    Hi! Lori again from Maker High. Hello
    to all my fellow Makers.
    Today we're going to talk about how to use a glue gun.
    So, the first thing you're going to do is to protect your work surface.
    If you have a silicone mat, that is fantastic. Totally use that.
    But if not, you don't have to invest in anything that fancy.
    If you have some newspaper or some
    parchment paper
    or some tinfoil, even a piece of
    cardboard ... anything is fine
    so long as the nozzle from the glue gun isn't resting on it
    You want it to catch drips
    you don't want it to catch fire. FIRE BAD!
    If this is your first time using a brand new glue gun, you are going to want to
    insert a glue stick before you plug it in
    Now, some glue guns have a little
    switch here on the side that you gonna
    turn on and off.
    most of them don't so if yours doesn't have one
    do not panic and if the tip
    starts smoking
    a little bit that's okay. It's to be
    expected. They have put a little bit
    of a non-corrosive chemical on the tip.
    So, you know, if it continues to smoke
    after the first minute or two then you
    might have a problem, but other than that, you should be okay.
    Now, we're gonna wait for the internal
    heating element to heat up
    For the small, mini glue guns, it's
    going to be about 2 minutes
    and for the larger glue guns, it's going to take about 5.
    GLUE GUN HEAT UP DOG INTERMISSION
    “What are you doing, Halford?”
    Don't force the trigger on your
    glue gun.
    if you wanna check and see if it's hot enough yet you can pull it very gently.
    If there is no give, wait another
    minute or two but if it seems like it's
    good to go, then you should be ready.
    You're going to hold your glue gun close to the item.
    You're going to press the trigger to advance the glue
    through the glue gun and out through the nozzle.
    And then when you have enough glue, release the trigger and pull it away.
    IF GLUING ITEMS TOGETHER, PRESS TOGETHER GENTLY
    WAIT A FEW SECONDS
    ...AND SUCCESS
    When your glue stick gets to be
    about here in a glue gun you're just going to
    want to add another one in through the
    back
    and it's going to finish feeding through
    the one that you have
    and pull the other one in. As always
    remember when you are done using a glue
    gun to turn off and unplug iteven if it's just leaving the room.
    If you haven't yet
    take a look at the top 10 things not to
    do with a glue gun.
    It's basically a safety video. and you should watch it before you use a glue gun for the first time.
    and that's basically it! You know, it takes a
    little bit of a learning curve, but it's
    really not that hard to do
    its definitely an easy form
    of gluing things together. It's pretty quick.
    It's pretty sturdy.

    My glue gun glue dries instantly. By the time I bring in the object I had to stick it's done drying and flaskes off. It's such a waste. What is wrong with my glue gun? Please help :(

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  5 років тому +3

      It could be a few things. If you are in front of a fan or air conditioning vent, it might be what's drying your glue too quickly. If you're in a cold area, it could also be that your glue sticks were exposed to extreme cold, and it damaged the wax in them. It could also be that the heating element on your glue gun isn't heating up enough.
      If it's a low temp glue gun, I'd suggest switching to a high or dual temp, and make sure you dont store your glue sticks someplace like the garage.
      Hope that helps!

      +Emily Wulff It's because you're supposed to leave the glue stick in the glue gun for next time. If you pull it out, it not only breaks the seal on the heating element, you could break the trigger on your gun.

      Elise Wong If you DO decide to buy a glue gun, let me know if you have any more questions! (I posted in another video about the minis and bases, so not sure how much that will weigh in your decision.) Just remember if you have a Michael's, Joanns or Hobby Lobby you will be buying from, they all three have apps with coupons you can use in store. Usually the coupons run 40% off one item. Sometimes they will change it up and offer a percentage off you total, or something similar. Buy anyway, always check for a coupon before you hit the checkout line!

    Thank you for these instructions. Very helpful. My question is for a canvas that I want to use glue on for tree texture and then paint...should i get a high or low heat gun and what size in thickness glue sticks? Thank you.

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  5 років тому

      Hotter glue takes longer to dry, and the size of the nozzle will determine the thickness, not the size of the gun or the glue stick. While hot glue might seem cheap, if you're going to use it often, or over a large canvas, other texture mediums might make more sense. I dont know what medium you're working in, and you may have a specific vision for the hot glue, but I hope that helps!

    i gotta problem. my glue gun i got from dollar store. i used it once. the glue dried & stuck & it wont budge after i pluged in & it was hot. the glue stick chamber was full of glue & never melted. no matter how long it was plugged in for the glue chamber never got hot & melted the old glue. it wouldnt let me feed the new stick in. i pulled too hard forced it & my trigger broke. how do you keep the glue from turning hard in the glue chamber so i can use it more than one time before it breaks?

