    Nice update! Finding a 6900XT that fits is very challenging ... there are basically none available except for used. I looked for almost 4 months (here in Canada) and ended up buying a lightly used one locally (non mining) at a decent price a few weeks ago. While I hope that Apple eventually adds a driver for the newer cards, I wouldn’t hold my breath as I think that, even though apple continues to sell the MP7,1 it appears to have stopped support, IMHO. Thanks for posting this video.

      @@lunarmagicexpress7231 Depends on if you want to mess with OpenCore or not. Since the 6950 XT is just an overclock of the 6900 XT, they draw more power thus are hotter and louder. My personal opinion is I'd just nab a 6900 XT as you're looking at a 3-4% gains across the board.

    In your opinion, does it make sense to upgrade from R6800XT to R6900XT? Of course, I'm writing about the Mac Pro here. I work in Davinci Resolve on a daily basis and do editing and color correction.
    One more thing, because I see that I found a specialist in this field :)
    I have the R6800XT plugged into PCIe #4, I also have a stock 580x plugged in.
    Will I feel the difference when I plug the 6800xt into port number 3?

      Depends on the OS you run. If you’re running 10.15 the 5700 Xt is solid. The dual heigh 6800s (not the xt) are big step up as they have a fair amount of compute. However, an m1 and especially an m2 Mac will run circles around the cMP as Resolve is one of the most optimized Apple silicon apps, and makes good use of the media engine found on the m2.

      @dmug  Рік тому

      @@h.b.5577 I don't know about your needs, but I was fine with the card blocking slots. It's frustrating that it does that but also, the sort of trade that's required for said card.
      I think its a perspective alignment: If you wanted Apple's top MPX modules (The w6900x and w6800x duo) you'd pay A LOT more money to lose access to 4 PCIe slots. An aftermarket card gives you access to one more PCIe slot, saves you $5000+, and delivers faster performance than Apple's solutions.
      There's always going the path of aftermarket coolers but these days they tend to focus on maximum cooler and thus unlikely to be lower profile. I haven't swapped a cooler since the 8600 GT Ultra nor do I keep up with it as I'm not much of a gamer.

  • @popstudioguitar
    @popstudioguitar Рік тому +1

    Another MPX feature...no fan.... I'm curious if you notice any difference between using MPX versus standard PCIe cards ? For sound editors, like me, it's an issue trying to keep fan noise almost to none - which the MP7.1 is good at - with the basic MPX module.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  Рік тому +1

      If I’m not mistaken, the only fanless mpx is the 580. I do a fair amount of sound work as a hobby and my 6900 XT isn’t audible, at least my quasi treated room when using audio apps. Video editing will cause it to hum a bit but not much. You can also flash the GPUs with lower clocked roms. It’s a shame though you can’t maintain the fan curves like windows where you can bounce between profiles and undervolt and reduce targets to keep the gpu pretty silent.
      I’m just in my converted office garage, which I’ve hung some sound dampening in which can be seen in some my videos in the background. It’s a dual layer acoustic treatment, and I’m recording with tolerant mice like the SM7b, sennehiser e935e and rode go lavier mic (common thread: dynamic) and the much bigger issue is still room dynamics and not the noise floor.
      Also the loudest component is my 4x terramaster storage bay as the hdds are generally the only audible component in my setup.

    In the video, you use the power connections 1-2 and 3-4 (with 3 cables) for a single graphics card ... Do you get 450W of additional power to the PCI slot? I thought you could only use the power connection for the slots printed on each case and thus only get a maximum of 300W additional power.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  Рік тому

      Nah, you can route power any way you see fit. The 6900 XT can draw a stupid amount of power, but not all of the 6900 XTs have triple power cables, many only have two. I didn't actually realize it when I bought mine but it is an OC version that performs pretty similar to the 6950 XT, hence why it kicks out better metal compute scores than the w6900X. I was only concerned with "will it fit". I bought it back when 6900 XTs finally hit $800 right after the GPU market was returning to normal so selection was pretty thin. For whatever reason it was cheaper than other 6900 XTs by $100+.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  Рік тому

      The performance of the shared bus really will depend on how much activity is going over the (formerly) Northbridge controller. Most of the time users aren't hammering all the PCIe lanes at once enough for it to be noticeable, however with technologies like DirectStorage you'd probably be prone to observing the performance impact (loading a game might take a few extra seconds) if say your GPU and SSD were both on non Direct Storage lanes.
      As far as 6800 vs 6900 XTs, I certainly wouldn't say the w6900x is worth as you could buy a M1 Ultra Mac Studio + a 6900 XT and still have money left over. 6900 XTs probably will be as low as they'll be as fabs have switched to the 7000 series. The 6900 is roughly 50% faster than the 6800. That could be worth it if you can afford it or not.
