My firm asked us all not to affiliate ourselves with them on social media (understandably). But there are a ton of places online where people discuss all of the firms reputations (TLS, Reddit etc)!

You weren't lucky assuming your focus was patent lit. With a software eng background Biglaw patent lit is very achievable. If your focus is something else then ya, especially 1L it is very luck dependent.
I explicitly said I wasn’t interested in patent lit and did no IP this summer! My program was a generalist one
@@GabrielleNoelle2 then you're at somewhere very good tho it wouldn't have been best for patent stuff if that had been what you wanted. I wouldn't knock it completely though. A lot of our summers had the same impression as you going in and did a complete 180 after trying patent lit. Some of the cases/work is pretty cool. Especially tech side

The market rate for first year associates now is $215,000.

@@pikusarker1359 The $215,000 for first year associates is pre-tax. You can also get a $20,000 bonus at the end of the year so potentially a total of $235,000 pre-tax. After tax, that's maybe $11,000 per month (depending on what state you live in).

Why do summers create channels as if their experience matters?
The world has too many lawyers….you Should have went for something STEM.. They are dying for programmers and IT people right now. To the point where they are knocking on peoples doors with 250k.
I actually worked at a reputable/well-known software company and was paid less than what I'll be paid as a lawyer. I also hated it :) True, there are many lawyers, but I'm going into NY BigLaw which is different. I speak about the salary scale in my video on what I spend in a month.
I have a Physics degree and two graduate EE and CS degrees from a top eng school... and still ended up in law. The STEM background can be very relevant and there are not nearly enough attorneys with it. On a side note there is no supply shortage in EECS.... I have friends with PhDs that make 1/2 what I do or can't find a comparable job to mine. You do realize most tech companies were laying people off recently too right?
I'm so tired of this stereotype; STEM is totally over glorified. It's the equivalent of telling a doctor they'd be better off as programmer making more money because of all time they spent in school. You can't really tell that to someone who is pursuing something they love. The grass is always greener and this idea that you'd be so much better off with x degree sounds kind of silly to someone with a job waiting for them in a field they truly care about. There is a shortage of lawyers who are truly passionate about what they do. Also, there is an ageism problem that exists in many stem fields doesn't with law. If anything, experienced lawyers are sought after.
@@jarkjarkerson1991 I agree, you don't really see people talking about the downsides of tech and why people tend to change jobs in the industry every 2-3 years. Every industry has it's pros and cons, the pros of the tech industry are just way more visible.
Lmao first year big law associates make more than that with opportunities for salary increases every year. Not everyone wants to do stem