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  Рік тому +1

      Hey there! I'm sad to tell you this, but the dollar store glue guns are pretty much made to break. The craft store version are somewhat better. Best advice I can give is to make sure you buy the right temp sticks for your glue gun, and make sure to keep it upright, even if it's just still warm. I hope that helps? I've got other videos that might be helpful.

    Hello Thank you for your message.
    I have had the glue sticks for about as long as I have had the gun itself they came with the glue gun. I can’t remember how long I have had it but I would think it must be about six months and have not used it for some time. It has got a bit clogged up with glue and I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to clean it. I think the nozzle may be clogged up but I don’t know how to unclog it. I hope this helps I have given you as much information as I can but if there is any thing else you need to know,please ask
    Thank you for your help.

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  5 років тому

      Yeah, there isn't too much you can do for that. You haven't used anything other than glue in your glue gun, correct? You might also try switching to another outlet to see if you're getting enough power. As a last resort, you can unplug it and try to use a lighter on the tip if it's metal and not silicone on the tip. It might super heat the glue to get it to come out. Be careful, if you do that. I'm assuming you're an adult. If not, get an adult to do it for you. Don't burn yourself!

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  7 років тому

      Low temp is good for more delicate things like lace and paper. High temp is better for cardboard. They do sell some that switch from one to the other, so that might be your best bet.

      The problem with metal is that it's non porous, so it's hard to attach. Plastic depends on if it PLA or ABS, because they have different melting points. What are you trying to make?

      Cheryl turtlemoon Thanks! Are you near a fan or an air conditioning vent? Air tends to make the glue "spider web" as it's being dispensed. If you're already finished with your project, and have strings everywhere, you can hit it with a hair dryer and they will ball up, to make them easier to get rid of. Hope that helps!

    Hi I enjoyed your video! I read the booklet I got with mine and first thing I saw was do not use an extension cord! You are using one. LOL Never any issues using the extension cord? Thanks. Also... I wasn't sure but I just leave the glue capsule in there when I'm finished, never take that back out right? The glue dries faster than I can place stuff sometimes, any helpful hints to that? Thank you!

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  7 років тому

      Depends on the glue gun for the extension cord. I have one that cuts off if there's a surge and such. Yes, please leave the glue in there. Try doing smaller sections if the glue is drying too fast.

    Hi!
    I want to use a hot glue gun to attach fabric bows to clips. The fabrics I'm using are polyester and cotton. Should I use a low temperature glue gun? Or just a normal one?

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  9 років тому

      Cristina Lopez - Ayala Hi! We have been without internet the last couple of days, so sorry for taking so long to reply. I am going to recommend low temp if you are going to use hot glue. Polyester is made from synthetic fibers that are basically plastic, so there's a chance it could warp the fabric if you use too high a temp. Also, if the cotton is thin, the glue can seep through and burn your fingers.
      I will point out, if you are attaching them to metal (non fabric covered clips) any type of glue gun glue will have a tendency to pop off after repeated use. (The metal is so smooth, it's hard for the glue to have long term adhesion.) You might want to consider a small fabric backing and sandwich the clip in-between the bow and fabric, so if it does pop off of the metal, it won't fall off, since the fabric pieces should remained glued to each other. Or, you could take an emery board and rough up the clip slightly, which should help with helping to extend the adhesion. Hope this helps!

  • @lionelchin7042

    Hi, I'm a total newbie intending to start using a glue gun from UHU glue. I'm a perfectionist and tend to prefer to make my crafts with "professionalism". This often makes me do certain things a bit slower to put things together neatly.
    Videos I've seen on youtube give me the impression that using glue guns have a much stronger hold than UHU glue. But what I wonder is how quickly(and accurately) must I work if it dries and adheres the items faster than the UHU glue I use now? Could you give me an idea? Thanks.

