For us Sony Xperia fans we love the fact that the shots are natural. But that is also why the phones aren't popular - because the average user wants wow photos to show off. All the tech reviewers also only just test auto mode and compare them and when the others are using heavy computational photography the photos may seem nicer. I still like the auto mode on Sony, personally, but I think a good solution might be if they do more computational stuff on auto mode to satisfy average user, but then make sure all models (including 10) have full manual mode with the regular auto + controls. Also, no delay between product announcement and product sales. And sell the phones in more markets. I live in Cyprus, an EU country, but it is an island so things are harder to get. Only 1 shop sells Sony phones and I don't think he is even official. I think he buys from the UK and imports to Cyprus, so the phones are even more expensive here. None of the big cellphone networks sells Sony here, which is a huge problem. Plus, zero accessories. I had to order some cases from Aliexpress and wait a few months to get them....
I’ve always had Sony’s, now I have a 1 v, I can honestly say...the device is amazing, I’ve had it for a few months now, I use it 24/7 I am more than satisfied, I love it, it’s not like a typical phone, can do so much on it
Sony certainly has good hardware and especially good battery life. (where Samsung is skimping and Xperia 5 V has fair 25% bigger battery than Galaxy S23) But what Sony should improve is software support duration, which is just short for high end product.

Typing this from an 4 -5 year old Sony Xperia SOV42 Model. Sony challenges the pro in you. Not just any phone holder thinking he/she a photographer. And Guess what, sadly as you said "Its more authentic to capture moments they way you saw them, not the best way they should be processed" is not an sub-average person with logo wants. Appreciate your work and words. I'm Happy with Sony in South Asia where it isn't launched. Hope Sony watches the Market closely and Step-In.
You have a good point with the naming. As someone who only looks into the market whenever I need a new phone (which is 5 years apart at best), the naming was very confusing. It's counter intuitive with the roman numerals, especially when they had the "Xperia Z" before and now it's V and you don't understand why 😂 Even the employees at the electronics market had to ask me several times before they understood which phone I was asking for! And then, not a single physical market had one in stock. I am looking forward to this phone because it checks all my expectations, but with how unpopular they are right now, I feel like the next time I'm looking for a new phone, there might not be a new one anymore. I think Sony needs to do better marketing for once (I never see ads for their phones anywhere) but they should also have a more accessible camera app! I don't have it yet but from what I saw, the apps are pretty professional but thus confusing. Most people don't use their cameras like that, they just want to take quick photos and have them look vibrant and sharp. It wouldn't be hard to solve this issue by just changing the software. I think they should do ONE camera app with a simplistic interface and few options upfront, and then simply add like a switch to enable "pro mode" or something. Honestly I almost didn't buy the phone either because so many people mentioned how confusing the camera apps were.
I've got my Xperia 5 V about a month ago and it's really just "my phone", no need for another one. My wife got herself a Samsung S23 Ultra and during night shoots it was exactly as I've heard it once: Sony takes pictures the way you see them, Samsung the way you remember them. I wish the auto mode had a Samsung switch though, sometimes such a feature could come in handy, without the need for optimizing after the shot that tries to make you pay a monthly fee for Google 1. That subscription theme is not as bad as all the bloatware on Samsung devices but it left a bad taste in my mouth.
I am a fan of sony smart phones and i used them for very long time but i would also like to mention the things on which Sony really needs to work on -OS UI (they have good apps but os need improvements they need to learn from Xiaomi) - software updates (sony should give little os updates for long time) so everyone enjoy and crave for sony full new os upgrades in their newly released phones.
I'm convinced. I'm going for it. I was deciding between: Samsung A55, Samsung S23, a Zenphone, Google Pixel 8a and this one. I bought an Huawei Mate 10 Pro for € 900 six and a half years ago. And for usual phone stuff, Whatsapp, Instagram, UA-cam, my Huawei still does the trick. But I've had to repair the USB-C port two times. So I want a new phone with the option of wireless charging. I own a Sony FX6 and Sony A7c, so I don't need it to replace professional photography or video. I just want: - Wireless charing - Good battery life - Storage space of more than 128 GB (128+SD will work). - Something that will hopefully last another 6 years. - Not a too bulky phone. I want to be able to use it with one hand, without a big button on the back. Pixel 8a seems to heat and battery life is not that great. Also it seems to have trouble with fingerprint unlocking. This one looks like a durable decent phone. I'm going for it.
Sony has a short amount of support (2 years?) - That's a big reason people don't go with their phones : / - But then again i'm still using my OnePlus from over 6 years ago, and it's BEEN out of software updates. There's nothing I feel I'm missing out on.
Some here, I'm using a Huawei Mate 10 Pro with Android 8, it did suddenly have a software update not too long ago. But I too don't feel like I'm missing anything. The update had a couple of new features, but moreover it was an annoyance that things changed. And there was suddenly AI search on the phone... I feel like with every update China is getting more personal info hahah. So yeah if everything is working I don't feel I need any more updates, unless there suddenly is a major hacking exploit exposed.
Yes and no, I shoot in 60 fps because otherwise it would take too much space in the phone. At the same time it's a shame that Sony lag behind specially since they introduced the whole high frame topic to smart phones :)
5V record video in 4K120fps with Hybrid Log Gamma (superb HDR) and it is only device on the market I know, that can do this. Bitrate ~150mbps. It is camera not toy like other brands. 480fps is typicaly usless because sensor noise damage quality. Even Pixel8Pro can max 4K30p with HLG. iPhone 15Pro? 1080@120fps.
@@lucasn82_ Wow, didn't know that. How is it that 1 V can't do this? I don't find it useless. On 1+9 slow motion options up to 480 fps are perfectly usable with mcpro24fps. Xperia 1 does the best 960fps among mobile phones, (without interpolation) I don't see any sensor noise or damage what you are talking about.
Sony phones actually do sell. The problem is most they only sell in specific markets and their strange treatment of the US. Which probably do the American tech reviewers less into reviewing Sony. But Sony do actually earn money sun on their phone. The sad thing is that Sony chose to be a nisch company and go their own way. They aren't interested in growing their sales.
Actually there's nothing in optics causing "zoom compression", if you mean perspective. What causes different perspective in photos taken with different focal length lenses is difference in distance: Wider lens photos are taken from closer range. If you took wider image from same distance and cropped it, perspective would be same as with longer focal length lens. But that cropping just runs out of pixels fast in simulating longer focal length and even short tele offers fast more detailed image. And the ironic thing is that for static scenes (landscapes, sunsets) automated panorama modes could easily replace that ultra wide camera. Beyond those situations there's really little use for ultra wide, because of perspective looking so weird in other uses... Wile that short tele camera (included in predecessor Xperia 5 IV and competing Galaxy S23) would be widely usable for portraits and compact subject photos.
My biggest issue is the software support.the price they are asking for their phones they atlist shd give 4 years of software update and 5 years of security updates..
I think they are bad just not with the marketing, in my opinion they should change a bit the target of this phone... Then you have the Xperia 5 as a mid but premium phone, keeping most of the features but with SD 7. Still powerfull enough but you can reduce the price so it will be in the 600-650 GBP range in its release. At least you are not compiting with the S23/S24 because no-one is choose this one over the Samsungs.
