality is not as good as HTC Dolby boomsound.

Let us be honest here the UI is inspired by the most popular and most sold and people loved..iOS which is great for its simplicity and elegance. it would not make any sense if they put stock android because then it would be same dull experience (Stock Android)
Every time, and I do mean EVERYTIME I decide to buy a phone they screw up the software or one thing I wanted. Yet again.
same here dude.. even if i have two options, both options have something i wanted unavailable.
One is stock android, one is not. One gets updates asap, one doesn't. Pretty much all I need to know.

I don't care the Mate 8 is the more powerful device, the difference is so hard to notice in day to day use, that it doesn't even matter. Sure the Mate 8 crushes every Android device in the benchmarks, but that's all they are, benchmarks.
I think the 6P is the superior phone, probably because I'm more of a photographer myself, rather then an intense mobile gamer.
In Hong Kong, Mate 8 is much more cheaper than Nexus 6P 32GB - even the 64GB version of Mate 8

6P is more equilibrated phone, from speaker, better camera and screen, besides Android native.

The Mate 8 is a great device, but from what I see it just doesn't stack up against the Nexus 6P. The Nexus 6P in my opinion is is pound for pound the best Android device from 2015 to 2016.

Steven N. Despite my preferences I have no problem admitting if a device is superior to my personal taste. Just as I feel that the Honor 5X is a better device than the Nexus 5X.