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  9 років тому

      Lionel Chin It really depends on what you are making, your margin of error and if you are using high temp or low temp glue. Also, if you are using the stick UHU, or the all purpose adhesive.
      Also, hot glue is not the best choice if you are using plastics that are non porous or have no surface texture. It tends to pop off over wear, depending on weather and other factors. I tried taking a look at your channel to see if you had any projects to give more targeted advice, but I don't see any. Can you tell me the kinds of materials you are using and the general purpose of the items you are making? Thanks!

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  9 років тому

      Lionel Chin Your boxes are adorable! So jealous!
      For the boxes on the videos (which are really cool, btw), I would suggest you stick with the UHU for the paper decorations, and use the glue gun to attach the corners of the drawers/shelves. The high temp will give you the most work time, but you also have a better chance of burning yourself. They make a fine tip glue gun in the high temp that runs about $8. Hopefully, you will be able to see it in the link below:
      That's going to be your best bet to keep from having the glue seep around the edges when you adhere it. I'd have qtips on hand to pull any run off just in case. I'd also have a bottle of matching paint in the same color for spot touch ups.
      If you haven't tried it yet, and have access to it, you may want to experiment with zip dry. It does have a faster drying time, but it works really well in humidity, and has really nice results with decorative paper. It was originally made for scrapbooking. Hope this helps!

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  6 років тому

      Sorry for taking so long to respond. Currently filming.
      So, if it's high temp, it's not your glue sticks. It's not your trigger because it's still pulling the glue through.
      If it's a smaller glue gun, it's not going to heat up as much glue at one time as a larger glue gun. You have to wait in between "pumps" more so than the larger.
      It could be your heating element. If it didn't used to do it, and now it is, it's probably dying. There's no real way to replace it if that's the case.
      If you wait when you're having a hard time pushing it through, does it come out like it does when it first heats up? Is it large or small? How long have you had it?

    • @Michal-pl3zc

    What do you do after a session of glueing? do you have to squirt excess glue?

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  9 років тому +1

      Daniel Anderson You just leave the unused stick in the glue gun. It forms a kind of seal in the assembly of the gun, so when you heat it back up, it will work just the same. If it's too far down in the gun to push out on it's own, just put another stick in the back like normal, and when it's heated, just feed it through like you normally would. :) Hope that answers your question...

    Used for the first time last night. Question, the first stick is in machine and obviously heated enough after 5 mins.but now in the middle of any project If a 2nd glue stick is needed, which is already in position-would it require another 5 mins. of pre-heating to melt, or does it automatically hit the tip and melt quickly on ts own when lever is pushed. It dres fairly quickly-and would hate to have to wait to melt additional glue stick. So can you Please answer that. Thanks.

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  8 років тому

      +Betty Wilchek The time it takes to heat up the sticks depends on the size of the heating element in the glue gun and the quality of element. You can see what I'm talking about here: ua-cam.com/video/76Aq5hLhkds/v-deo.html
      Hi temp will heat faster than low temp, so that may also play into the time it takes.
      If you are more concerned with time than accuracy, you might consider a glue pot which melts the glue into a pool and keeps it warm. I hope this answer helps!

    Hello, just bought a glue gun and when i started using it, a whole glue stick went inside the glue chamber but nothing came out even after 10mins of heating and waiting. Should i just add another glue stick to make the first one leak or is there any problem with the gun?

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  6 років тому

      Yes,, add another glue stick. It may be the first stick melted down so far that stick isn't being pushed forward. (If the trigger is slack when you go to use it, that's a pretty good sign this is your problem)
      If that doesn't solve you problem, then it's the glue gun itself. 10 minutes is more than enough time for even a large high temp to heat up. Unless it's an industrial size.

    Could I use a low temp gun for blinding glass. Or high temp.

    • @MakerHighSchool
      @MakerHighSchool  9 років тому

      Andrea Bailey I usually don't recommend using a glue gun on glass, but I know people do it anyway. :) Things to keep in mind:
      1) Make sure you glass isn't cold. There is a chance it could shatter.
      2) Thicker glass (like Mason jars) will be better with hot glue than thinner glass (like a champagne flute)
      3) Low temp, all the way
      4) Any moisture will make whatever you have glued pop right off
      5) If you are gluing glass to glass, you should not use hot glue at all, since it will not hold. You are better off using a UV cured adhesive glue, or at the very least, something specifically made for glass to glass adhesion. For example, this glass glue from Loctite: amzn.to/1U8fvC8 (Hopefully, the link will come up for you)
      I hope this answers your question! If not, let me know. :)
