    The Marrow Engine is based off of Unity, it isn’t built from the ground up. Also, no game engine *needs* a mod kit, although UE has some objects that most game developers use which makes it a little easier to guess how to mod it, so it won’t really be any easier to mod than any other game engine by itself.

    I'm a VR dev and have been for 5 years now. The real issue imo is just the hassle of VR and lack of true heart in recent games. All the actually experienced devs are stuck making medical training or military sims so game quality is suffering for sure; I think a bigger symptom is not many actually innovative, creative, or FUN games are coming out.
    A game has to be good in foundation and bring something new to the table regardless of VR or not, and a lot of modern games are kind of hollow feeling regardless of VR or not. A VR game has to be even more engaging and truly fun because VR is just a lot of work. At the end of the day you need to motivate your players to come back WAY more than a flatscreen game because instead of reaching over to grab a controller while chilling on the couch most people have to set things up, even for standalone. Move the coffee table, get both controllers, and the headset, "Are they all charged?", "can I even stand or jump around after that workout yesterday?".
    Even though I spend like 70 hours a week doing VR game dev (half on my own projects, half to keep me from going homeless), I still think for a game to have true success it needs to have a fantastic flatscreen and VR mode. I have yet to see any traditional style "game" (not VRchat) truly succeed in the VR market when it comes to a large, lasting community and I think it's because you need VR/flatscreen cross platform to truly last and go big. Imo this has also yet to be done. No publishers or studios are brave or bold enough to put 100% effort into both flatscreen and VR modes so one is always an afterthought. I personally don't think VR is "there" yet to truly make a game BIG. I love small games that are not meant to be big or make tons of money, don't get me wrong, but the industry is trying to make these expensive heavy hitter VR only games and then when they don't sell great the publisher cuts the studio and cancels VR entirely. These uninspired money grabs and cheap add-ons from inexperienced devs are kind of ruining the industry imo.
    I guess my tl:dr is if someone wants to make a truly successful VR game, it needs to have a flatscreen mode that is just as good as VR (and vice versa), and don't even try to do VR if no one on your team is capable of doing it well. Hitman VR still makes me mad when I think about how truly awful the implementation is....

    I remember watching the first trailer for Bonelab and being astonished at the new features shown, and when I bought the game, I played through the story modded and haven’t really touched the game since, I hope the Vr community gets the great big breath of fresh air it needs from this news.

      I didn't even finish the game because of it's constant ambiguity and lack of the next step where I got tired of trying to figure it out and stopping to check my phone. Terrible structure and I was very disappointed when they wouldn't give me a refund when I spent most of the first 2 hours confused and frustrated. I know I'm only one of very few but, even now I can't even get mods to work so I feel cheated out of a praised game because it never made me happy.

    Because you specifically asked I have thought about this a lot... (I made the Western Town mod for BoneLab.) If BoneLab has taught me anything it's to not count your chickens before they hatch. And the devil is always in the details.
    Hypothetically what VRAF is claiming they will offer could be really powerful and slick. But it sounds most attractive right now because we basically don't have any of the details yet. Until the release it's all just dreams and promises. Great video!

    As a prospective VR developer (Think the reload scene from PATLABOR but made systemic so you'll be able to build the mech design, cockpit layout, control scheme, keyframe inputs, etc.) I'm definitely much more likely to use a plug-in than a whole new engine. Stress Level Zero really burned a lot of PR by putting out a game solely intended to be modded without full mod support instead of simply releasing a more content rich sequel without the feature updates and putting out the mod tool project/new engine as it's ready.

    Here is the thing with Bonelab..
    IT IS GMOD BUT IN VR!
    but just like gmod, stuff can get boring if you dont have any mods.. bonelab was developed as a 30/30/30 type game,
    (30% campaign/ 30% physics/ 30% sandbox)
    Also, gmod has inbuilt multiplayer, adding stuff like gmod rp servers all of that, you have to get a code mod for bonelab, which is called fusion, on PC? its really eazy to mod, but on quest? which is like 50% of the people that play bonelab? its terrifyingly difficult.
    So, TLDR; (Bonelab is THE gmod in vr, But it gets boring after awhile..no matter what.)
    *will edit if i have anymore ideas :)*

    VR games I feel like are only gimmicks and games are not MADE for VR. Just ports or "reimagine" aspects of older games which I don't mind, but it doesn't bring in that big shock and awe to say "Oh, we should get a VR for THIS GAME specifically." It doesn't have enough appeal because players will go "Oh, well I can get this experience, but on PC. So what's the point?"
    Games like BoneLab and BoneWorks are great because they are made FOR VR and nothing else. Other games are coming out and they are adding in features you could only do in VR, but sometimes it feels like lots of games right now are just simulations of physics and graphics in VR. But there are exceptions like Half-Life: Alyx, where they are putting in 40+ hours in a SinglePlayer game that has modding capabilities and the game is MEANT for VR only.
    But the baseline for me personally is Half-Life: Alyx and until a game can blow me away the same way that game did, lots of others are "all bark, no bite."
    Note: Ghost of Tabor shouldn't have won VR of the year in 2023. It's a early access title that only won because of the trend of Extraction Shooters being more common now. Same thing would have happened if VR was in this state, but during the Battle Royal trend.

      Quest 3 doesn't have any sort of eye-tracking features, but that system should work with any headset that has eye-tracking. Right now that's PSVR 2, Meta Quest Pro, Apple Vision Pro, and a few obscure PC VR headests (HTC Vive Pro Eye?). It should become more common in the future though.

    • @christianmccauley7340
      @christianmccauley7340 7 місяців тому +1

      No. We don’t. I know PCVR is awesome, but the reality is it’s incredibly alienating to most audiences. The reality is most people don’t have a PC powerful enough to play VR, and most don’t have the money for a PC or a PCVR headset.
      Standalone, like it or not, is the future. We need more deep _VR_ games. As in, for all of VR.

    • @126theman
      @126theman 7 місяців тому +3

      @@christianmccauley7340 you ain’t wrong,I just got a powerful enough pc recently.
      Stand-alone is definitely the future, it’s just disappointing in its current state for me. I’m a big vr-enjoyer but I feel that the whole point of vr (deep immersion) is greatly undermined by these games having shitty graphics/cartoonish styles. So vr needs more deep standalone games, but I really need more deep pcvr games.
      I think I’ll really enjoy stand-alone in a few generations when it starts to look really good. Know what I mean?

      @@christianmccauley7340 Definition of an L take. Flagship experiences are essential in driving a medium forward. All these watered-down standalone games are doing more harm than good for mass VR retention.

  • @GreyMatterShades
    @GreyMatterShades 7 місяців тому +1

    I agree this is very exciting. I've been saying for a while now that VR developers need to start sharing/licensing their gameplay systems if VR is ever going to advance. It makes no sense to my why a new VR developer would (for example) build their own melee combat system. So many have tried, and most have wound up with sub-par results, so why not try to license the code from one of the handful of developers who's done it successfully already. Developers could save years, and spend that time iterating/improving on the code they got, as well as building more content and improving the level of polish in the game.
    One thing I'd caution before you get too hyped for it, is that it's possible that some of what you see Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate wouldn't be included with VRAF. I'm sure Mighty Eyes is using the VRAF system to build Wanderer, but stuff like pouring the liquid out of the bottle might be considered content for that game, not systems to include in VRAF. So developers might still have to implement that stuff themselves.
    Oh and building a quest system is generally pretty easy as I understand it. The reason they don't get used in most VR games is because the developers don't have the resources to make that sort of open-world/non-linear type of game that would need such a system. It's not a matter of the challenges with building a quest system (multiple objectives, journal to track them, etc.), but rather that they would then have to build all the quests themselves, and structure your game to take advantage of them. That's where the challenge lies. Also making quests completable in different ways can make a quest system more complex, but that's still more about the quests themselves.

    I think the real problem here is just that as supportive of modders as these games are Skyrim VR is still better than all of them simply because it's an actual long game. Bonelabs comes so close but the real kicker is simply that maps are mods only and there isn't anyway to go view a map on a whim or maybe start making a map in game. They basically have no community which is something VR chat had before they let it rot.
    Many times I'll be playing a game even on a flat screen and I'll have this strange loneliness feeling like there should be something but it isn't there. This is basically just my mind telling me I'm alone it's also why phill Spencer says VR is lonely and ready player one looks so freaking cool! It's a showing of connections between people like things are happening and the world is turning. This is also probably why you are having so many problems with NPCS looking fake.
    Picture this you put your headset on and spawn in your home in your avatar and the first thing that catches your eye is a big ol screen showing multiple vr rooms with tons of people interacting and a lively chat room different things are happening on the screens! VR sports, VR talk shows, and VR tutorials all kinds of stuff that looks neat outside of your house you see a big city called the hub and while you don't have to go there if you do you see tons of players just going about their business...
    Get it yet? VR feels stagnant because the community is separated and not connected unless via a few games. It's why meta is pushing meta worlds so much but it's failing because they aren't forcing it on you and it's a separate instance with a niche design.

    It works with a blade and sorcery mod where you and other enemies will have a point your attacked at tracked and blood will dynamically spill down from that point till it reaches a curve or drop off and then it will drip and splat on the floor or even on your hand if you hold it under the drip point
    Something like this but maybe for like pouring water on things, bleeding etc. Would be really cool to see in this engine and i would hope that its possible without tanking performance but i wouldnt be surprised if its not possible with the resources vr has as of right now

    while there is nothing wrong with getting excited, lets temper that excitement
    this is a plugin for Unreal, Unreal is a great engine, but its heavy, its harder to run then unity, this is why unity has such a strong footing in VR, the quest 2 and 3 are the VR market, not supporting those without having the backing of a company like Sony means just happily losing out on most of your sales, Unreal can run on quest, its not incompatible, but you will need to do more optimization to get it running smoothly, this could counteract any time savings VRAF saves you
    I'm all for this don't get me wrong, unity as a company has shown that they are not trustworthy, ever since they announced their pricing changes last year and turned literally the entire gaming industry against them, it has had me worried of VR just dying because unity kills itself, and with how much of a reliance on unity VR has I could see a massive amount of devs giving up on VR, but this all relies on unreal being light enough to run on quest, and Epic Games doesn't seem to be all that interested in making unreal lighter weight, everything Epic has been adding makes Unreal heavier and heavier
    so I'd keep excitement in check, this could end up a nothing burger due to using unreal, not many games on quest use unreal so I can't say how well or poorly it runs, just that it does run worse then unity which could be enough to keep some devs away

    I think this is a bad idea the whole problem with the games industry right now is that all the games look the same because they're all on the unreal engine the last thing we need is all VR games looking the same

    • @GreyMatterShades
      @GreyMatterShades 7 місяців тому +1

      I don't think the VR tools offered would change the way a game looks. It's more about handling the basic VR stuff, like making objects easy to pick up, making physics work properly, handling the way your body moves when you turn your head or move your controllers, etc. Taking care of the basic stuff means developers would have more time and resources to dedicate to more important stuff (like refining their gameplay systems or making more content).

    I feel that you don’t understand what bonelab is trying to do, and comparing it to a game like Wanderer is not right. Bonelab is trying to make a fully physics based world and body, no bullshit animations or anything. All physics from the way you move to the way NPC’s walk with full physics. Wanderer looks great on paper, but I think you fail to recognize that it’s highly faked and helped with systems that defeat the complete physics based world. Wanderer is trying to make a smooth feeling VR game, but that comes at the cost of loosing fully physical interactions. Bonelab on the other hand uses physics where ever it can, whether it be the NPC’s, melee combat, or guns which literally fires a projectile with a trigger volume at a high velocity. Bonelab is trying to push VR by making everything you see physics based, and make it feel good, while on the other hand Wanderer is trying to greate a polished VR game that feels good to play, but in reality isn’t that groundbreaking as it’s just using polished mechanics that have been seen 100’s of other times in other VR games. Also why do you say PhysX?? It’s not special, it’s the default unity physics engine and is not very interesting. Also also, please stop using the exact same footage across a 23 minute video. It’s highly repetitive and makes people want to quit watching.

      Last comment, I’d like to add, Wanderer is a narrative game with no sandbox or room for creative building and play, making the replay value next to none.

      hi, yeah i agree with the gameplay loop being a bit Repetitive, as far as How I say physics i cant help you there, There's a lot of moving parts and things to juggle when creating a video by my self and something is bound to slip out less then perfect, so if that to much for you might not like future videos because I'm not perfect, but i do the best i can. and as far as what you said about bonelab goal of making an full Physics based engine, all i have to say is that was not my point, my core point is that after hearing Stress level zero's reason for not updating bonelab it seamed very similar to what this company is also trying to do with VRAF, im not saying that this is just like bonelab but simply seeing the parallel of both companies approach to the question at large. thank you for your time.
